Tom Cannon....again.

'Not a Target Man'. A phrase has never described a player better.

The team and manager need to have a look at themselves. Lumping it to Cannon is on of, if not the least effective tactics I can remember us attempting.

Utterly lost, adrift, bereft of ideas against the lowest defense in the league. Not Tom's finest hour.

Although I totally agree with the first part of that as he definitely isn’t a target man, he is an over the shoulder into space type striker. However “not Tom’s finest hour” I am not sure what he can do other than try something if the tactic is to lump it at him. Every player has a specialism but it’s difficult when they can’t play to his strengths he should and could have had a field day if they did.

I don't 100% buy into the 'play to his strengths'' argument. I fully agree, he's an over the shoulder striker, and we should be making more of that, but I also think that the better players are able to actively make more of their strengths - Read the game and ensure that they're consistently in positions that means they're more likely to be able to play in a way that best suits them.

Maybe Cannon had been told 'under no circumstances can you come deep and receive the ball, you HAVE to stay long and stretch the game' maybe. It's certainly looks like there's instruction to bypass midfield and lump it forward. The trouble is, EVERY time, Cannon lost the strength battle, failed to leave the ground and the defender headed the ball.

He's not nasty or snide enough to play the front man. Sharp, while smaller in stature understood that position in a way TC can't even begin to dream about.

Apart from a hard shot what strengths does Cannon have? Slow and weak in every other department, a league one level player at best.

I think we all want him to do well but it's just not happening at all.

Through balls are what his "strength" is but we just lump it in the air to him most of the time.

We do need a striker in January to have any hopes of a successful season.

Even through balls he gets bullied off the ball.

I’d seriously ask Stoke if they want him.

I remember under Kevin Blackwell us lumping it up to the big powerhouse we had at the time that was Jamie Ward if Darius Henderson wasn't playing!

Irony (ish) was the best spell he had was when he was on loan to Preston, they managed to find him with confidence and the ability to score an array of goals. For whatever reason similar to Billy Sharp in his 2nd spell at a similar age (Billy scored 8 in 51, Tom is on 10 in 63 appearances) it’s not working, if he had all the attributes or even some more he wouldn’t be with us still. We have to appreciate the quality of the players we have, in the PL the vast majority of strikers would have scored the chance in the 1st half that BBD powered over the bar but as a group of players we are no where near that level.

One of my favourite goals was that Jamie Ward winner away at Southampton on a Tuesday night, they had just equalised in injury time and he went down the other end and got the winner.

Some people keep making excuses for Cannon saying we don't play to his strengths.

Well, let me tell you, at championship level he doesn't have any strengths.

He's not quick, can't win headers, can't hold a ball up, isn't a good finisher, Can't dribble.

I along with everyone else wants him to succeed but, the time has come to accept "he's just not good enough"

I have shared this video previously somewhere but these were the goals he scored whilst at Preston, a couple of tap ins (although one was a well timed header), he showed pace and strength and dribbling skills, it's strange why that has dropped, although he has shown the odd flair here and there.

Whilst we don't play to his strengths, those strengths are few and certainly not worth building around a player with such a lack of talent.

A complete dud.

Get rid.

We were noticeably less direct last night than we have been most of the season, presumably because it was Cannon and not Bamford or Ayew up top. That said, to the best of his ability he is now consistently challenging for headers and jumping well.

He just can't hold it up, which is a big problem.

He panicked at least a couple of times last night and smashed the ball high and wide. A bit more composure and he'd have at least hit the target .

Like Brewster, we all want him to come good but he's a square peg in a round hole at this club, he just doesn't suit our system (or lack of system as the case may be)

It is odd. The first goal there is something we barely see him do for us.

He looks so much quicker off the mark there and maintains distance between him and the defender before finishing well.

For us he's often caught on his heels making movements that aren't in sync with the rest of the team. Then if he does get in behind he takes a poor touch or the defender catches up and eases him off the ball.

If we can find a club willing to do a swap deal or even a swap plus a little cash from us we should definitely make it happen
