No. Porterfield signed him in February 1982. The above photo was taken in 1979Colin Morris standing to McPhail's left?
OK, from left-to-right - John Matthews, John Cutbush, Micky Guy, Craig Renwick, Dougie Brown, Gary Hamson, Steve Finnieston, Paul Garner, Tony Moore, John McPhail, ???, ???, John Flood, ???, ???, ???, Happy Harry Haslam, Tony Kenworthy, ???, Les Tibbott, Ian Benjamin, ???, Mick Speight, Steve Conroy, and Cec Coldwell .... Some decent players there.
He was allowed to arrive late for pre-season training. The photo will have been taken just before Gary Hamson's move to L**dsOne notable absentee, unless hidden behind the Manager.
Alejandro Sabella.
I got the Phil bitNot Steve Finnieston, think it is Brian McGarry. Richard Harwood is second player to John Flood's left. Phil Jones is between Ian Benjamin and Mick Speight

Phil Jones either played in centre midfield or at centre back. I remember newspaper reports linking him to clubs in higher division and I was surprised at the rumoured offers. Think it was Porterfield who let him go to Boston UnitedI got the Phil bit
Was thinking John Phillips but knew that was wrong. Phil Jones. Right Back. That's who I was really thinking - cheers, Silent - as ever![]()
Hamson's goal to beat the dirties in the league cup the year before. Screamer! He was allowed to arrive late for pre-season training. The photo will have been taken just before Gary Hamson's move to L**ds
Could've sworn he also played RBPhil Jones either played in centre midfield or at centre back. I remember newspaper reports linking him to clubs in higher division and I was surprised at the rumoured offers. Think it was Porterfield who let him go to Boston United

Just looked up in complete records. Jones wore number 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 11 shirts! Not number 2 or 10! Dont remember him playing at left back. He was right footed and I would have thought he would have been more likely to play at RB than LB!Could've sworn he also played RB
Recall him playing in midfield and makeshift CB but I have a vision of him running the channels and tracking back. But, hey, I'm not going to argue with your recall.
See 1.27 for the foul. Colin Tartt (Chesterfield number 2) taking the mickey out of John McPhail's protest!Centre back.
His most defining moment for me, 1-0 up v Chesterfield, FACup at BDTBL.
Alan Birch got the ball in the penalty area, Kop End, almost last minute...
Do I need to go on!!
Ended 1-1.
Lost replay.
I think Tony Moore still holds the record for fastest-ever Blades own goal, something like 12 seconds, away to Exeter in the old Third Division. I think we went 2 down after three minutes losing 3-1 in the end. Not sure if even the present team could beat that ... but you never know, still some games to go this season![]()
FFS imagine travelling all the way down to Exeter to see us beaten inside the first couple of minutes........ Who said it was just the last 5 seasons the blades have frustrated the tits off us eh?
Of course you are correct."Dirties" - Leeds United?
Against Liverpool yes, our second round tie vs Leeds United saw Currie return to a fog bound BDTBL and we lost 1-4, Cliff Calvert scored. Well that's what the records say, I never saw it.
