RUN IN, PREDICTIONS AND EVIDENCE WE CAN STILL DO IT.

A mate of mine (Wendy fan) just got 40-1 on us to win playoffs. I had a bit of a laugh at him and told him he had no chance. He then told me to look at the league and fixtures of those around us.

Pretty much what the OP said, it's not quite as far away as i'd thought. I still sit on the side that it's very unlikely however if we beat the mighty Shrewsbury (and hopefully we'll want to pay them back for last time) on Tuesday it'll make the Dingles game a lot more interesting that anticipated.

Like I said, probably no chance but then again...

He could've (should've) got 100/1 with Coral or William Hill.

I had a pound on at 200/1 with skybet when i was putting my Saturday footy bet on about a month ago. Now 50/1 with skybet. ;)

I must admit, after the game on Saturday I allowed myself a small amount of optimism. If we can win all our remaining games, that would give us 74 points which is normally enough for a play-off place. We finished 5th with 71 points last season - interesting that if we take 10 points from our remaining games, we'll have more than last season even though most of us would probably think we've had a worse season this season.

Anyway, I'm not so sure that Gillingham will fail to get the 7 points from their remaining games that would prevent us from finishing in the top six. That is assuming those above them will also finish with 75 points or more.

What betting we finish 7th on goal difference behind Gillingham with them having beaten us 4-0 and us being so unlucky not to win at home?

Shrewsbury 0-1 Sheffield United
Sheffield United 2-2 Barnsley
Coventry 1-1 Sheffield United
Sheffield United 2-1 Scunthorpe

Mix of optimism and realism in there. Optimistic to record back-to-back wins for the first time since December against a team scrapping for their lives, and realistic to draw the games that we need to win to have a chance of nicking 6th! Going for a win against Adkins' old club to finish the season off.

The problem optimists have is that they often mistake possible for probable.

Best stick to cynicism.

The bookies are normally right, and the Blades' odds of reaching the play offs are between 14 and 16/1. That looks decent value when you look at the fixtures. But still, I doubt our chance is better than 8 or 10/1

Rochdale are 5-1 or 9/2 with just two more points than us.

Reason 2: Gillingham on absolute terrible form for quite a while, many reasons to suggest that the only reason they are still up there is because they beat us 4-0 at the start of the season (Great Memories).

Not sure that beating us 4-0 is the ONLY reason they're in the top 6 with 4 games to play.

Love your optimism mate but even I've thrown the towel in.

Would these be the very same bookies who tipped us for automatic promotion?

Even though most of you seem to have given up on promotion this year, here are many reasons why we can still do it.

Reason 1: We have made Bramall Lane a fortress with 4 games unbeaten with 3 wins, 1 draw, 8 goals, 3 clean sheets, 2 goals conceded and We even beat Walsall who before us I believe only lost 1 away game.

Reason 2: Gillingham on absolute terrible form for quite a while, many reasons to suggest that the only reason they are still up there is because they beat us 4-0 at the start of the season (Great Memories).

Furthermore, when they played us they didn't even seem to be looking for a win, seemed to be playing for a draw or just trying to knick a winner. They also have 1 win in 6, so they are dropping the points.

Additionally, have you seen their run in, it's painful, they will be dropping points left right centre with their run in involving teams such as Burton and Millwall, to teams fighting for a win in order to get promotion. They also play a team fighting for survival, Shrewsbury, we for one know what a destructive power they can be. They also play another team fighting to knick a playoff spot, Rochdale (hopefully just a draw in that game). But, can't you see it's possibly?

Reason 3: I no a bunch of you are shouting at the screen "BARNSLEY AND ROCHDALE ARE ABOVE US", Well they are very catchable, but here it comes, for us to overtake Barnsley we have to beat them and hope they lose or draw a game while we win in order for us to leap frog them into the last playoff spot, however this is easier then it sounds, as they play high flying wigan, who just came lost there first game in 21 games, but surely they can pull together and on the last day beat barnsley for us in order for us to knick that spot.

Now for Rochdale, who would have thought it, Rochdale above the mighty Blades, well it won't be for long, or will it, hopefully Gillingham will draw against Rochdale in order for us to leap frog them on goal difference, as Rochdale have a moderately easy run in, but could face some difficulty on the way, such as Swindon, they have the topscorer in the league, hopefully he can grab some goals against them.

Conclusion: In order to get into the playoff we have to hope teams fault and that we don't. It is possible, WE JUST NEED TO BELIEVE IN THE MIGHTY BLADES.
Your positivity and is to be admired, however the reality is one bad result and the season is over. I do not believe in this set of players or this manager. This set of players has failed to put a decent winning run together all season and there is nothing to suggest they will suddenly be able to win five games in a row, for the first time this season, which is what is required. Before winning at Chesterfield, we had lost four out of our previous five away games and needed a injury time equaliser at Fleetwood, to prevent it being five away defeats in a row. Its very unlikely, with how bad the away form has been, that we will win the remaining two away games. Although our recent performances have improved, this has been when the pressure for results had ended, as everyone believed any realistic chance of the play offs had gone. Lets get real, we lost at Southend the last but one away game, this set of players has not suddenly turned into Real Madrid. We have had three good performaces in a row and one of those ended up as a home draw. Its easy to relax and play better when the pressures off, especially when its the time of year for contract extensions. If we managed by some miracle to get into the play offs, theres evey chance this bunch would then bottle it and not turn up and perform in the play offs.
The last few games has not changed my opinion on Adkins or the players performance this season. This has been a terrible season and three performances have not convinced me that next year is going to be anything other than a further season of struggle.

Lets leave the "We still can", "We might just", "The others have tough games" talk until next Monday. IF and only IF we have cut it to 3 points on 6th by then lets have this discussion.

I'm thinking it will pan out like this:

run in.jpg

Which would see the table ending as so..

  1. Wigan
  2. Burton
  3. Bradford 79
  4. Millwall 79
  5. Rochdale - 74
  6. Gillingham 73
  7. Barnsley - 70
  8. SUFC - 70

IF we made the play-offs we'd have more momentum than the most momentumest team in the history of momentum. But we won't. So why get stressed abart it?

in Adkins cv is the fact that Scunny scraped into the 2009 play offs surprisingly on the last day , and then won the play offs ,
beating Millwall 2=3 sufc in the final su being scunny

deja vu anyone

With Martyn Woolford being the hero!!

2 assists and the winning goal for him that day.

In all seriousness. It’s virtually impossible. I’d like to see us try to win every game and see where it takes us but it’s very unlikely we’ll make it. It’d be nice if we could finish on a relative high, maybe finish 7th ahead of the dingles and have some optimism for next season. Maybe we could even match our points tally from last season which would be an impressive achievement for Adkins in the circumstances.

I've just put a fiver on us at 100/1. Well, you never know when you're gonna be surprised :)

If you knew when you were going to be surprised, well it wouldn't be a surprise.

Unless you knew you were going to be surprised but then the surprise never happened, which would in itself be surprising.

Oh and we've no chance, but I'll still retain hope until its mathematically impossible.

Tuesday night 10pm, if we win & Gillingham lose...
