It's worth looking at what tends to happen to the club when we sack a manager and get someone new in. Generally do we tend to improve and start playing better?

Cooper would never come to us. He'd take one look at our squad, laugh and say no thanks. Same with Parker. This squad needs work and a rebuild and his forte has been managing parachute payment clubs who were already 80% complete when he took the job. He seems to like an "easy" job and would be put off by the challenge.

As for Hecky, yes as a director of football, no as manager. We can't keep living in the past and I don't give a toss if he "gets us." We can't move on and change if we only ever hire managers who "get us" as they will keep doing what we've always done. I liked him as person and we treated him badly. But his injuries record has followed him everywhere and it cost him his job at Preston. He did a good job for us but he was very much like Wilder in that he made subs after a team scored, which we all saw coming, instead of before to prevent it. He had a plan A and his plan B was keep doing plan A but make some subs. Even then his subs were often baffling. A very likeable man and very humble, but limited in his tactical nuance. Not for me as manager thanks.
Cooper now and agree with hecky .

We did with Kendall, Warnock and Hecky.

Then there were the disasters of Adams, Morgan, Selles and you could even say Wilder MK2 seeing as we got no better in the Prem when he came in.

It’s a gamble for sure, comes down to the quality of squad. We have some shite, but I can help but feel Wilder has them underperforming and I’m sure the players would prefer a better brand of football

In the summer I wanted Jack Wilshire. Went to Luton in mid table after back to back relegations and turned them around. Only just missed out on the play offs on the last day. He plays good attacking football and despite them not starting too well this season I still think he’ll do well and go on to bigger and better things.
The only thing right now with our situation is that someone like him doesn’t have the experience.

I imagine people were saying similar when we sacked about 25 other managers in my lifetime.

At a guess, about 80% of those sackings didn't result in any improvement. The only ones I can think of that worked are Porterfield for Peters, Bassett for McEwan, Warnock for Heath, Wilder for Adkins and Hecky for Slav. That's five successful managerial changes and at least 20 unsuccessful changes in my time watching United.

Kendall did quite well after replacing Bassett

Blackwell for Robson was definitely an improvement.

As was Wilson for Adams.

And Clough for Weir!

That's an unbelievably uninspiring list. And a lazy one.
Totally agree, it's not the way forward.

And I didn't take part in the poll because I can't bring myself to actually vote to stick with Wilder, even though that's what we should do now, for the rest of the season.

I doubt I'll be able to enjoy much of our insipid, slow, predictable, magnolia football, but with this squad there's no alternative but to keep on with the man who brought in these largely geriatic or injury-prone (or both) ex-players until we reach a natural break.

We need a proper, experienced Director of Football first. One who will make a decent appointment. Fans lists, like this one, just regurgitate the names of people who appear to be doing ok at the moment regardless of whether they're actually any good or will make a difference to the players we have.

Someone asked who Lincoln's manager is? I believe they have two. But surely the point here is that over the course of a few years they've developed themselves on the basis of an actual plan so that when the last manager left they could continue more or less in the same vein. And they recruit players to that plan. I'm not using them as a model (they appear to be the modern day variant of Bassett/Warnock) just an example that clubs which prepare, think ahead and use data intelligently have a better chance of succeeding.

We have lacked any of that and I'm sorry to say it's the price we have paid for allowing the manager to be totally dominant. His signings in this iteratiion are an object lesson in short-termism. Panic buys.

If he can get us to avoid relegation there might be a chance we can begin to nudge forwards again. We won't, but there's always hope.

PS Has Hecky got any votes? If so, feck me sideways.

As was Wilson for Adams.
Disagree. Wilson was a decent manager but Adams had a good track record and would arguably have done better than Wilson after relegation if we'd kept him on.

In our relegation season Adams inherited a poor team and was in the job for less than six months

Yes a few did okay without achieving promotion. Even Blackwell got us to a play off final.
I think the difference with Kendall though was that there were no transfer windows back then. He could turnover players quickly to get the players in to implement his style of football. I think it’s much harder these days to bring in a new manager with different ideas having to work with a squad drilled under the old regime. Slav for example. Had he been allowed to bring in what he wanted it could have been a different story

Adams would have done better than 3rd and a play off final?

Really?

We'd need a manager with experience of turning around a side with low confidence that's on the slide. A manager that has a proven track record of successful rebuilds with no money. A manager that can work as more than just a head coach but effectively run every department of the football club because that's what he will be needed to do. All while avoiding getting sucked into the bottom 3 under threat of a points deduction. Ideally the manager will have experience of finding a successful formation with a squad that has one winger and no attacking midfielders.

None of them meet the criteria
With these criteria in mind I think Sean Dyche is possibly the only one that suits, but even then he will struggle without decent wide men. Not to mention there is not a chance in hell he'd come. We'll probably be looking at someone like Nigel Clough

Not saying it's time to sack Wilder yet, and not suggesting an alternative.

But I am begging people to stop saying "no one will come to us." It's nonsense.

There's plenty of managers who wouldn't come to us but we don't want any of those anyway.

Selles was the right kind of appointment but they got the wrong man.

The fans getting their way is the LAST thing we want
When the imbecile stropped of they wanted some bloke I could not renember the name of
because of ONE good game at the Lane
WE COULD HAVE HAD EDDIE HOWE
Someone who has spotted developed and USED young talent
We would be in the European minor cups now than headed for the third division with the dregs of our golden crop of youth here

Then they wanted this imbecile back for the infinitely better Hecky
after about as many game we have had THIS season under the imbecile
His TRANSFERS were ALWAYS DISASTROUS
But now he is TOTALLY BRAIN DEAD TACTICALLY
AS COULD BE SEEN FOR MOST OF THAT FIRST SEASON
WORST DEFENCE EVER in the Prem
A WORLD WIDE LAUGHING STOCK
People WALKING OUT AFTER 15 MINUTES
in a GAME LOST BY WILDER
GAMES eg Bournemouth destroyed by sitting in our OWN BOX rather than winning games we should have
Familiar?

As for Steve Cooper
Whenever he is interviewed he seems to me as deluded as the imbecile yesterday
'we are on the right track'
He was playing with his ear
We were scratching our heads
or laughing out loud at the delusion

I did a list when we SHOULD have been looking with Warnock brought in to clear out shite like Tanganaga
IT WAS BETTER THAN THIS LIST
but typically I've lost it like almost everything else

PLUS it would NOT have brought in the expensive geriatric shite that Wilder has filled the club with this season

If we carry on drifting with wilder in charge other managers & players won't want to come here, get rid now and let a new guy and his staff get started on the rebuild, Challenor is unproven at this level (yes, I know CW wasn't) , Edwards hasn't pulled any trees up , Hecky for U21s ,but not manager, so I'd go Mckenna, Cooper & if someone at another club Mousinho

I don’t know why but I just can’t see Edwards working for us. Based on zero evidence or insight, just a hunch. Similarly Cooper.

Mousinho and maybe Cleverly could be the most interesting names mentioned so far.

He'd already achieved automatic promotion with Brighton and taken Leicester to the PL. His Port Vale side were second in the league when he took the Blades job. People look back at Adams as being one of our worst managers but his record was excellent before he joined us.

Hard to say what would have happened if we hadn't sacked him but before coming to us his record was just as good as Wilson's if not better.

Pointless post and poll. He isnt getting sacked. Also if you think we can 'buy' someone out of a contract at a club Ive got some magic beans to sell you. Compo for wilder, compo for an attached manager. Our skint Yanks dont have circa 5-10m to do this
