Decent night that. Paddy Kenny weirdly diving out of the way of David Johnson's opener. Andy Reid volleying them into a 2-0 lead from a quickly-taken free kick. Us kicking off, winning a free kick ourselves immediately and then Brown scoring. Kabba's volley off a Paddy long kick. Pesch's "oh my god" moment - also off a Paddy kick. Des Walker putting the cherry on the cake although they still had time to make it 4-3 on the night.

I feel like loads of Championship playoff games used to be like this - they're pretty cagey now. I know it's "the biggest prize ever" at stake but it was back in 2000-2003 as well.

I'll never forgive warnock for not picking mccall in that final and picking mark fucking rankine.

Didn't he leave windass behind too?

Criminal.

You need your big game players in big games.
If memory serves, Macca had been injured and Rankine (shh, don't mention him now ) had done a pretty decent job against Forest in the semi's. Windyass was subbed at half-time for Kabba so no surprise why Kabba started ahead of him in the final but I can't remember why he wasn't even in the squad.

Didn’t forest nearly make it 4-4 in the last seconds? Also away goals counted double after et in those days. Shame they still don’t as villa would be gone.

Re: away goals after extra-time, that was scrapped after the 98/99 season - so was in play for our playoff loss to Sunderland but not the Forest one.

Ha yep, that's what I was thinking of. No idea if it's true, mind.
If I remember correctly, the story was that he took a dump in the 18th hole at The Belfry (where Warnock had taken the squad for a bit of team building). Sounds like an urban myth.

Didn’t we get through against Ipswich on away goals after extra time for the Palace final? Scottish striker scored?

I think I'm right in saying the Ipswich chairman Sheepshanks, who was on the FA, wasn't happy about the away goals after that and campaigned for it to be removed.

It was removed, and the first playoffs after saw Ipswich lose when they would have gone through if away goals still counted :D

I seem to remember Jack Lester going on a mazy run and testing Kenny, although i might be getting confused with their last goal because i think he was involved in that.

Haha! Bless ‘em!
It wasn’t fair though - away goals should’ve only counted after 90mins. You shouldn’t get an extra 30mins to score an away goal just because you happen to be away in the 2nd leg. It actually punishes the team who finished higher in the league as they’re at home in the 2nd leg.
Oh well, this is the first season I’ve developed a soft spot for Ipswich (due to them being shite and sympathetic, their fans be rather decent in our last home game and Benny Bloom’s vids)...used to hate ‘em as they always seemed to do alright against us (Particularly Marcus Stewart, Darren Bent, David Johnson, Kieron Dyer)

No you are definitely wrong in saying that , Ipswich lost 1-0 home and away to Charlton who eventually played Sunderland in the mendonca final ,

I'd have definitely been right if I'd have said the year after in 1999 when Ipswich would have gone through on away goals at Bolton.
