Unconvincing 1-0 win by all accounts, although the 1st friendly,Lewin got the goal.
Che missed a couple of good chances,JCR and Wallace played well, the rest pretty average really.

Unconvincing as in 23 players got a great work out against a decent Ilkeston higdon should have got two Adams should have had two . Top players for me today was first half was Collins j cr Second half Baxter making look easy ,Adams he has got to be a starter and mc faz ,think the under 21s second half did better than the more experienced first half player s ,unconvincing Jesus give me strength .# cluelessfans

I didn't go,that was the report from my sister :)

Wasn't perfect as you'd expect from first game on the season. But We played well in patches, and looked brighter in the second half.

Positives:

Lovely Weather.
Wallace and basham in the middle on the first half.
Diego looked v sharp in the second half, beating his man and putting a couple of through ball on a plate which should have been finished.
Baxter played well too I thought, looks much fitter than last season imo.

No real negatives and something to build on.

Harry McGuire was in attendance too.

Considering the level of negativity directed against Higdon, I would be interested in any first hand observations?

He put himself about about. Went close with a header he possible could have scored. He wasn't terrible by any stretch but equally I didn't see anything that suggested he'd be someone to build the forward line around this season. Ddg and mcnulty caused more of a threat and obviously both more mobile.

How did Collins play?

How was Diego's return? Saw him up at York a few months back and looked creative in bursts but his lazy bastardicity was a negative factor.

What formation did we play? 4-4-2 both halves?
What style did we play? Direct? Passing? Mixed?
Who were the centre backs in the second half team?
Who played wide?
Thanks in advance, SB

Both him and McEverley looked very assured to me, but then again it's not easy to tell against non league opposition.

If we start the season thinking Collins and Mceverley are good enough for even L1 then we will be in the same position as we were come October time last season - chasing down the early pace setters in the league.

We have seen how good or not good they are at this level.

If we make the same mistakes as last season - then we deserve to be exactly where we will be NEXT season - League One.

The problems last season were obvious to everyone - if we do not rectify a simple problem of having 2 decent, strong and commanding centre halves and a defence that picks itself then we might as well pack in before we start.

Better than the 0-4 loss to Burton Albion last year I take it.
that's what I thought. Might be wrong but I also wondered if last year's pre-season was a bit of a predictor for the season. Turned over against the so called lower sides (Burton, York), more up for it against the bigger ones (Dundee, Fenerbace)

Yeah, a 442. Sparky and higdon first half and dcl and ddg in second. We mixed it up to be fair, few long balls trying to get it forward in the first half to higdon. But the pitch was pretty slow and not really conducive to nice football.

Wallace, basham and Baxter tried to spread it out when they could and Wallace in particular looked to break forward when he could - can't remember last midfielder we had who could do that. Couple of nice bits of interplay in the second when we had more pace about us. Although the illkeston side had about 8 trialists on then.

K. Wallace and Harrison centre backs I think I second half. Not really troubled.

Wide players were Murphy and jcr I 1st half. Didn't get a huge amount of joy. Scougs (who I think Is better in the middle) and Adams in second

I was stood the other side of the pitch and thought we played three at the back in the second half. Any one confirm this, I didn't know who was playing right back, I did assume it was Wallace as only seen him a couple of times so didn't recognise him.
