None of that seems improbable.

yeah from stories ive heard from friends & family who heard stories from tony currie & someone that i cant remember they sound very similar to what i heard that basically he went into like some weird dictator towards the end of 2nd year, they couldn't get rid of him quick enough after swindon. which could explain that awkward final radio sheffield interview.where he basically had a go at jonathan buchan.

i was thinking for the last week that neill collins saga was beginning of the end of clough, because i sensed more fans turning against him once he "lied" to us. because when we had no fit centre backs people were remembering mentioning neill collins & all of sudden he had recovered from injury & was back in light training how very convient that a guy has recovered from an injury just as people are asking where he was

Not sure what your agenda is here? A guy posts some stuff he's heard and you say he's making it up and spiteful?

Lets only post stuff that's 100% fact and in the public domain then and watch this board wither and die in a few days.
I wasn't aiming this at the one who made the thread. I was aiming it at the people who do come up with such entertaining stories about how evil the man Nigel Clough is.

It took them a while to get rid of him, letting him do his retained list was stupid too if they knew he was going.

Load of crap ,but even if it was true it just goes to prove that the majority of footballers are egotistical ,childish bellends. Maybe listening and doing what a manager requires might enhance their careers.

You're probably right about footballers, but even if these tales are only partially true they reflect on Clough as a manager out of synch with how modern clubs are run. They used to run a club top to bottom, especially if they were reasonably successful. Nigel probably reflected a lot of Brian in his approach and behaviour. But the world of football has changed since his father's day - even Ferguson had to win the FA Cup, a European trophy and the league before he established his power base at Old Trafford, and that was still dependent upon shareholder support.

Very astute and thoughtful points Sitwell. There is little doubt that the way to manage modern, highly paid "celebrity" players is to be in the middle of the group working amongst the squad rather than outside and above it. Times have changed and so have ways of managing in most walks of life.

It depends if that manager is Nigel Clough who doesn't know his arse from his elbow in most senses.

Clough is an absolute jebend. You can see that from a mile off.
None of this surprises me, and while I'm always tetchy about accepting the truth to these stories, these all seem totally believable.

One missing though. Anyone know what happened with Butler?

Koeman ought to have slogged him one.

Koemans issue was with Morgs, not Clough.

Yes great that a lad that came up through our academy and gave us 4 good years service before leaving for a very healthy fee gets treated like shit.

What was he supposed to do, stay here until he's 35?

Not letting him say good bye isn't smart, it is petty and vindictive. Clough's major failing was his 'I know best' streak and I've previously written about how Simon McCabe learned from Doyle how bad morale really was.

I like the bloke and wanted him to succeed but the more I hear about him, the happier I am he's gone. He gave us some good times in the cup and kept us up but he was not a good man manager. His dad could get away with it, he couldn't.

Onwards and upwards under the new regime!
If you believe all the stories, Maguire engineered the move by dreaming up sun stroke to avoid being selected. Given that he was a highly paid professional, that was a rubbish thing to do - and If I were Clough I'd have treated him the same.

None of these stories may be true, of course.

UTB

The "Harry at Shirecliffe" story is different every time I hear and and it always comes from a "good source"

No wonder Clough was annoyed with certain players if they were in the Copthorne gossiping the night before a game.

Fell out during pre season, Butler a bit of a tail. Butler goes to see Clough later to ask why he's not playing, Clough tells him because other players are in front of him. Butler scores against Mansfield, pumps fist at Clough, Butler's Sheffield United career over.

Allegedly.

Ps. Koeman should have shook his hand.

Seriously though, If he had won us a cup final and taken us up would anybody give a monkeys ?

And he could have......;)

Adkins will have the same problems ,when Collins and Diegos and McNultys dads let him know they are the actual managers of the club.
If I was Murphy or Done I would look at them and think I hope they get sold the big headed wankers.

No, but the point is, neither would the players. If my boss was, in my view, unreasonably strict, but made sure my career was a success, I would turn a blind eye to the treatment, or more likely, embrace it as an education (a la Brian Clough/Alex Ferguson). If my boss was unreasonably strict but was unable to back up his approach with some tangible success, I would be annoyed and feel some justification in questioning his approach.

Nope, but he didn't did he?

It's a fine line between hero and villain but Clough ultimately wan't successful and paid the price. Nobody would have given a shit about falling out with Collins etc if we'd gone up. Unfortunately a major part of the reason we didn't was he also fell out with Butler and so had to play our 'best' player out of position to make up for this.

Ultimately he was the architect of his own downfall and that's it.

Clearly the board felt otherwise, they sacked Clough and his entourage unless this a story made up by the players.

I too have met the couple who stop in the Copthorne regularly before matches. They seem very genuine and if that's what they have been told I believe them. Some players stay in the Copthorne before matches so it seems right what they say.

James Shield did indeed say the board felt Clough was too dictatorial, maybe he and the board made that up too.

Maybe the majority of forum posters are 'egotistical, childish bellends'. Perhaps not, maybe just some of them.....

Your brilliant. Players and former managers getting the treatment from a fan of the club. You dont usually believe this shit but because it suits your twisted agenda you will on this occasion.

I cannot wait until the season starts so we can read you insight into things. Who will you be calling names next? Will Adkins be a smelly pants? Morgan a stinky bum?

Will Adkins be a smelly pants? Morgan a stinky bum?

I dare you.

Sit in the South stand a couple of rows behind the dugout and wait until we're 1-0 down and the ref's wrongly sent one of ours off. Tell Mr Morgan how you consider his posterior to be non aromatic and then consider his witty response as you lie in the Northern General awaiting the seat removal surgeon to inspect your crack.

Twisted agenda? I forgot not liking someone was an agenda.
These 'stories' are all to frequent to not have some truth in them. Surely even someone as dense as yourself can see that.

Do you like everyone? Is there something wrong with you upstairs that means you only see good things in everybody?

Adkins pisses allover Clough in every sense. There'll be no name calling from anyone about Adkins, cos he's not a cock.

Tittle tattle at the table of a supporters "meet the manager" night, maybe with alcohol involved, is not really suitable information for a thread.

However there is little new in what is reported. Some posters on here saw it happening with their own eyes and said so on here for months. Not until towards the very end of last season were such critical comments accepted by many on here. The poll on here after Clough was sacked showed that 60% S2 Forum members thought he should have been given more time.

I think it was me who said some time ago that fans would not realise how bad the Clough regime was- man management, tactics, scouting etc - until a good new modern manager succeeded him. That is exactly what is happening now. The Board were getting all the flack until the JTW this year and only since then did fans start to question the Clough dynasty.

It really is hard to understand how much support Clough had for so long and even to this day. Tittle tattle adds nothing as the issues have been with us for over a year. Nobody should ever suggest that Blades fans are anything but loyal and Clough enjoyed extraordinary loyalty in his time here. It's easy for some fans to jump on the bandwagon now but it serves little purpose really unless things go wrong under Adkins and then the Board will get flack again for sacking Clough early.

There is a further angle on this though. Adkins is visibly delighted with the squad he has inherited so Clough and the Board deserve some credit for that.

Oh, and for the record, who are you to tell me who I can and can't call stinky pants?

Genuine question , when did Clough become the anti Christ after you originally anointed him "Mr Sheffield United" and welcomed the appointment of his brother as another brick in the wall of his dynasty?

Is that the same squad that he said weren't good enough to go up?
Doesn't sound like delight to me
