Chelsea to steal Mellis

Chelsea are raiding Sheffield United for whizkid Jacob Mellis.

The Daily Mail says Mellis was being lined up as a future star by Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez after he shone against the Anfield youngsters in the FA Youth Cup this season.

But Chelsea have made a move to snap up the 16-year-old before he can complete his switch to Merseyside. Mellis has not signed a professional contract at Bramall Lane but Sheffield United would be due a compensation package.

the likelyness (sp) is that he will just get cast aside in a few years time and end up at a lower league club but can you really blame the guy for wanting to move to a club like Chelsea? Don't think anyone can or should.

Hope he doesn't get cast aside and end up like most other promising youngsters these days after taking a move to a bigger club.

There were rumours around Chelsea recently that the club wasn't too happy with the lack of young talent coming through the ranks, rather millions being spent to bring youngsters in like Jon Obi Mikel etc leading to Ruud Kaiser, the youth team coach being sacked.

I suppose as a young player, his thinking must be that if he gets experience at Chelsea, then anyone will have him... whether he gets the chance there or not.

Chelsea have poached quite a few youngsters since Abramovich took control but as of yet not a single one has made an impact on the first team.

I hope that we aren't looking back in a few years time with Billy Sharp and Jacob Mellis both in the England team...

Im not saying he should have gone, staying at united would have probably helped him with his career alot better than going to a high profile club.

I don't think there's even been a single youth team member come through into the Chelsea first team since Abramovich came in. They hark on about how much they want to bring lots of homegrown English players from the youth team into the first team when they suddenly go out and buy SWP's for £20m - £30m who not only stop the young players getting near the first team, but who also warm the bench.

He may be better off at chelsea in coaching terms and pay, and perhaps longer term prospects in regards to going to another higher profile team after. But the only thing staying did for him was getting an easier chance to be in the first team.

yeh, alot of young players are considered "hot prospects" for the future but then turn into a waste of money, he might aswell get the most out of it while he can. He might think like that too, he doesn't know how long or how well his career will go.

It is more likely he will have a more secure future going to Chelsea though. So who can blame the lad for wanting to be more financially secure?

There is no guarantee he will be playing in front of any amount of people had he stayed at the lane.

So it's either go to Chelsea where he could be spotted easier by another team and earn more money and possibly also get in to the chelsea first XI. Or stay with united and earn less and playing for a place in a team that he doesnt know if he will ever get the chance.

I'll put it this way, if some one offered me an extra 8k a week extra to go do the same job, but with a less chance of promotion. I know exactly where i would be going (and yes i do realise he won't be on 10k a week)

i think some of it does, if he was a blade he would want to stay at the lane because his heart is here.

Seems like he has signed, as it's on the chelsea official site...They have also stolen (sorry, signed! 16 year old Danny Philliskirk from Oldham as well...

I think that you would have to question what these signings..and the many, many others when big clubs take youngsters from smaller clubs does for the future of English football...

Surely, he would have been better off here, working his way through the club, for an earlier route into league football?...

He is now more likely to be lost in "the system"...

I can only think of John Terry, who has come through at Chelsea and fulfilled his potential...and alot of that was due to him being loaned out to Nottingham Forest by Vialli, when his old mate David Platt needed a big, quick centre back to get him out of the mire...

Other than Terry, Chesea do not have much of a reputation for bringing through many quality players in recent years?...I stand corrected if anyone can think of any others?..
