Egan, beattie, ched?? Marcus bent?? Akinbiyi?? Now I'm stuck, oh and deano? And I bet Claude feckin Davis is in there

Not sure of the exact order but I'd guess at...

Egan
Beattie
Evans
Davis
Hulse
Brayford
Kilgallon
Akinbiyi
Stead
Horsfield

Just realised I've named our ten most expensive players, not our last ten record signings.

I remember smashing our record signing with Jamie Hoyland for £250k if that helps?

Egan
Beattie
Davis
Akinbiyi
Ebbrell
Hutchison

That would be my best guess for the last 6, I’m not old enough to remember any further back.

Cotterill is probably in there. Sabella. Vinnie Jones. Don Hutchison. James Beattie

go on then name our last 10.

Do you mean our most expensive signings, or our record signings? The likes of Evans don’t fit into the latter.

Of those that broke the record at the time, presumably it’s this?

Other question – with today’s signing, has there been a longer period than 11 years where the transfer record has held?

Egan (over £4m) 2018
Beattie (£4m) 2007
Davis (£3m) 2006
Akinbiyi (£1.75m) 2005
Deane (£1.5m) 1997
Hutchison (£1.2m) 1996
Jones (£700k) 1990
Beesley (£375k) 1990
Morris (£160k) 1989
Young (£160k) 1982

Wasn’t Paul Ifil one, or am I making it up?

Egan
Beattie
Davis (Hulse for the same fee a month later)
Akinbiyi

Off the top of my head and don’t know any further back, but very confident in the above. Ched signed after Beattie for a lower fee and so was never a record signing.

Sabella (160k) 1978?
At the time a huge sum for us

Richard Cadette - £125k, 4 foot 9 inch target man. Most money to come from Blades Revival? Seem some fucking shit in my time but this one took the biscuit. Saw him outside Scunthorpe’s old ground in 1987 after a pre season friendly. He was wearing a suit that would look have looked too big on Brian Deane. The 87/88 side, fuck me, I need a Valium to calm my nerves down.

Looking forward to the day when our record signing is more expensive than our record sale. Could be a while before we pay £12m+ for a player.

When I became a committed Blade in 1970, at the time our record signing was John Tudor (£65,000) in November 1968. Next one was Chris Guthrie (£90,000) in 1975 then Sabella (£160,000) in 1978, Mark Morris (£170,000) in 1989, Paul Beesley (£300,000) in summer 1990, the tosser (£650,000) in Sept 1990, Gayle (£700,00) in Sept 1991. Hutchison was our first £1M signing in 1996?

So in that case, does this sound right for the last 10?

Interesting that only 3 of those 10 are forwards, given that strikers are usually the most expensive players in football. 5 are central defenders!

I hope it is if Rhodes is 'worth' £10m-£12m.

And that's the thing - in CW we have another Dave Bassett, capable of spotting something in a player that others dismiss. Absolutely insane prices being paid/quoted at the moment. Shaqiri to Liverpool for £13m FFS? Not a Liverpool-type player and another Brian Howard in the making. Similar to the £50m being quoted for Maguire from both Manchester clubs. If either of these teams are serious about challenging Europe's elite, they should be looking at the likes of Varane, not a 'good, solid stopper'.

£13m is nothing for Shaqiri. He’s not a player you’d look to for consistentancy & having in the trenches with you, but he’ll be an impact sub/cup player. The money will be recouped quickly. It’s probably eaten up in a top 4 league placing & a decent champs league campaign. Liverpool spending over £70m all in on a above average keeper is the bad transfer.

Caramel is a great defender, but Maguire is a lot better than a ‘good, solid stopper’. Despite any limitations he may have, he is visibly improving and adapting to ever increasing levels of football. Which is near miraculous. He is also relatively young and well worth £50m in today’s money. Also if you are playing 3 cb’s it’s nice to have a mix, bread, ham & mustard. :)
