No doubt Pinchy will come up with a funny nickname for him in coming days like Elpiton. My sides have never recovered from that one.

Despite misgivings I've made it clear I support the signing of Sharp, not least tonight. I hope you extend the same to Connor Sammon?

The Elpiton nickname fitted Quinn perfectly at the time. That was his one and only function under the odious SemiPro. Quinn himself said as much publicly, to his credit.

He's been on decline for years is a fact based on the last few years and his record over that time - lets hope he can turn it around.

And therein lies the rub. It's not a 'fact' at all and there's no guarantee he has to turn anything around.

I forget who put up a good post in this thread a day or so ago, but the circumstances of his most recent contracts may have dictated his performance.

I'm not saying he's not gone in the wrong direction career wise, but I'd definitely hope for some pragmatism when it comes to his career. The last time he played in a good side at this level, he scored by the bucketload; he's not had the stars align in such a manner since, but has invariably still scored goals.

He's now back at a level that suits him, with a manager who knows him and at a club he loves. To me, that's a good mix... so long as he stays onside more than last time he was at the club ;)

You scapegoated the life out of Quinn at that time... well, when Monty wasn't playing anyway.

And yes, I have high hopes for Sammon... despite the views of Derby fans. The fact that they say he works his bollocks off to unsettle opposition defenders excites me as I think it will open space for Sharp.

I said Quinn was crap when he was indeed crap. He went on record to say his game went backwards under hoofers Semipro and Quickfix.

As for Monty, no scapegoat there - just a shadow-chasing non-footballer.

His game didn't go backwards, he was simply bypassed for the most part. And I'd be shocked if he went on record to say his game went backwards under former managers!

This might work. He's been playing at Championship level for the last 7 seasons or so. He should still be plenty good enough for L1.

140 league goals aged 29 is not to be sniffed at.

It will depend on a vast improvement in attacking intent and delivery.

Fix the back 4 now and we might have a side again.

Be shocked. He was quoted on both RS and The Star. It was documented on here at the time. Quite unlike the ludicrous Frank Lampard - Monty fabrication.

Awesome signing. He's a goalscorer. While other forums groan in jealousy, ours grroan in indifference. Good. Prove em wrong Billy.

Just those centre backs now but these are brilliant signings for the club. Started off not really wanting Billy but I have really come round since. Sammon I can see bagging 20+ goals in this league as well. Add Done and McNulty to those two and we have a strike force that can easily provide the goals for promotion.

It really is. Looking at his goals to games ratio, his record as a goalscorer has been declining.

Amen, here's hoping he bangs in 30 goals for the next two seasons and fires us to the premiership.
Also hoping he plays well, stays longer than those 3 seasons and earns his tag as a Blade legend.

Pleased with the Sharp signing, I'm sure he'll feel he has something to prove and I think Adkins will ensure we play to his strengths, which I don't think was the case during his previous two spells.

Not sure what to think about Connor Sammon, certainly didn't see that coming. I wonder if Adkins stumbled across his agents phone number when he was clearing Cloughs desk out? :)

Well I really hope he does well and smashes bucket loads of goals in. It will be a fairytale for a simple minded fella like me after 2 failed attempts. Good luck to Billy 'fat lad from sheffield' Sharp, 3rd time lucky, UTB!!!!!!!!

Sorry Bob, that's bull and the kind of semantics Pinchy would be proud of!

When you say 'player is declining', you don't mean 'a player's record is declining', you mean his ability.

In this case, Billy MAY have declined as a goalscorer because he's been faced with harder opposition, or not been played in the right way. It doesn't necessarily mean he's declined as a player. Don't get me wrong, he MAY have, but it's certainly not the fact you would have it as from earlier in the thread.

Was he wholly commited the last two times he didnt let the door hit his fat arse on the way out ?
And score twice against us in relegation season at the lane, behaving like a proper twat in front of our fans after his goals
Take something fucking special for me to forgive that.

I honestly think some of us are still struggling to align our expectations in the transfer market to where we currently find ourselves. Granted, we'll always be a big attraction in league one when compared against the rest of the clubs in the division, but we're still in league one all the same.

Putting Billy's previous spells to one side, he's a striker that has a good goal scoring ratio and has succeeded in this division before under the same manager. He's played plenty of football at the division above, granted with varied success, but in terms of 'proven' players, he's probably as proven as anyone we could expect to sign.

I'm also not sure what relevance his previous spells with us have. Different manager, different coaches, different team mates....his previous spells with us can't be used as an indicator as to how he will do this time.

Re: Sammon, I have to say I've only seen him a couple of times. Hopefully at league one level he will be more of a goal threat than he has been in divisions higher but he appears to be more of a foil to the main man at top rather than the man you expect to get the goals. Again, as a league one club, signing players that are capped at international level and have played a lot of football at a higher level shouldn't be sniffed at. Whether he is a success with us or not is another matter of course and time will tell, but I don't think the club or Adkins can be criticised for these signings.
