If only that meeting in March 1889 on Norfolk Row had finished with them all agreeing not to bother. 'Too much bloody hassle'.
I do sometimes wonder what would have happened had the football club not formed at the Lane.

If SUFC didn't exist we'd all be Wednesday fans. With one club from a city that can support 65k+ fans in the top flight, it may have been really successful.

Of course the real reason we don't have one single successful club in Sheffield isn't the fault of the Blades for forming, it's the fault of the pigs for deserting the greatest stadium in the world.

controversial this but .. it's because YCC tried to overcharge them the rent so they buggered off.. YCC realised how much revenue they'd lost and had to form their own team.. and the rest as they say..

They only played big games there though. Never their ground.

If only we'd endeavoured earlier and been resilient for longer.

I've often wondered though if as many people would have been interested if there wasn't the rivalry? Is that one of the reasons so many of us get into football?

Anyway to contribute positively, if only on 19th August 2006 Rob Styles had not either (a) allegedly to some, cheated United deliberately or (b) devised a new rule of "intent to commit a foul", which FIFA subsequently failed to ratify in its rule book on the basis that the provision of lie detector and brain scanning equipment at major football stadia to ascertain intent would lead to the games lasting four days following the calling of expert witnesses for each side to interpret the scientific evidence. A spokesman for FIFA subsequently thanked Mr Styles for his innovative extempore contribution to the rule book lasting for one game and the large bag of cash resulting from the successful bets placed. (Just Joking)

Gerrard wasn't fouled for that infamous penalty...

Oh hang on...... Wanker ref... Intent, my Arse...

So it's cricket's fault? I'm ok with blaming cricket.

Interesting point. Would the rivalry with Leeds be more fierce?

I guess so, like Sunderland/Newcastle or Forest/Derby but it's quite a distance. I don't know many people from Leeds and never had and I'm not sure it's the same as working with pigs, having mates/family who support the dark side.

It didn't really work for Leeds though, did it? Shouldn't they be one of the biggest clubs in the country based on that? The flip side is maybe the rivalry within the city is what has made the two clubs grow to the relatively equal size they are. I mean, obviously, we're not MASSIVE, like them, but you know what I mean.

On the if only.... thing, I always wonder, if only Adolf hadn't bombed the Lane. Wasn't that the main reason we were slow off the blocks after the war?

seems fitting that both Dingles and Gillingham slipped up again and if only...we'd won we'd still be in it.

Fitting that it's our crapness that means next week is meaningless

...and today's results confirm that we can't even finish 7th, as we did in the Clough / Wier season. So officially our worst finish in 33 years.
