I love your enthusiasm but that would require Champions League form from the team who’s just set the record for the worst ever start to a season in history. I’m not throwing cold water on your post, but we have to be realistic. If we get up to around 25 points, we’ll have done pretty well in the second half of the season and can hold our heads up.

If we still had a bit of cash in the pot, 9 points wouldnt be insurmountable at this stage, IF we spent it wisely and got the right players in. Unfortunately, the squad just doesnt have enough quality to generate the form required to get out of this imo.

If this gives us a bit of a momentum then maybe but I can't see it.

I dont think we will finish bottom though.

Avoid finishing bottom - West Brom are very catchable

All these are achievable. Anything more will require some major shock / unexpected wins.

Off course if we got 6 or 7 points from the next 3 games (predict none) then that would throw a totally different light on it.

Until we met a team totally unwilling to pressure us, i thought our performances had got worse since his injury.

Let’s aim for West Brom, then if we get past them aim for the next team. If we play like we did last night we will do well in the second half of the season.

.I thought last nights style of play was, last seasons style of play, fast paced one touch pass and movement that has unsettled far better sides than Newcastle United and would do again.

Premier League sides dont like to be put on their back foot, the better teams thrive when everyone plays the in the same predictable shape and style. We must maintain the standards we set last night, if we are to survive, the work ethic and slick inter passing attacks we saw last year and again last night, is the only hope we have.

Sadly, in my opinion, the number one thing that would derail any hope of survival, would be the reintroduction of Sander Berge.

Correct, in fact i find him the same as Montgomery tbh, once he gets the ball under control (after 3 attempts) the ball gets to him and we go backwards, sideways, or anywhere apart from going forwards, i honestly think we could have done a lot better for the money we laid out for him, he's not creative in any way, we have the pace up front, we need a good midfielder to thread the ball through to them, sadly this is not Berger and never will be,

It's a huge ask but in many ways the pressure is off, as most have understandably written us off now. So just go out and play with freedom, take one game at a time and see where we end up.

I absolutely agree about Sander Berge. We are so much slower and predictable when he is playing. So many times in matches this season when we have regained possession (we cant waste these opportunities when were not creating load of openings) and had the chance to stretch teams by getting forward quicker, as soon as Berge gets the ball we go sideways and backwards.

Actually I think Berge is a very good player in deed, but some how I don't think he fits in with the style we play best. Maybe he's one for the future but at present he seems to throw the "up and at em " type play that Mr Wilder and most of us love to see, out of sync,.....

Now the pressure is off that should help us play with the same freedom we did last season and with that results should follow. But yeah agree we probaby need to turn over some of the big boys aswell.

In our previous great escape season, Boxing Day 1990 saw our second win of the season - a 1-0 win at Luton. It was our 18th game and put us on 10 points. However, we were still 7 points behind 4th from bottom. That season we would have needed 38 points to stop up, we finished on 46. It wasn't all plain sailing to the end of the season - our 19th game was a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal. We won game 20 but then lost the next two before winning game 23. We actually won 7 on the trot from game 23 including wins against Manchester United and Chelsea.

Two went down that season so 35 points would have been enough for us to stay up
