Spot the big error

1. Sheffield United were formed in 1889 at the Adelphi Hotel, Sheffield (now the site of the Crucible Theatre), as a way of keeping the Sheffield United Cricket Club occupied during the winter close season.

2. United won the league title in 1898 and the FA Cup in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925.

3. Bramall Lane is widely regarded as the oldest ground anywhere in the world, first used in a game between Hallam and Sheffield Club in 1862.

4. The club’s darkest days were between 1975 and 1982, when they were relegated three times in six seasons.

5. There was an upturn in fortunes for the Blades in the late 1980s following the arrival of manager Dave Bassett. The club secured successive promotions in 1989 and 1990 and played in the first ever Premier League season in 1992.

6. United have a range of songs sung by the fans, the most notable being their unofficial anthem ‘The Greasy Chip Butty’ song.

7. As well as neighbours Sheffield Wednesday, United fans also have a fierce rivalry with Nottingham Forest, attributed to the miners’ strike of the 1980s, when workers of the Nottingham pit refused to join the strike.

8. Actor Sean Bean, former Sports Minister Richard Caborn and Michael Palin are all keen supporters of the Blades.

9. Ex-Blades’ midfielder Alex Sabella was one of the first South American’s to play in the English Football League having arrived at Bramall Lane in the mid to late 1970’s.

10. Former United striker Brian Deane scored the first ever goal in the Premier League in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

I can spot a few that could be considered inaccuracies.

1. Sheffield United were formed in 1889 at the Adelphi Hotel, Sheffield (now the site of the Crucible Theatre), as a way of keeping the Sheffield United Cricket Club occupied during the winter close season.

Not entirely true. We were formed because the cricket club was skint and saw what a money-spinner previous football matches had been at the Lane.

3. Bramall Lane is widely regarded as the oldest ground anywhere in the world, first used in a game between Hallam and Sheffield Club in 1862.

Oldest league ground still in existence maybe, but the oldest football ground proper, as it were, is the home of Hallam FC, Sandygate... built in 1804. Recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest.

8. Actor Sean Bean, former Sports Minister Richard Caborn and Michael Palin are all keen supporters of the Blades.

The last one is open for debate (but let's not eh? :D)

10. Former United striker Brian Deane scored the first ever goal in the Premier League in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

T'was Manchester United.

60% of it might be right though :D

Thats why I went for big error Linz, just surprised that someone who proports to be a football expert publishes with such a big error as it is well documented with it being the Premiership.

Yep, go buy yourself a new car and send me the receipt!

Ronaldo is selling his, I'll send the receipt straight on, he can wait for your cheque in the post, I'm sure he's got enough to see him through 'til your money lands on his doormat!

I read/heard that Bramall Lane is the oldest sporting venue still in use.
Also we were the first team with Arsenal, to play a floodlit match at Arsenal.

It was Manchester United, but we also beat them 2-1 Deano grabbed both goals.

Ish. As Linz says, one of the main reasons to form the club was the huge amount of £££ which could be generated, but the club itsef was also officially created on Norfolk Row. There's a plaque there commemorating it.

Give 'em that one ;)

Not really, but it is widely regarded as the oldest continually used major football stadium.

Hmmmm ..... grudgingly correct .....

Happy to agree :D

For an unofficial anthem, it's about as official as it gets! I suppose they mean official as in "Play The Ball, City" for Norwich, and all the rest of that rubbish. Very nitpicky of me though, but I'm in one of those moods.

No, it was because they broke the strike, having been bribed back by the Tories. They had been involved in the 'all out' action to start with.

Palin refuses to be drawn on it, doesn't he? Anyway .....

Since when was the summer of 1978 anything to do with the mid-70s ;)

Ahem ..... we all know the mistakes here! Just to add though, Deano is the only player to have signed for United three times.

I'll tell Hallam that we can't possibly play at their ground next Wednesday then because they don't use it any more :D

Like I said, Bramall Lane is regarded as the oldest league ground still in use, but it doesn't outdate Sandygate... which is a football ground, of sorts.

But hasn't been in continual use throughout that time ..... apparently ..... Bramall Lane has.

the ten things I know about the blades

1) We never win anything worth winning(in the modern game that is)
2) Referees hate us
3) We are at our best when the world is against us
4) We arent popular in East London
5) or S6 for that matter
6) 1-0 up is never enough
7) Sheffield City Council are introducing car parking charges around the ground to get at the 'tevez' money
8) We are a global brand, but not on this globe
9) the club think coporate supporters are more valuable than us fantatical nutters that buy season tickets
10) Some of our supporter are grumpy old men... Not me of course

Keep smiling only 5 weeks to go and then we can all be happy again.

No probs I am sure my recent redundancy money will cover the petrol in the tank, enjoy driving it.

p.s. if he does let you have it on the say that I will pay lets do it again to lots of people, I always wondered what you had to do to be a con artist :hello:

How can continual use be defined?

One day, one week, one year, one decade, one century?

:)

I knew some bugger would come up with that!

I think that the way the esteemed anoraks belonging to Mr Clarebrough and Mr Kirkham mean is that the purpose has been regularly used for sporting and/or footballing purposes on a regular basis through a season, and with unified rules.

It was also used regularly for cricket (hence the 'sporting venue' thing). I do agree that it's somewhat loose, because Ashbourne as a whole might have a claim to be the oldest football venue otherwise!

Weren't we one of the first two teams to play in a match that was broadcast live on the radio with commentary?

The worlds first ever floodlit football match took place at Bramall Lane on 14 October 1878 in front of an attendance of 20,000

Weren't we one of the first to use actual nets in the goals as well?
