Credit where credit's due

I have certainly been one of those critical of Clough's tactics

Amazing what can be achieved when you drop the teachers pet and play what I would call a decent striker

Absolutely fantastic performance from the whole team, but I would like to particularly single out a young looking 17 year old in the middle of the park playing against premier league players and not looking out of place. Add to that an unphased 18 year old in Che Adams who showed some neat touches when thrown into the Lions den for the first time tonight

Well done Clough and the Blades :)

No. But I'll tell you what I'm angry about is the BBC sports coverage this morning. All about bloody Chelsea.

I just hope Clough is given the time to move us on up the leagues. I would rather go up with a decent chance of staying there instead of slipping back down with an inadequate squad. We still have an excellent chance of going up this season despite what some say but in the meantime two semi finals in one year is more than most fans can hope for especially by a third tier side. We have a good young team that can only get better. In my view we are light years away from when Clough took over. If two semi finals and the top end of the table don't please people than we might as well give up.

If we're not good enough this season it's no big deal, but Clough deserves a fair crack at sorting this club out.

If he can't do it I reckon nobody can.

The result last night was not only the positive outcome with how we played . Mr Clough and players post match interviews after the game were all very humble and levelled headed . It is now evident that we have players who are gelling together and can play different tactical formations to suit the opposition.

Mr Clough and his back-room staff do tend to get excited with frustration ( as witnessed at Fleetwood ) , when the players do not carryout or respond to touchline instructions . We are getting there with everything to play for in the league . The good thing is that Mr Clough does not see cup games as a distraction , but a form of positive motivation . It worked wonders for the second part of last season and see no reason why the same formula will not work this season.

As you say the match and post match handling of the situation was impeccable.

Or that when all the little tinpot teams play us in the league, they all raise their games considerably as they are playing SUFC. Just as we did last night playing Southampton

No, I think it's evidence that League 1 opposition are tougher to play football against than Premier League opposition. If everybody came to Bramall Lane and set up like t'Saints did, we'd boss games. As it stands, the best route to getting the better of us is to harass, press and out-muscle us. That pisses me off, but not the effort of our players. They probably thought last night that the longer the game went on, the better chance they'd have of us running out of steam but on this season's evidence, we weren't going to. Fit as butchers' dogs. Thank you Nigel.

If we are so fit why haven't we put in one single 90 minute performace in the league but can manage it easily in the cup ?

And if premier league teams are so easy to play against then I can't understand why more teams don't do it

Anyway don't want to piss on anyone's bonfire but I'm a bit worried about this
one glimmer of light it of all this is that maybe just maybe Cloughs record in cup games might give cause for optimism in the play off

No. I'm glad we don't bottle games like this. It also proves once again that if teams come and attack us then we get to play to our strengths. We looked extremely organised and McNulty would never have that amount of space in League one. We played with one striker like we've done most of the season and when we play a side that doesn't have 11 men behind the ball we can be patient and exploit sides. Im surprised that having matched, bettered so many sides from divisions above us in the last year that they've not cottoned on to our tactics and looked to beat us or make us struggle like league one sides do!

Physically we didn't get bullied, and our tiny midfield were busy throughout. Again, in league one we'd probably get roughed up a lot more. Despite the ref being very lenient towards Southampton, I don't think the ref was biased against us as he gave the decisions, he just didn't flash the cards to them consistently.

I think the problem is that sides in l1 put us under pressure like we did to saints last night. We're a very fit side and that showed last night against the pampered Premier league stars. But when we play league one sides we are up against physical and very fit sides too. Plus we don't get the space and time on the ball.

The other thing is that in league one games we get a lot of late goals, which could also be attributed, in part at least, to good levels of fitness

I'm not sure it's fitness that you're concerned with then, but concentration - that would be a fairer complaint.

Different styles of football in different leagues. It's why cup upsets are so prevalent and maybe it's why some promoted clubs do really well in the first few weeks of the Premier League...

If it has the same impact on the league as it did last year, I'll not be worried. Please remember where we were last Christmas.
 
Why does it take Prem opposition to make them perform like a team with fire in their bellys?

Is it precisely this 'desire to beat the best opposition for miles' that makes seemingly dour teams in our league play out of THEIR skins when they come up against what is the 'best opposition for miles' in their own league = SUFC ?

Simply a reversal of the same phenomenon?

Might be a while next time I'm in Sheff though. Ken jnr has season ticket as he is in his final year at Leeds univ but I struggle to get up there so frequently

No probs mate, I was struggling to get the Internet, 3G was shite and I couldn't pick up the wifi. But yeah you should've used the traditional method of talking ;)
 
What we have learned is that when the chips are down then there's a bloody good side at Bramall Lane.

It would be ludicrously unfair to expect that level of performance every game for a whole myriad of reasons. Not saying its right but i can appreciate that the 11 selected might not have as much enthusiasm for Fleetwood Town as they do Southampton. Its no different to the attitudes on the terraces.

It confirmed to me that come the end of the season when results really start to matter that there isn't a team in league one who could cope with us.

The cup run was a catalyst for league form last season. I think it will be the same this year. Still 3 trophies to play for.

Yeah, should have done - We were only in there a few mins to grab a swift pint of Stones before Ken Jnrs Univ mates headed back off to the Station and we headed off for some scran and a quick visit to the folks - got back home at 02:00 as it was so, next time, eh?

Isn't angry the wrong word to use? - I'm angry that 132 Pakistani school kids have ben murdered.

It is a disappointment that some of our league performances aren't up to the standard of last night, but we played our usual sit back, cup style and hit them with smart passing in midfield and broke up front with great speed and vision. Mcnulty was again, pure CLASS.

As some have eluded to on other posts - teams come to BDTBL and park the bus - we parked the bus last night at home in a one off game - you can't park the bus at home to league 1 opposition.

Your point has merit though in that the management needs to develop a style that suits the whole team and not just for one off games - as one off games are not going to get us promoted.

Some want jam tomorrow, when it is still fermenting in the jar - it is coming - hopefully the second half of the season will develop with a couple of decent signings in January.

I posted a few days ago that if we beat Southampton, then the club could go bonkers - the none playing club management should recognise that now and they should recognised that by giving FREE coach travel to QPR in the FA Cup 3rd round. Both Cups could be the catalyst for the league season really taking off - We need ALL the fans behind us as finishing top 2 is still not dead and buried by a long way.
