The World Cup

I was more of an alcohol by any delivery method possible hedonist until the early 2010s. So it was only really the Brazil 2014 World Cup that I've had a serious go a Beer Hunting and Ticking.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the Brazil Craft Beer "scene". Firstly, hunting down microbreweries was a great way of getting off the tourist route and meeting some local geezers. Secondly, and more importantly, some absolute belter beers out there.

Can't believe that no-one has mentioned the 1974 World Cup in West Germany. I was only 14 at the time but I was mesmerised by the "total football" played by the Dutch team, particularly the fabulous Johann Cruyff. A lot of people say that that best team never to win the World Cup was Brazil in 1982 but in my opinion, it was Holland in 1974. Absolute class they were.

Hungary in 1954 must be worth a shout. They only lost one game in six tears, the world cup final, to a team they put eight past in the group stage. They also gave England two absolute bummings in that time.

Yes, Puskas played with an injury in the final. Hungary led 2-0 then the Germans scored three times. Near the end the Hungarians had "a good goal" disallowed by the English ref

86
82
90 for me but I generally enjoy them all, can’t think of one I have disliked or had little interest in

Though I’m likely to miss a lot of games so maybe this would be the first

Gift link above.

This is the first time during a run up to a World Cup where I have next to no enthusiasm. That might change once it starts, but I have my doubts. Normally a World Cup makes my summer.
Likewise. I can't raise much enthusiasm for this one. The first one I watched was 1966 and one snippet I remember was Dad spending the afternoon gardening and we had to go out and tell him we'd won.

As for the USA, no doubt we'll have to suffer Trump muscling in at every opportunity.

My first was 1982, and remember being mesmerised by the Brazil team. The kits, the exotic player names, and just the way that Brazilian team played the game.

My favourite World Cup has to be 1986 though. I know it's so hard to compare players from different eras, but for me Maradona is the greatest of all time.

1966 England winning the World Cup at Wembley, when Geoff Hurst had a reght shot and scored to make it 4-2. I can remember The Legendary,
Ken Wolsenhome commentary: People on the pitch they thinks its all over, then the goal it is now.
That's when I fell in love with football. I started to be a regular at Bramall Lane, my late Dad, Bless Him, gave me instructions to go and stand at the front.
I had the habit of standing in front of the railings, then a copper would whisper in my ear get down. I loved the Cricket pitch and Pavilion in the distance.

No one man has probably carried a team to a WC like him

Don’t care too much for England but I always enjoy the World Cup. The lesser games are great and a nice build up to the final stages.

Legend status hit SB! Thank you

Best footballer I have ever seen. Next comes Pele then fat Ronaldo with Messi and long neck Ronaldo cleaning theor boots 🤣
And imagine how good he could have been if he hadn't been single handedly keeping the cocaine market going in Colombia, and "wasting" his energy on about 50 prostitutes a day.

Since 1982, I have loved the world cup. It's brilliant, a world festival of football.

Obviously as you get older, as it becomes less exotic, more corporate, more corrupt, and more exploitative, the shine comes off a bit. The state of the exploitation in this yank one is off the scale.

That said, an opportunity arose for me to attend england v ghana in Boston and I'm going!

I'm as excited as the 8 year old boy in 1982 watching his 1st world cup on telly, actually attending an England match at a world cup is bucket list stuff for me.

The yanks know how to put on a show, and when you're there it all feels a lot less dangerous than it looks from the outside.

So I'm looking forward to it.

Wow, that sounds great hope you will have a great time.

I've said it before, at least where I am the US feels safer than where I lived in England.

82 was the first one I remember.

Wasn’t that the one where Harald Schumacher tried to decapitate Patrick Battiston?
My first too.

Robson scoring after 20 odd seconds, dodgy stuff with Kuwait and Germany/Austria, NI beating Spain, Keegan and Brooking coming on late in the second league phase, my love for Renat Dassaev starting, and Brazil putting bend on every single pass.

Don't get me wrong, I'm flying to montreal, then have to go over the land border crossing, to my friends house in maine. I'm nervous about that bit with some of the stories I'm reading. Got to make sure the hire car paperwork is right to cross the border etc, or potentially get detained indefinitely without due process... be rayt.

But I have a been a couple of times to usa now and like I say, it feels pretty safe and normal when you're there. I'm not brown though, which probably helps.

I wonder if Trump will turn up to the Iran games in Los Angeles or Seattle???
If he does will be be introduced to the teams before the match??
