There was one top spot. We won the fourth division title.

Now we only need to win this league and we will have the complete set!

over the past 40 years we average out as 29th out of 92 aided by the 6th and 9th , otherwise wed be nearer to being around 33rd
so we are officially a mid table championship team , by right

We have not been a good top flight club since 1934. We have flirted occasionally with being one but haven't more than the odd good season since.

Never mind that, why don't you tell us some more about Wednesday.

Good post Below good to see that someone has spent time researching, goes to show how fortunes have changed, shame some other forum members don't read it for what it is, our history.

I am content to be an established 2nd tier side who occasionally spends the odd season or two in the top division.

Not content in the third tier though and surely no one is?

Someone did a similar piece in Flashing Blade this season, successive boards should hang their heads in shame at what they have done to SUFC over the last 40 years. If there is any pretence at being a big club it is down to Blades fans only.

Fourth rate board, first class fans.

Were has 40 years gone . History of the blades and no further forward . SUFC is more or less a registrar of the crimes , follies , and misfortune of past chairman . But with it being the blades , for all of us , in different ways different years ,different games , different players , it does illuminate , and vitalises the memory .

Thats why its important that Prince , McCabe and Clough get it right for us . For the next generation thinking back another 40 years from now.

I'm guessing you're either quite young, don't know much about United's history or think United haven't the potential to be a top flight club?

For me, while ever United aren't a solid established top flight club, we're under achieving.

I started going in 1982, does that make me young at 41? In that time I have seen us in the top flight for five seasons. The third division now a total seven seasons next year, the rest have always been second tier to me it's our natural home.

Yes it does make you quite young. I'm 53 but know enough and remember enough to know the second tier is not our natural level.

If you polled fans of every club to ask what they think is the natural level for their club, you would probably get about 35 saying the top tier. Unfortunately, there are probably significantly more than 20 clubs with more of an argument for the top tier beginning their natural level than we do. Its hard to argue that we're anything other than a natural 2nd tier club.

Which 20 clubs? Because according to stats I've read, we're in the top 20 for 'seasons spent in the top flight'. Surely that's the best indicator for who belongs there more?

FACTS ARE FACTS
we cant change history ,
my concern is some people think one five seasons at the top out of 40 , 4 of which weve struggled big time, some in here believe we are a top league club and compare everything to that last season in the sun
the reality is we average being a mid table championship team,
in the past 4 years weve averaged 5th in league one so are half a division below our average, not 2 divisions as some constantly put, one failed season in the top in the past 20 years is not our level

this is just honesty , not knocking us , its a fact
to continually beat the current set up by saying we are supposed to be a top league set up is a bogus argument
yes, we all want to get back there, asap , but our starting point is 5th in league one ,,,, not 5 minutes after wed beaten west ham 3-0 in the prem and looked safe , that was one moment in the past 40 years

Think most blades I know think we are a top 25 club which could go higher with a push in the right direction

The last time we had that we averaged crowds of 30000 with the home ends sold out which (I think ) made us the 8 th best supported club in the land

Bit more ambition and a bigger wage bill then and who knows ...

Thats why it hurts to hear you constantly blaming us the fans for our shipwreck of a club , when we have been let down so many times and keep coming back

I don't know why you bother with him mate, he changes his argument for than my wife does.

I blame blade too long for our current predicament.

If memory serves, he came on this board in 2011 predicting we'd stay up. We didn't.

Every season since he's predicted we'll go up. We didn't.

He's just heightening everyone's expectations.

And when he's wrong, we all get upset.

And as we know, when we are upset, we start booing.

And as we know, booing makes the players cry and play rubbish.

That's why we don't get promoted.

So blt, it's all your fault. So there.

And on a more serious note, your attempt to sugar coat what is unarguably the second worst spell in the clubs 125+ year history is pathetic.

Which 20 clubs? Because according to stats I've read, we're in the top 20 for 'seasons spent in the top flight'. Surely that's the best indicator for who belongs there more?

Yes and no. We've had 60 seasons in the top flight. 37 of them were before 1934, so we have had only 23 seasons in the top flight out of the last 75 (counting next season).

Of those 23 seasons, 18 of them were in the period 1946-76, so that's 5 seasons in the top flight out of the last 40.

In other words, you would have to be around 90 to remember a time when United were top flight regulars. It's perfectly correct that since WWII our "natural" position has been the top half of the second tier.

It's also worth pointing out that in those last 75 seasons we have only finished in the top 10 in the first tier on 8 occasions (1947, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1967, 1972, 1975 and 1992).

Ah, heady days.

I dont blame fans for our short comings , just some fan s inflated view of our status, and expectation being over egged
they see us in the prem for 5 minutes and think its where we are
yes its where we all think we should be
but its not been where we have been , we are not and have not been good enough
we undoubtedly have the fan base, but sadly that can only drive us so far

we have had some desperate bad luck, and the play offs have been awful to us
had it been straight promotion wed have had much longer in higher leagues

we can criticise each regime for its failings ,but my concern is every new regime gets heaped with every others past failures,
our future will soon be our past , and we must make sure we all pull together to make us be able to look back at the next decade history with a smile
blame, cynicism , negative outlooks have overtook hope and expectation
If it is or isnt Clough ,the futures for us to help shape , we support Sheffield United fc ,
Start off with realistic expectation and show a bit of faith in the club,is really all any fan can do to help
We need some tweeking to move up 3 or 4 places, 2nd will do fine , its how our history shows us we get up
we wont get 110 points

We have a decent fan base when you consider the 92 but our pricing is quite low and thus we don't necessarily receive the gate income of some of the clubs of a comparable size.

Also, our crowds are poor compared to most PL regulars.

We are one of about 20 clubs that could theoretically survive in the PL.
