Was coming out of Sheffield yesterday and heard the radio football show. You can tell by my name I'm a Baggie, So, here's my question. Both Wilson and Clough Got you so close to promotion. That given another season both would have a decent chance to get you back in the Championship if allowed to carry on building. Yet in both cases the reset button was pushed. Listening to the show it sounded like the new guy will get a season Though I could be mistaken. If that is the case your board has turned the job into a bit of a poison chalice. The Question then why were Wilson and Clough sacked when so close to promotion?

There's 'so close' and there's 'so close'.

Wilson was sacked by a panicking Chairman with a few games to go before the end of the season so it wasn't necessarily because of failure. Clough took us close, yes, but given the squad and resources, should have challenged for autos so in his case, 'so close' wasn't deemed good enough.

We weren't close to promotion with either Clough or Wilson. Wilson had a 'bits and bobs' side which at one time had a jailed rapist who scored quite a few goals once he'd found his level. Once the old bill felt his collar and he went to the big house, then you could shine a fucking torch right through the team to see how shit we actually were. See Sheff Utd vs a very average Huddersfield Town in the 2012 PO final. Oh, and the other goal scorer we looked like getting somewhere with was flogged to Reading, apropos of fuck all. Some say McCabe our chairman simply doesn't want the club to be promoted because the fans might want more from him and the board. When they sold Blackman, it was hard to dispute that.

Clough (I feel) took his time to come to Bramall Lane because (I feel again) he was looking at the heads that rolled before him, and the abject mess the playing staff were in with no real talent or playing style and extracted some promises from the board. That (I feel) involved the term 'so how much can I spend and can I spend it on who I want?' to which the answer was (probably) 'millions and yes', with their fingers crossed behind their backs. The big thing was this Saudi Prince and you know what overseas investors can bring in terms of financial clout and playing ability. But I think that wasn't the case. I think us Blades all can see what a fired up club Sheffield United can be under Clough - we went to the semis last year and this and fought relegation worries. But when your bike is made from monkey-metal, don't be surprised if the fucker gives way underneath you over the bumps. And looking at the home defeats we have seen in the run ups to the playoffs (which to me were never a fucking ambition although some were happy we were there as if we'd achieved something wonderful) it is clear that the promises to Clough to get the squad playing like a Championship side with Championship-ready players was nothing but billy-bollocks. Clough made mistakes but (I feel) he was told to buy within a budget and simply bought shit, non-Div 1 players, who couldn't even beat a relegated Yeovil Town and handed the playoffs to a provenly weak Swindon Town, this after making Spurs and Southampton look like dogshit at Bramall Lane.

So no ... we weren't ready for promotion in either case. To be ready for promotion you have to have good players ready to play in the league above and act like a club that retains that talent, not sell it to Hull City and do fuck all with the proceeds or promise the fans that our poverty-days are over, squandering cash on shit managerial appointments, wasting cash on off field idiocy and making Game Changing Investment announcements that simply are not true. We have a weak side, weakened by not hanging on to good players and not bringing in good players. Moruinho or Guardiola could manage United tomorrow and we'd still end up getting goosefatted by the lesser teams because of this.

Because we weren't as nearly as lose to promotion as it would first seem.

The answer is that if you were a blade and had to watch the awful negative tactics at home to teams
such as Crewe and Fleetwood, you would be happy that he's gone. I do agree with you on Wilson though.

Biggest club in the league , biggest budget in the league, biggest transfer fee paid in the league, biggest crowds in the league (by miles).

4 wins in the last 17 games and playing those mainly with 4 full-backs in defence because despite all the above we had no centre-backs in the club. Add to that a safety-first dour approach to games and you can sort of see why the board when enquiring what was going to change and being told nothing, same approach decided a change was needed.

I'm sure the club will be inundated with applications for the job of manager. Some will be surprising and others possibly no serious contenders. For a manager it could be an amazing opportunity to 'do' something, given the right support from the owners. So I'm not concerned about who, what I would like to know is what really happened over the weekend to change things? Also why release the news on a bank holiday? Strange.

Either way I'll be in my usual seat next season, full of hope and anticipation.

I can sympathise too some extent but Clough had a great win ratio with you 60% and a really good cup run as you yourself say beat both Saints and Spurs. Taking you from relegation zone to play off. If given another year What's there to say he wouldn't have improved it to take you up. The reset button been pressed though so whoever comes in will have to spend on their own players. From the radio He was allowed to compile your retained list, Why? You've sacked him 2 weeks too late. Also with his record from the past 18 months. Who's going to want to come? That is a record and a half. Sacking somebody with a 33% record can be seen as harsh. Clough was double that! Anyone decent isn't going to take the risk. It's always the fans that get crapped on, but, the club is a Basketcase

The size of the club, coupled with huge resources and expectation, add in the fact that we played with no CB's for half the season
and also the fact that he is willing to put his pride over success with refusing to play Collins in the play offs as he'd had a
fall out with him. Then to top it off not admitting a single mistake all season.

Think that is why the board rightly sacked him in my opinion.

One report says they were Clough was asked to change his style of play as it was seen as a negative style, he refused, so they went "bye".

Never got why Wilson was sacked though

The Wilson sacking was a desperate gamble by the board hoping for a new manager bounce. There was very little chance of us going up the season he was sacked. The goals had dried up and he was a dead man walking.

Had he stayed and been given the prince's money after the takeover though, I think he'd have got us out of the division, but the takeover was four months away at the time of the sacking. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

there you have it. not being from the city you wouldn't be aware that we have a long running feud with said radio show.. plus you are making an assumption.. that they year after we would have had a decent chance.. some of us wouldn't agree with you.. we watch this shit week in week out. there was 0 progress last season

That win ratio was declining rapidly and was as high as it was because of the amazing run the previous season. This season wasn't close to that, and like I said 4 wins from the last 17 gives a more accurate picture of where the team was form-wise, far from improving the 60% ratio the likelihood was that it would drop further. The cup runs were the ultimate smokescreen, showing a dynamic attacking team capable of living with the best, only to be followed by a home defeat to Fleetwood with the manager sending them out petrified of the opposition. How does that work, beat one of the teams of the season in Southampton and then be scared of playing Fleetwood at home? The retained list is a bit of a misnomer, all on that list would leave anyway and all a new manager would want to do is add to the list rather than take any back. Why the late decision on sacking? See my post earlier, because it appears the board called him in and demanded a more attacking approach and a broader throw of the recruitment net (beyond Derby, Blackpool and Scotland), to be told things would carry on as before.

That's as bigger exaggeration as the 60%.........:)

If you look at the team as it now stands it's wide open for the next manager to bring in his own players into key positions, let's pray we get some one who knows how to do it...

Clough was not close to promotion.

Wilson did have a second chance I believe and struggled.

Clough was given enough resources this season to get us promoted but spent too much time falling out with the players he signed. The board probably expected a manager of Clough's calibre to go looking further than Ex-Derby players in the transfer market and to play a better style of football.

You obviously haven't seen much of us last season we can count good displays on the fingers of one hand, says it all when the cleaners went round the stands after the games waking people up to go home.
