Right, first things first:
Not going to say 'I told you so.' There will be no easy games this season. Bury produced the type of display that we'll need to get out of this God-forsaken division. They didn't park the bus. They did (in the second half) enough to keep us wary at the back and so we couldn't go gung-ho and they've packed their team with hard, athletic, cynical players. Of course, having a gullible cunt of a ref. who had clearly lost control (at the start of the second half, their guy stood ten yards inside our half showed Bury's contempt for the ref.) is necessary to get away with such cynicism.
Just a look at Bury's line up - Clark, Rose, Mellis etc. shows they've recruited well.
Bury played the 'rotation system'. They rotated who would commit the next hacking down of a United player so that nobody got a red card (not that the ref. would have taken such decisive action) and it worked. Hack a player down (J C-R was kicked to pieces) in a position in United's half, give a free-kick away, get all eleven men back, job done.
However, there was much to admire about Bury. While we were content to put the ball out wide and send in a hopeful cross/shot, Bury's first spoke volumes. Around six of their players raced into our area with intent. That ball was going to go in the net. How many times did we have golden chances right in front of the net in the second half, but couldn't convert a single one?
A wake-up call and a bad day at the office, but I'm sure NA will have learned plenty (I bet he cannot believe how the standards have raised at this level since he last managed down here). Some new bodies still needed, but hopeful we'll get it right.
Your inverted snobbery of exaggerating the strength of the opposition and belittling our own club is both noted and expected. Even if we win the next 10 games, some of you will cling to the Gillngham defeat like barnacles.
It's the Bladesfans' Way.
