Just listened to the full interview – last couple of mins are on this rumour, and the "mutual consent" part was also pressed on by Staton. If he's agreed to leave he's hiding it pretty well, because he certainly didn't sound like he's imminently off.

Let's say 10 people know someone is leaving by mutual consent but only 1 knows it's Adkins, if SJH comes spouting off that it's Adkins that is leaving, he's effectively found himself out.

Conversely, if 9 people know Adkins is leaving by mutual consent and there's 1 that doesn't know it's Adkins, he has effectively covered his tracks as he doesn't explicitly mention Adkins.

But then we have to question why anyone would know someone's leaving, why they're leaving, but not know who it is, AND think that passing on something they know so little about is worthwhile.

Could be that his contract allowed us to pay him minimal compensation and relieve him of his job if we are not promoted this season. Thus the reason for his emphasis on getting promotion, I.e. We must get promoted this season, which was often quoted at the start of the season.
Did we want rid of him and subsequently did not provide him with any January transfer funds?

No, it's more likely that his contract contains a large promotion bonus (if we go up this season). There is a legal argument that if they sack him before he has the opportunity to get us promoted they have 'frustrated' him and the bonus has to be included in any compensation package.

I don't know whether him leaving is true or not but 1 thing you can be a 100 per cent certain of is, if true, Adkins would strongly deny it before any official announcement. So the interview doesn't disprove anything.

I would expect he had been made aware of the rumours if not true so it doesn't prove anything either.

When I say heard it for the "first time", I don't mean the rumour, I mean as in he, himself knowing about a clause in his contract for example. I don't think he was aware of the rumours from what he was saying, but he just didn't seem to have a reaction that would contain the surprise you would expect it to if he genuinely did not have a clue about a clause or absolutely anything else to do with it.

And as you say, SJH clearly knows what is going on behind the scenes, nobody can even question that.
