These six results would leave us in the play off places at 5pm Saturday

Tuesday 19th April

Rochdale 3, Gillingham 0,

Shrewsbury 0, Blades 2

Barnsley 1, Peterboro 1

Saturday 23rd April

Blades 3, Barnsley 0

Port Vale 1, Rochdale 1

Gillingham 0, Shrewsbury 2

It's simple. All we need to do is win four games of football.

I'm looking forward to getting tanked 3-0 tomorrow by a 3rd/4th division yo-yo club so we can all shut up about this "getting promoted" nonsense, and go on our jollies. I know there are numerous permutations that will see us bellowing in ecstasy at the completion of a Billy Sharp hatrick in that big plastic monstrosity in Zone 4 come the end of May, but come on, fellas. It's over.

I know, never say never and all that. But let's face it. It's done. The fat lady hasn't sung yet, but she's done all her warm-ups and the theatre orderly has just popped his head round her dressing room door. "5 minutes, ma'am."

Actually it would leave us 7th on alphabetical order, behind Gillingham.

Having looked into it, it wouldn't even be alphabetical. If we had equal points, goal difference and goals scored to Gillingham then they'd finish above us due to our matches against them. They gained more points than us (4 vs. 1) in matches between the 2 teams.

All hypothetical, of course... I just enjoy looking into tiebreakers. o_O

This is what the rules say:

9.1 At the end of each Season the Club in each Division scoring the highest number of points shall be declared the Champion Club of that Division. Three points shall be awarded for each League Match won. One point will be awarded to each Club for a drawn match. If two or more Clubs have scored the same number of points their position in the Division shall be determined on goal difference, that is to say, the difference between the total number of goals scored by and against a Club in League Matches in that Season, and the higher or highest placed Club shall be the Club with the highest goal difference. If any two or more Clubs have scored the same number of points and have the same goal difference the higher or highest placed Club shall be the Club having scored the most goals in League Matches in that Season.

9.2 If two or more Clubs have the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored the highest placed Club shall be determined by the respective League records against each other, taking into account in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored. If the above procedures do not separate the Clubs, then the Clubs concerned shall play off a deciding League Match or Matches under arrangements approved by the Board on a neutral ground. The net gate money after deducting the usual match expenses shall be equally divided between the two competing Clubs. Any Club staging such a play off match shall be entitled to charge as an expense against the receipts of the match 10% of the gross gate receipts after deduction of Value Added Tax. In the event of such a match being arranged by the Board to be played on the ground of a Club which is not a member of The League, then a similar charge as an expense against the receipts of the match shall be paid by The League who shall otherwise be responsible for the financial arrangements made with the Club staging the match. These provisions shall determine the ranking of Clubs in their respective Divisions

It would be just like us to win the next three, be in 6th place on 8th May, know that it is in our hands needing 3 points in the last game of the season to secure our play off place, welcome Scunny to the Lane and get a draw :(

Loving it...some reyt 'straw clutching' on here...well done lads!

UTB!

With Martyn Woolford being the hero!!

2 assists and the winning goal for him that day.

In all seriousness. It’s virtually impossible. I’d like to see us try to win every game and see where it takes us but it’s very unlikely we’ll make it. It’d be nice if we could finish on a relative high, maybe finish 7th ahead of the dingles and have some optimism for next season. Maybe we could even match our points tally from last season which would be an impressive achievement for Adkins in the circumstances.

points totals vary every season
we got 90 one year and finished 3rd didnt we ,
every year since wed have gone up automatically

the only way Adkins will match Clough is to sneak into 6th, IE GET IN A PLAY OFF SPOT

Can't see us getting into the playoffs, but if we did, I can't see beyond us winning the fucker at last

It's a huge task to win all remaining games, but usually one team goes on a strong run at the end of the season, and it looks like it might be us!

It's a real long shot, but we will have to just wait and see

So he can’t match him by equalling or exceeding his points total but he can match him by finishing one place lower than Clough did regardless of points gained? Typical blade too long logic at work there.

If Adkins manages to get the same or more points than Clough did despite

a) it not being his team as it was Clough’s

b) having had his best player sold whilst also reducing the size of the squad

c) not being able to go out and spend the best part of £2million on a player in January as Clough did

d) having inherited injuries to a significant chunk of the squad (Done, Flynn, Harris, Brayford, Coutts etc.)

then I’d say he will have done significantly better than Clough did in the grand scheme of things. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the points spread will be as kind to us this season as it was last season.

Hope we do it but something is telling me.........

getting a play off spot be it 3rd 4th 5th or 6th gets you in the play offs
the logic is 3rd or th get the same chance
he inherited a squad that finished 5th and then Adkins let his first player Murphy go , any new manager inherits someone elses players
MOST TEAMS HAVE INJURED PLAYERS
and we dont know how much he was given to buy Burn BUT IT WONT HAVE BEEN CHEAP

Funniest thing ever would be if we sneaked in, won the play offs and Burton finished 3rd and didn't go up.

Wouldn't wanna meet Burton at Wembley though. Clough likes a cup game
