Was thinking the same. Law of averages and all that say that one day we're going to make a final and then who knows?
Quite fancy Liverpool in the semi myself, I think we'd have a real chance of making the final and then it's a one off game against probably premier opposition and we've proved we can give anybody a game.
Think I'd like to avoid Bournemouth in the semi as well, strangely I think we'd have more chance of reaching the final if we do.

Mine too and I have less expectation now than in any of the previous ones.
Between 1961 and 1992, we spent 14 seasons in the top league and reached 1 x semi-final
Between 1993 and 2014, we spent 3 seasons in the top league and reached 5 x semi-finals, including 2 in 9 months where we were in League 1.
I'm not sure whether that's some kind of record, but if you throw in the fact we've lost them all, it's a pretty bizarre list.
Because those appearances have been heavily skewed to the last 20 years, both the Trig Jnrs were around for five of them and they're less than half my age. In one sense, I'm glad for them, they've had sporadic excitement, but they've also seen us at some of the lowest points in the club's history and we've always ended with glorious failure. They've certainly never been accused of being glory hunters

I'd fancy Spurs. Poor at home and we all know what we can do when the the Lane's a-rockin (Bramall, not White Heart). The fact it's two-legs reduces our chances somewhat tho. On a one off game we can surprise a team like we did last night, but over two you'd expect Premiership opposition to turn up at some point.

You're right of course and the one I missed was Hull City, even though I referred to it and that makes the skew even more pronounced 1 v 6.Just looking at the statistics, the 1961 FA Cup semi-final was our first since 1936, which amounts to a gap of 19 seasons, with WWII in the middle. Then there's a gap of 32 seasons until 1993, since when we've had a real avalanche of FA Cup semis, four in 21 years.

Think it shows that the big clubs take the cups less seriously these days hence clubs like United have more chance of progressing....

It'll be our 7th game in 6 semis. We did beat Liverpool at the Lane and they needed extra time at Anfield to beat us.
We've lost them all narrowly and probably put up the best fight of all last season.
Sadly, the Law of Averages doesn't exist but we can still dream. Great game last night, is it possible we can go one step further ?

Whilst that's true, our recent record is still very impressive, I don't think there's any other non-prem team that has been to so many recent semis
Chelsea,Liverpool,Tottenham and Newcastle all still left in and are all big clubs,with the other big club Sheffield United

Possibly but there was lots of chat on the radio last night and today that the "lesser" prem clubs should take this seriously as they could actually win something, the exception being Chelsea under Jose who seem to take it seriously anyway. Also, apparently Southampton's staff tried to tell their foreign contingent how important cups are in England but they "didn't listen".

It's quite staggering when you think about the amount of 'big event' games we've been involved in recently. In the past 20 years or so we've had 6 cup semi finals and 4 play off finals. Quite remarkable really. We have been quite lucky in seeing our team in so many big games, even though we never seem to win it's still an incredible achievement!

Not at all. but I don;t think the advance of clubs like United in the cups (and Bradford, Millwall, Cardiff and so on getting to finals) is unconnected with the PL/money obsession amongst the top clubs

Yes,you're right,i was merely pointing out that there are still big clubs left in,but what you say is propably correct and more down to the so called big clubs having better reserve players than most clubs first xi.

Their most recent final was in 2009 when they lost on penalties to Manchester United after a 0-0 draw.
