The Clough Regime

As you say, who knows where the truth lies, but I've also heard stories, some seem to reflect what you've written. I guess most managers and/or players have fall- outs. Alex Ferguson was notorious for getting rid of players he'd consider bad blood, so I guess it's something that happens in such a pressure cooker environment. I guess that when players feel they've been treated like adolescents it's not surprising they sometimes push back, thus increasing any hostility between both parties.

It could be that Clough was a disciplinarian and that some players had no respect for his approach, but who knows? What any of this proves I'm not sure, but what does matter is what Adkins is creating amongst his squad. Let's hope the coming months are gossip free and we begin to see the team make the type of inroads we all hope for.

the thing that always springs to mind is when I was growing up and backchatted my parents I was told off as "the parents are in charge of the kids, not the other way round" this is exactly the same with a football club (or any business), the manager is in charge, if you dont like the way he does things then you leave to go elsewhere... if you act like a petulent child then why be suprised when you are treated like one...

Not claiming to be ITK or anything but I'd heard from someone who got talking to an ex-player that works with the academy that Collins was a bad influence within the squad. I think he said the same of Doyle too. That might be complete bollocks but I think it's all too easy to take the anti-Clough line on it all.
I don't know what has gone on with the whole Collins saga but by the sounds of it they've both not come out of it very well which was to the detriment of our season last year.

Both Doyle and Collins are seasoned pros, limited players perhaps, but surely recognised as good pros throughout their careers. Anybody heard any hint of either of them causing any trouble with other managers all those years? Certainly they have been model pros in their time with us as far as I know. The last year seems to have been a strange environment for everybody.

Perhaps better phraseology would be "the parents are in charge of developing the kids". Certainly "backchatting" is frowned upon but modern kids are encouraged to have opinions and to question things they don't understand.

As for present day football, any manager who adopts old-fashioned autocratic management will be the exception not the rule. I can't think of one in fact. Times have changed, in particular the leadership of modern, highly paid footballers.

I thought Adams brought in Collins and Doyle because he thought they'd be a good influence. That said, and it may just be coincidence, we've been pretty crap for as long as they've been here.
I find it hard to believe Collins 'didn't know' what the problem was, he just wasn't telling, which is fair enough as its his business.
And there's nothing on that list in the OP that Bassett hadn't done. It's just that we didn't have the Internet and no-one cared anyway because he was doing well at the time.

Collins must be a little bit thick if he genuinely doesn't know why he was told to train alone.
Rightly or wrongly, Clough had no intention of playing him and wanted him to leave and free up a large chunk of wages.
Obviously Collins didn't pick up on the subtle little hints like never being selected and offered a pay-off to move somewhere else?

Those criticising Clough for excluding Collins would be the first to slag him off for maintaining a "massively bloated" squad.
How else can a manager offload surplus players who refuse to leave than by making their working life a little less cushy?

It was something that Kenny Jackett did very effectively when Wolves were down here slumming it in Division 3 with us - excluding Roger Johnson, Jamie O'Hara, etc. from the first team picture & having them train with the kids.

Clough was way off being perfect but the repeated beatings he gets with the Collins stick isn't gonna suddenly turn Neill Collins into a promotion-winning centre-half.

Interesting to hear from more than one poster that Clough's signings were so good.

Of course there are a few good players in amongst his recruits and so there should be on our budget. Brayford cost over £1.5m and Done cost around £700k. Adams is promising and so is Freeman. However there were numerous "duds" and we failed to utilise the loan system to good effect.

The fact remains that over a period of nearly two years Clough assembled an unbalanced squad, woefully short of central defenders and a desperately weak spine. We had any number of small, lightweight look-alike midfielders, we had ordinary keepers and we had hardly any 6 footers to defend set pieces. . For months last season we had to field players out of position to fill gaps and didn't have any strikers.

The job of the manager is to ask the Chief Scout to find suitable players to build a balanced squad. Nigel and Simon were nowhere near achieving that.

Clough does not work for SUFC . He got the sack . New man comes in to improve squad Clough assembled .

We are in better shape post Clough than pre Clough.

Clough is the past , we have to believe Adkins is the future . Lets us just get on with it.

Pretty sure Doyle had some big argument with Page although he wasn't manager. I know he was a bit of a t*** to someone in Copthorne because there was sweetcorn in his sandwich but those are the only bad things I have heard about him.

Yeah, but KJ also brought in defenders to cover the positions that were exposed by alienating bad influences. Oh and he played 442.

I had heard a couple of bad bits about Doyle, but it mainly came from how he handed his responsibility as club captain, although it may be associated with him pulling rank with certain underperforming individuals with over inflated opinions of themselves. Think Brandy was one of the players in question

There usually is when you order tuna and sweetcorn sandwich . Clough may well have been dealing with a kindergarten.

I read through about 5 pages of this thread before deciding that's enough. My thought's are that we should all agree Clough was a bit of a #@×# and move on. No need to stoke old coals. Let's focus on the season ahead and start being positive again.

Far too sensible for this time of night !

Here we go again

A couple of pre-season wins and it's

Clough saved Derby/Blades from certain relegation.
Clough left Derby/McClaren with a balanced promotion Championship squad.
Clough left Blades/Adkins with a balanced promotion L1 squad

S./N. Clough signed amazing fantastic players never a bad signing, everyone one worth more then we paid for them .

Everything was laid on a table for next incumbent.
All SM and NA had to do was turn up for work.

Promotion is nailed on or
...........it's all Collins/Maguire's fault!

I would say some of the most successful managers (even modern day) are autocratic, Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourhino, all famed for telling players its their way or the highway.... why do you think you get so many players demanding transfers... it's because they dont like what the manager is saying... the club hasnt sacked the manager, they have sold the player... (yes these are at the higher echilons of the spectrum but it shows it still exists)

in regards to the kids, parents that allow kids to have "free reign" without recourse far from being valuable members of society. boundaries are key within development, if a kid is allowed to be shown that "doing what they want when they want" is acceptable, when they go into a working environment and do the same a boss will simply get rid. as he cannot be seen (regardless of talent) to be pandering to the needs of one as this would affect the moral of all others in the workforce. and whereas an opinion and questions is usually encouraged a "but why" scenario isnt, and thus the parents decisions are final. as is a managers... after all they are the ones who are judged.... it was rarely x didnt play well and thats why we lost, it was more why did clough play x in the first place....

That's a much better post!! Still a bit skewed but more relevant.

I don't give a shit about Derby so I have removed their reference from your burst. Anyone saying Clough didn't save us from relegation is talking out his fuck hole. He got us from spiralling out of control to 7th that season. Clough and the players he brought in.

Fact is he left Adkins with whatever it is he has left him. Clough did sign some decent players but obviously not enough of them otherwise we wouldn't be having this chat. He got fired but for people like you that isn't enough. You are determined to undermine just about anything he ever did.

We have a new manager now, I'm sure you noticed. He doesn't drown kittens or round people up to send them for a "shower" like the previous bloke clearly did. Be nice if we moved along and just enjoyed the fact there is a new season coming.
