No he wouldn't
What does Cannon offer? He matches Sharp when it comes to being a body on the pitch. Can he press? Nope, can he attack the ball? Nope. Can he do any basic requirement of a striker? Nope.

What could Billy offer? He’d also be a body on the pitch, could he actually offer an out using his strength? Yep. Could he do other basic requirements? Yep.

Not in the Championship any more.

All this and more, get him back, bring him on, Billy scores the winner in injury time, crowd ecstatic, we go home happy. Worth the money imo.

We’ve collectively lost the plot as a football club if we’ve got some fans seriously considering bringing in 40 year old Billy Sharp as a genuine option up front.

He’s scored 7 goals in 37 games in League One, and more than half of those goals came in the last two games.

For what it’s worth that’s only 2 more goals than Cannon’s total from this season- in the division above.

Add in both of their cup goals.

Cannon goes from 6 in 36 to 6 in 37.

Billy goes from 7 in 37 to 14 in 45.

I think he should come back and help the kids and/or strikers after one more season.

Drop to League Two and get the Millers back up or go somewhere and play alongside Didzy for a season.

Bloating the stats with cup games is a bit disingenuous. He scored 5 of those additional 7 goals in just 2 EFL Trophy games against League 2 teams, and one of the other cup games he scored in was also against a League 2 team.

Billy is, and always will be a legend here, but it’s ridiculous to suggest he could still do a job at the level we should be striving to be at.

The only capacity that he should be returning in is on off-field position when he decides to retire from playing.

Cannon is faster than Sharp in his prime. He doesn't read the game like Sharp but he is young and still learning. Personally I haven't given up on Cannon. It may not be working out for him right now but he definitely has some quality. His goal in our final game v Derby was class.

Maybe he could improve with Billy coaching him.

Being coached may be beneath Cannon.

Coaching only works when your intelligence goes further than “basic bodily functions needed to survive”. Blokes thick as mince.

That was (still is) Billy’s ultimate strength is his ability to read the game. He just knew where the ball was going to be and made it look simple on so many occasions. Cannon makes some good runs but doesn’t have the spatial awareness, although he can get into good positions he needs to improve.

Aye. Thats why I genuinely think he’d do a better job, Sharps never had pace, but he’s had spacial awareness and a knack of getting in the right place at the right time, and an instinctive knowledge of where the net is subject to where he is, you can’t teach those things, you either have it, or you don’t. (In my opinion of course)

But I remember a time early in his career when Billy didn't have spatial awareness and was constantly being caught offside, that is why he went out on loan & ultimately we sold him. He then built his career through playing with R&D Doncaster. Modern day players rarely get that opportunity cos big clubs spend big money on potential and players don't get time to develop their careers upwards through the ladder. that is not a criticism of anything or anyone just the reality.

How long does he need to improve, though?
He's been with us the best part of a year and a half... Would you say he's improved during that time?
If not, then we're either not coaching him, or he doesn't learn.

I don’t actually think Cannon has been too bad this season, but he’s been far from a great watch.

The problem for Cannon is that he’s a one trick pony. And I mean that in the nicest sense.

If he’s not scoring goals he’s not got a role to play. Yes he can press, but that’s a standard we expect of strikers.

In the past we’ve had McBurnie, Didsy, Madine etc and we have Bamford now. They were all able to link up play and even if they’re not scoring goals, they’re linking play, defending from the front and defending in our box. Sometimes I think we relied on them to do the other work rather than score goals, too much, but that’s another topic

Billy, Mousse and Cannon, they need to be bagging. They also need the ball into them where they want it. They need to make the runs to force the ball and have that aggression.

Watching the Vardy documentary on Netflix and you see some of his aggression. That’s the player that Cannon needs to be. He needs to watch how Mousse bullied Man U’s Phil Jones and ended his career that night. He needs to watch videos of Billy in his younger (pacier) days and watch how he’s played the last few years. Aggressive on the edge, anticipating, getting in front of defenders, holding them off, out muscling them. Being a bit mardy if he needs to.

Campbell has looked great at times when he’s been aggressive, Cannon can also watch him, see how he physically holds off players

I’ve heard from people inside the club that Cannon is a decent finisher in training and we’ve seen glimpses that he’s got the eye for goal but he needs to add to his game

He needs to play in a front two and he also needs games, a consistent run of 10,15 games, but he won’t get that without upping his game.

He needs more strength but like Billy, he needs to be strong and lean, not heavy and strong like Campbell or prime Mousse. His summer plan should be to work on his strength and conditioning, follow Billy’s plan from 2016-19 and get angry 😂
