My dad admitted he wanted Greaves back in and the papers were saying the same.Bet we f it up again
Ramsey will do something stupid like not picking Greaves
I hadnt really noticed until recently that Greaves scored only one goal (v Argentina in 1962) in seven World Cup matches.
Thursday 28 July 1966 ,
It's 3rd Place Play-off Portugal 2 USSR 1 which sees Eusebio score his 9th goal of the tournament and Portugal grab 3rd place with a 89th minute winner, the game was poor casting doubt as to wether a3rd /4th place game was necessary although the Wembley attendance was 87696 ,, The England squad were at Wembley watching the match some should have met Ali and his manager Angelo Dundee earlier but they were 2hours late and the England players had to head off to training,Ali says he will be at Wembley for The Final,he is in England to fight Brian London the following week
Preparations now being made for The Final with 29 countries showing the game live with another 30 showing delayed coverage , TV screens will be at Old Trafford Cricket Ground for anyone attending The Roses clash between Lancashire & Yorkshire wanting to watch the game ,
Despite still no plans for a parade for England a reception will be held in Ashington for Bobby & Jack Charlton win or lose
Touts who have had a bad tournament even giving away Semi-Final tickets are hoping The Final will make them some money they are charging £20 for a £3 ticket with the hope of the price rising to £40 as rumours of alot of ticket less West German fans heading over

Good news for England is that Jimmy Greaves says he is 100% fit ( although he did say he was fit prior to the Quarter-Final that he was fit enough to play before admitting afterwards that he had no chance of playing) , If he is fit Ramsey has a he decision to put him straight back in or stick with the team that has got us through the knock-out section,,
Still rumblings between FIFA and The South Americans but with FIFA saying they are still reviewing their threat to ban Argentina from Mexico '70
Bad news for one of England's best ever players ( some say the best ever) Stanley Matthews involved in a car accident and is in hospital, his doctor saying he is in a poorly condition but will hopefully be well enough to sit up in bed to watch the match

Today's the day ,60 years ago today , if "things" go to plan I will be sitting down at 3pm to watch a re-run of the game ( in real time) , I recorded the programme Ch 4 put out a few weeks ago showing the entire game

We've only gone and WON IT ,,
Ramsey's big decision was Greaves or Hurst ,he went with Hurst in an unchanged team (Banks Cohen Wilson Stiles JCharlton Moore Ball Hunt RCharlton Hurst Peters ) with Hurst becoming the 1st player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup Final , Ramsey,s first game had been a defeat Vs France 2 years ago , only the 2 Bobby's (Moore & Charlton) played in both games ,
West Germany took the lead through Haller (12) , Hurst equalising 6 minutes later , it looked as though Peters had won the match putting England in front in 78 minutes only for Webber to take the game into extra-time when Bursts shot ( that clearly went over the line but by not as much as a frank Lampard shot in a later World Cup ) then clinching the game with the famous Ken Wolstenholme some people are on the pitch they think it's all over ,, it is now goal ,, the goals at both the end of normal and extra time exceedingly late , after the West German equaliser the ball didn't get out of the penalty area before the ref blew for full time and after Hurst made it 4-2 there wasn't even enough time to restart the match
The West German manager said his players didn't think the ball crossed the line but added he had no complaints about the result saying England deserved to win , Prime Minister Harold Wilson had flown back from the USA and was at the game ( NB England have only ever won the World Cup with a Labour government in power ) Wilson encouraged Ramsey to acknowledge the crowd outside England's reception telling Alf "it's only once in a lifetime you know" According to Stanley Rous who was sat next to The Queen , she got caught up in the excitement and kept asking " how much longer to go "
Dave Corbett and Pickles watched the match at home BUT were invited to the banquet at night ,,

Everyone was shocked when it was announced that Ramsey had chosen Hurst over Greaves - I recall a newspaper headline : -
'WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT ALF'
which was a nod to the Cilla Black song and Michael Caine film that was popular at the time.

1971-72 is the last one I am going to do.
There are other season threads
I was only 2 at the time, not sure how many matches my dad went to that season. I asked my Uncle Ronnie about it, he thinks my dad did go to the Lane regularly.
My first full season as a committed Blade although my dad didnt buy season tickets for us. He had never been a season ticket holder at that point. He often went to matches at the Lane but for some reasons he never thought it would be worth having a season ticket. During the summer I enjoyed watching the World Cup on tv, my first memory of watching Wimbledon, British Open Golf, the Commonwealth Games and Test cricket (England v Rest of the World) on tv was during that year!

Two days after being disappointed seeing Holland lose to West Germany in the 1974 World Cup final on tv, I was shocked to hear the news that Geoff Salmons had moved to Stoke for a record fee of £180,000. My dad was disappointed too but he explained that the reason we accepted Stoke's offer was because of our rising debt caused by the expenses on building the new stand. I remember thinking "what's the point of spending on a new stand if it meant that we would sell a key player?"
