It's just an incentive to persuade people to book tickets in advance, which gives the club a clearer idea of the likely crowd and helps the club plan for the match better (number of pies, number of bar staff etc) in theory at least.

Look at it as a £2 saving for buying in advance rather than a £2 punishment for buying on the day.

which is fair enough I suppose

Is it? I've got a membership card and when I buy a ticket online it's either posted to me or I collect it on matchday.
I always thought it was loaded on the card. Lot of clubs now have done away with posting them out and you can just print them off like you do with airline boarding passes.

Only time I had one posted out was for the first home game when they sent it before the card, everything else went on the card

I bought on line for the peterborough match for the south stand, 1 adult 1 junior. When we can make it I usually ring up & 'load' our cards for the family stand but there was no-one to talk to (understandably) at certain points over christmas so decided to rough it.
Received an email saying collect tickets on matchday, picked envelope up on matchday, put it in pocket, went for beer, went to turnstile, only one ticket in envelope!
Went back to ticket office, "oh it'll be 'loaded' onto your membership card" !

So sometimes there's a 50:50 chance of a ticket or a 'load' !
