I'm pretty sure when James Beattie signed he had an Orange Lamborghini and no one seemed to have a problem with that?!

That is true. And lots of players at the time were pissed off at the fact he was earning £40k.

James Beattie can earn what he wants as far as I'm concerned. He can cup my balls if he wants to. I would gladly lick his back as a show of thanks whilst my wife files for divorce.

Only 4 men in the world can hold me to that. Beattie, Brian Deane, David Beckham and Brad Pitt.

Fuck, is it Tuesday night? Best put the beer down

He was lying about Collins that I'm sure about, so it won't surprise me if what people are saying is true about him. Still first season it looked like we got a real good manager on our books but things really did change in the second season.

One point re: Clough (& his brother) that he had a superb eye for a player, one of the best of any manager in the last 20 years.

There's always one or two signings who don't work, it's inevitable and part of football. However I fully expect plenty of Clough signings to kick on and develop as quality players at this level and above.
Perhaps he would be a better scout instead. I think he's great signing players but it seems like he doesn't quite know what to do with them once he's got them, at least from a tactical viewpoint.

The Maguire story is definitely true. Maguire under contract obligations was still expected to train with the team before officially signing . On arrival Clough told him in front of all the playing staff to "fuck off". The opening post is bang on. Sad but true I liked Clough when he first joined but that's a joke. Regarding Maguire signing for Hull who were in Europe wasn't a bad decision and in hindsight still one he should have gone for, it's a team where on good showing he could've made a claim for the first team not like joining Man City et.al

Imagine being able to combine North Korea, ISIS and LSD

then give them a keyboard.

Collins has been a habitual cunt ,Clough lied to make him not look a cunt. Clough comes out of it worst ,Collins will be a cunt again.

First season, I thought you are your father's son Nigel Second season Whose your father Nigel? You lost the plot signing anything on legs after you promised a small squad. You reminded me so much of Trevor the pig Francis. The story was, if your house came on the market, he would buy it, he bought everything else. A difficult task to follow Brian, you tried Nigel but, you have failed.

Haa Haa. Perhaps I'm more from the Clough management style than Adkins! Regards the other posters, if you want to play with the grown ups you have to play the grown up way. Mainly like children :)

Your second childhood then?

Perhaps you need reminding we are all on the same side:confused:. Why not give them the benefit of all your experience in constructive debate?;)

Interesting to hear from more than one poster that Clough's signings were so good.

Of course there are a few good players in amongst his recruits and so there should be on our budget. Brayford cost over £1.5m and Done cost around £700k. Adams is promising and so is Freeman. However there were numerous "duds" and we failed to utilise the loan system to good effect.

The fact remains that over a period of nearly two years Clough assembled an unbalanced squad, woefully short of central defenders and a desperately weak spine. We had any number of small, lightweight look-alike midfielders, we had ordinary keepers and we had hardly any 6 footers to defend set pieces. . For months last season we had to field players out of position to fill gaps and didn't have any strikers.

The job of the manager is to ask the Chief Scout to find suitable players to build a balanced squad. Nigel and Simon were nowhere near achieving that.

Because this is all a bit of fun and shouldnt be taken too seriously? Don't know about you but this is all light relief for me from the daily grind.

Oh dear we are back here again. Go on let it drop, I dare you.

You're on here all day and evening and reply to any post within minutes - not doing much other "daily grinding":)

Not sure some posters think you're fun either.

It would seem like some posters still can't come to terms with the fact Clough has gone, God knows why.
I was questioning the need to start a thread highlighting all Negative Nigel's failings until reading some of the pro Clough rubbish from the usual suspects who would probably clap eleven traffic cones if you put em in a Blades shirt. Does anyone still think Nigel would have lasted so long here or at Derby if his name hadn't been Clough ?

Care to expand?

It's doubtful that it's black and white. Collins probably pissed Clough off but for Clough to then jeopardise the prospects of the club as a whole by refusing to consider our one fit centre half for the biggest game of the season was ridiculous in the extreme.

I've never claimed to be ITK but the few snippets I've heard about Clough do not cover the man in glory. Being principled is admirable; being unwilling to change is not.

One full season and one part? Yes, based on his initial showing, I'd expect any manager to be given a full season after what he'd done.
Derby, you're probably right. True he worked with a low budget and improved them a little each season but, given the average tenure of a manager in the Championship, he did well to last as long as he did. Can't imagine someone like Ian Dowie lasting as long with the same performance as Clough.

Or they were one transfer window away.
Clough has his obvious faults but the players he recruited are generally decent, as we'll see this season. Of course, one can also argue that he's the first manager to be given serious backing since Blackwell. Wilson worked with his hands tied behind his back due to the massive wage bill he inherited. He signed a few duds, which may have been it was the best he could get for the money, but he also signed the likes of Murphy and Flynn.
With the benefit of hindsight, he'd have been a better option to re-build the team than Weir turned out to be.

The title of this thread would make a decent thriller title, just saying.

Unfortunately the "who did it?' question would be answered in the first 5 mins, they could embed a list of other things Clough did as well in the end credits though to keep the viewer hooked ;)

Ah!....but there could be at least one, if not two, subplots? Imagine Le Carre - a secret service division that infiltrates SUFC as they've been alerted to a soviet plot to use The Sty as their HQ, well at least I can imagine a commie porker.

But then predictably Clough would have to be outed as both a commi and porker followed in a bizarre twist the revelation that due to illegal research carried out by the Clough family during the war, Nigel is actually Hitler and behind the brutal killing of Cecil

<< On Collins They definitely did have a row and it was very personal. Clough did everything he could to get him out of the club including making him train alone, but Collins dug his heels in and rejected several permanent moves and pay-offs >>

im pretty sure the collins one is true i talked to a youth coach not long back and he said the exact same thing that clough secluded him from the rest and made him train alone .

I was told Collins didn't know why this happened

Collins must be a little bit thick if he genuinely doesn't know why he was told to train alone.
Rightly or wrongly, Clough had no intention of playing him and wanted him to leave and free up a large chunk of wages.
Obviously Collins didn't pick up on the subtle little hints like never being selected and offered a pay-off to move somewhere else?

Those criticising Clough for excluding Collins would be the first to slag him off for maintaining a "massively bloated" squad.
How else can a manager offload surplus players who refuse to leave than by making their working life a little less cushy?

Can I suggest one minor, but pertinent, plot twist? Warnock makes an appearance midway through, and in best Tom Cruise theatrics, tugs at his face mask to reveal that all along he has been Robert Mugabe? Where this fits in I'm not sure, but you're imaginative enough to find a way of weaving this into the plot.

I bloody knew that was a mask, no face could have that nose as a natural feature

Edit:

Apart from dick-nose from slipknot, that guys nose - totally real
