Why? It is a legitimate and valid opinion, shared by many. I hear it expressed every time someone passes away in this manner, particularly public figures.

I wasn't aware it was as harsh as that. The second sentence was un-necessary. I suspect, however, that he was speaking from experience and from the heart. One things for sure, an apology at this stage would open up wounds, not heal them.

I suggest we cut out the self-indulgent indignation and let the matter, and the man, rest.

I don't agree, actually. It's a very complex, highly-sensitive issue. His opinion is a common one, though could have been better expressed in a different way.

It certainly wouldn't alter my [affirmative] view as to whether we should sign him if we had half a chance!

As a fellow professional footballer he shouldn't have expressed his opinion at all, because it was always likely to be republished and potentially read by someone who could find extremely hurtful. It isn't about his opinion, it is about the lack of class in expressing it at all! (... and that is the last I will say on the matter, as I do agree partially with what you say... some things are better left in the past!).

As to moving on, the sooner the better.

Putting aside the fact he had no idea of the circumstances surrounding the death, deleting his account following the response to that comment doesn't exactly seem uncowardly. Quite the opposite in fact.

That's correct danny, he shouldn't be pilloried for a display of immaturity. At that age life can seem black and white, and the nuanced stuff gets missed because it doesn't fit the very simple way life is meant to be lived. For what it's worth, my take is that Speed must have been deeply distressed, and when someone is that far gone all reason seems to have left them. It must be hell for his wife and kids, but where some things are concerned there are often no satisfactory answers.

Put it down to a lack of maturity danny, and if Dean should sign let's hope that we Blades can display that maturity and not knock the stuffing out of the guy.

sounds like Blackburn beck where we used to play sometimes, except that was rust coloured and stank. Think it was a stretch that fed into, rather than out of, Blackburn Meadows but not 100% sure. Guess I survived

I guess you must be a older Wincobank resident if you played near Blackburn Brook, we used to make money pushing cars out of the water when it flooded Fife St you had to be a bit wary crossing the train tracks though I guess the brook goes under Meadowhall now before going into the Don near the shit beds.

I'm guessing he was some way down the list if he only knew last week, probably sounded out last week when it was obvious Dean ( or whoever) wasn't coming and got a call Sat/Sunday after the game...im still hoping we've got another CB coming in...or that Kennedy makes s miraculous recovery...
