"Chris, we've found an exciting 21 year old left winger in Spain who we can afford in January. So far he's got 4 goals and 4 assists in 14 games. He's quick. He can get past a man. He's got a fantastic cross and he can cut inside to shoot and score."

"That's all well and good but will he abandon everything he knows and every footballing instinct he has to do what I tell him, and to play how I tell him to play."

"Why would you want him to do that Chris? Can't you change your tactics and style of play to accommodate him and play to his strengths."

"He'll never make it here as he won't understand the culture of the club."

"And what is the culture?"

"Do what I say. Play how I tell you to play whether it works or not, or fuck off."

"Should we sigh him then?"

"Is he willing to abandon everything he knows to play possession football and pass sideways and backwards before hoofing it?"

"Why would you want him to do that?"

"Because that's the culture of the club and he just wouldn't get it."

"So we're not going to sign him then?"

"No. I've heard Oli Norwood is available again for a low fee."
 
There are lots of things about the club that need to move forward , they're on most posts , we know what they are and there's general consensus.

Nevertheless the club needs to be identifiable to its supporters, the essence of what makes it , the DNA of sufc , I think thats what referred to as culture.

It matters as much as any ingredient, not more or less, its not either or , you can have both.

I have a nasty dry rash between a couple of toes on my right foot that has more of a culture than our club at the moment.
 
The underdog culture we had, having turned a league one club into a premier League outfit with a bunch of misfits and players and a manager who deeply cared about the club worked at the time. I'd argue that our success removed the ability for that culture to work, unless of course we become the underdog again. But then I doubt the fans will buy in and I wonder whether the players will too, considering we have a completely different type of player at the club now

Might be where FAB comes in - with it being a general consensus amongst fans - with questions to owners/Bettis/Wilder over tea and biscuits - but I don’t imagine it’s in the remit of their propaganda, erm, sorry… strategy.
 



Never thought I'd say this but I'm starting to regret that brief window of success during Wilder's first spell. We are nothing special, never have been never will be. Wilder and other senior people at the club seem to have sucked up the over blown press coverage around that time and still believe that we are.
Far from unearthing something unique and special in those few seasons we; lucked out on a tactic and worked a small squad harder than was sensible for too many years.
If you think the culture of the club should be anything other than aiming to be a; competitive, sustainable, innovative and successful entertainment business, you've no place there.

I could never regret those years! Going toe to toe with Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool etc and believing we could get something out of it.

It's almost surreal - I used to look forward to those games as I knew we'd give them a game and they actually respected us knowing they were in for a tough evening. Now I'm worried about Lincoln at home and Portsmouth away. How depressing!

What is the DNA of SUFC? Serious question.

We all love seeing a fellow Blade or homegrown player doing well and 2016-2020 with chairman, manager, and captain all being Blades was fantastic.

However, I often hear things like 'giving your all' 'getting stuck in' 'no fannying about' is what United is about. All the best teams have players who give 100%, are committed, aggressive, show passion, have huge drive and will to win etc. It's not something special to Sheffield United.

When I see this culture and DNA stuff it usually goes as far as having people in who 'get the club', know us, or are local, with extra points for either being a Blade or having represented us before.

To me the reality is that part of the problem is a notable proportion of the fanbase who are too focused on the baseless points above or have a natural distrust of people who they don't perceive or believe to be in that bracket.

The ceiling of this attitude is very low as we've seen over most of our lifetimes. If the club is to move forward with a more modern vision, then more of our fans need to embrace it too.

I absolutely guarantee that if Wilder left today and you did a poll of who fans wanted as next manager out of a young manager from Germany who has done well over there, someone like a Philippe Clement, Swansea's manager, even Scott Parker, or Billy Sharp. The amount that would want the latter would be ridiculous.

We feel safe with people like us who we know. Bit pathetic really in this day and age.

Surely every club, whether successful or not, has a culture. What successful clubs have is a dynamic culture that changes slowly but steadily from year to year and generation to generation.
Our culture seems to be appropriate to the last decade and not the current nor next one.

Not pathetic but understandable yet not helpful. It is a feeling that pervades most areas of our lives.
That is why change must come slowly and steadily so that the uncomfortable feeling for both fans and players is superseded by excitement and expectation.
