2-2.5 million is a great price for him. Won't be too bothered as long as we have somebody lined up to replace him.

I have faith in Adkins when he says that any good manager "doesn't make a habit of selling the better players", I honestly think that Adkins rates him highly and will do everything that he possibly can to keep him at the club.

I hope he's got a mallet or a bottle of chloroform handy then.

Would be about right for us if we sold him.

Then we will get told the FFP bullshit to justify the sale as well.

I really didn't see this one coming. Adkins doesn't wanna sell him, we don't need the money, Murphy seems to love the club and is settled here with a young family.
Really surprised if this comes together, although we must be getting a decent fee for him which HAS to be reinvested in the squad.
How do you know we don't need the money? We vastly overspent last season and we may have sod all left for Adkins ( I'm not saying we should sell him by the way)

Love Murphy when he is on song ...can do the unexpected....he does disappear in games though and at Gilligham he not only disappeared (but still had our best chance ) but was powder-puff..easily knocked off the ball......don't think we should sell but £2m....hmmmm...

Just my opinion, if we were struggling financially then I would have thought our first actions this summer would have been to trim down the size of the squad, but Adkins seems really relaxed about that situation.

I did a post on the "John Brayford" thread yesterday and identified Murphy as was one of only 4 players I deemed good/reliable enough for the promotion push. If we're losing him, one of only two or three attacking threats we have, then we can forget it.

I'm sorry, but Adkins said he didn't want to sell him. He's contracted to the club long term, a contract which he signed only a few months ago, so he can't be that unhappy. Maybe he's had his head turned a bit, but for once we needed the board to hold firm. If we're selling him it yet again shows no long term thinking. It's a really poor move by the club, particularly after the weekends result. Another slap in the face. When are we going to learn from our mistakes? The new board have just picked up where the last one left off. 1 week into the new season and I'm losing all interest.

We can only move on players if other clubs are prepared to have them, pay any transfer fee and the wages. I suspect (just an opinion)that we went vastly over our budget last season and somehow need to re-coup some of the money back

Exactly, he's not made of glass like half of our squad, another reason he's such an important asset for us. Even when his form dips he provides two or three crucial contributions in matches, he's involved in nearly all of our goals. He tried Scougall on the wing against Hull and it was terrible viewing. I'm so disappointed with this.

Maybe that is the case, but surely you don't go about that by selling arguably your best player... Oh wait, this is United, maybe you have a point

I agree with this. I really don't think he is worth £2m. The main issue is that we almost certainly won't reinvest the money in the team. If we sold him and brought in 3 or 4 good players with the money then I could see the logic. What I imagine will happen though is that we will sell him and get a couple of average loan signings in

You do have to question whether the board actually want to go up. Is it in some way cheaper and easier to stay in this league? I don't know but I know selling your best player every season is a strange way to go about trying to gain promotion

From Twitter...

@SkyBetChampo: Brighton are poised to complete the signing of Jamie Murphy from Sheffield United, according to Sky Sources.

Could be usual Twitter BS
You do know that this is not an official account don't you ?

I've got Sky Sports news on constant and have heard nothing yet on this......although i did do a spot of hoovering :D

I agree to a certain extent but the Board has given the last manager money to spend and he subsequently failed. If we hadn't spent the money on Brayford,I just wonder if we would reject any offer for Murphy (if an offer had been made ) I suspect we will be making a loss each season. At what point does an offer become too good to turn down especially when we are in the 3rd tier?

Cheers Roy thats exactly the point. It is madness to sell him.

Totally agree

Does seem like that sometimes, and yet all they had to do to achieve that was keep Clough, had a great track record at keeping teams in the same division.

You just know the 2m will be spreadover 10 years, be dependant on Brighton wining the Premier League, Scotland winning the World Cup and Murphy scoring 30 goals a season for the next 5 years.

Expect less than a million up front. Always the same.
and some of it possibly going to Motherwell?

Agree with most of Roygbiv's comments. I also think that we should no longer refer to the board as a source of funding; who on the board, apart from the Prince, actually contribute to funding new players? It's now a one horse show, and I wonder what the remaining board members do to justify their place on the board?

As for Murphy? I think he's worth upwards of £2mil, and even when he isn't that prominent in a game, he manages to produce something that causes a threat, so all in all, we have a player who'll improve as we bring in better quality players. Replacing Murphy with a jobsworth really isn't worth discussing.
