I'd be interested to know how this developed.

When I was growing up I presumed it was some sort of co-incidence that the Number 10s were often the creative players. Did it have the prestige then it has now? Did TC want the shirt? Did someone give it him? Not suggesting you can answer these - just thinking out loud.

No coincidence.

The numbering remained from the old 235 formation, sorry Nigel 1235, and the number ten was an inside forward whereas the nine was the striker.
When we went to 442, in theory, one of the inside forwards is played deeper, as the attacking CM, (8), and the other as the more creative of the strike partnership (10). The number nine traditionally being the big bruiser.

Dont think TC was fussed about what number shirt he was wearing from 1968 to 1970

Out of interest, did our formation change much during the time he was with us and did TC's role change as he matured? Was he pushed further forward?
I've only really seen his goals and he seemed to pop up all over the place.
Only saw him play after he'd retired unfortunately, Cec Coldwell's testimonial I think.

LSF and Shalalalafenoughty will explain about our formation in 1968 and 1969 as I wasnt a committed Blade yet. In the second half of the 1969-70 season our defence was nearly always Hodgy, Badger, Hemsley, Powell and Colquhoun. TC, Barlow and Salmons were the usual midfielders but Salmons attacked a lot on the left. Barlow was a clever player with good vision but lacked pace. TC was the box to box midfielder with flair. Woody was easily the best player in the division that season. Reece was still a good attacking threat. Fans preferred Tudor than Addison but Harris picked Addison as the deep lying number 9 who can hold the ball up so Tudor was the usual sub.
From September Harris decided that Dearden and Tudor be our two strikers, Addison replacing the disappointing new signing Barnwell in midfield, it was either Reece or Salmons that was the sub and it was more or less the same for the rest of the team but Barlow was playing less games. In January Harris decided to sign a new keeper (it was the correct decision as Hope played very well for the rest of the season) he was happy with our back four but, with Addison being injured and Barnwell being a disappointment in his return despite scoring twice early in his comeback game he felt he needed more bite in the middle to allow TC be more creative and play a bit higher so he brought in Hockey and sold Tudor. Reece coming back to play for the rest of the season. In March , Powell had a bad injury which ruled him out for the rest of the season so Barlow was brought back into the team. With 7 games left Flynn was surprisingly back into the team despite having played only two games all season and did ok. For the last 4 games (3-0 v Birmingham, 1-1 at Boro, 5-1 v Cardiff and 3-0 v Watford) the team and formation was like this

--------------------------Hope
Badger Colquhoun Flynn Hemsley
--------------------------Hockey
-------------TC------------ Salmons
Woody ------------------------------------- Reece
------------Dearden

For the first few months of the 1971-72 season it was the same formation with new signing Scullion in Reece's place. Until 1975 Badger, Colquhoun, Hemsley, TC, Woody, Dearden and Salmons (until 1974) were the regulars in their usual places with Eddy replacing Hockey from 1972 with Speight having more game time and Field replacing Salmons (who went to Stoke) from 1974

That was a great breakdown of how Harris formulated that promotion team silent ,he freshened the starting eleven quite a few times that season and the signing of Hope&Hockey was a vital factor as in my opinion we may have missed out. Ford came in with Hope but he didn't
Really make an impact, (after killing his girlfriend in that crash while at the pigs he never recovered his form) Hope &Hockey played a big part
in our great finish to the season I can still recall from memory some great matches with Cardiff 5-1 the best followed by that great final match at the lane when we clinched it 3-0 against Watford

Didnt know about Ford and his girlfriend, that is sad. He left Wendy to go to Newcastle in 1969 with Sinclair going the other way

He had a crash (lodge moor) he also was injured but not seriously. He was a really good player for pigs and was very tricky, strong and quick
but never recovered his form after the crash, pigs sold him to toon we took him from toon but he was a shadow of what he was before the crash,

David Fords girlfriend was in my sisters class at school. It's accurate to say that Ford was never the same player after the crash.
Whether it was physical or psychological, who knows? But he was an excellent player in his early Hillsborough days, quick strong and direct. The Bramall Lane version was a mere shadow of that player.

Is it the same David Ford whos got a plumbing ? company in Sheffield. I know Fantham had the hairdressers and Joicey was a car salesman.

Hull had some good players in those days, eg Wagstaff, Chris Chilton, Ian Butler, Terry Neil. Or have I made all those up ?

Chris Simpkin, what a dirty git
Roger Devries I can always remember Keith Macklin yelling his name on Sunday afternoons :)
