CONFIRMED Harry Maguire - Signed for Hull City

I think the most likely scenario is that Hull were by some distance the highest bidders. Sufc held out for more, Hull told them to fuck off, and now we're facing either selling him to someone else for considerably less, hanging on to him and him going for nothing next summer or 500k in the JTW, or telling Hull that we'd accept their last offer.

Since Wednesday United may have revalued Maguire's value downwards, which wouldn't make the statement "The Premiership club have finally met United's valuation for the defender" a lie.

In any case it's us the media are making out to be chumps.

Indeed. Or "finally" means what finally happened on Wednesday.

Will be sad to see him leave. He's got the one limitation (pace), but he's generally done very well for us and I've loved his trademark forward runs on the ball. Great composure and technique for a centre half, very strong and brilliant in the air. It won't be easy to fully replace him.
He struggled when we play a high line and his lack of pace is exposed when the ball is played over the defence line. Maybe we will be more confident in pushing our defence to a higher line (assuming that Butler and McGahey are faster than Maguire)

The gravy thickens...looks to me like we've accepted the 2 million.."the last offer made"?
But who knows...it's a tangled web and the details won't be out for ages unless some kind soul helps us 'nosey-parkers!'

;)

Not seen anything that suggests this figure from official sources

Basic contract law is that an offer remains open until it is withdrawn. So if Hull said "£2m" and United said "no" and Hull then said "take it or leave it" without saying that the offer was withdrawn, United then could accept it days later.

Edit: of course, Hull could easily get out of the deal if they no longer want him by offering him stupidly low wages they know he will reject.

All in all as it stands no-one seems to know what to believe, it appears as though we're saying we've accepted an improved bid but Hull are stating they've not made any sort of improved offer since last week but been alerted to our U-Turn which makes the scenario of Harry sulking & Clough telling the board to go back to Hull & accept the offer from last week due to him not wanting an unsettled member in his squad more likely.

Whatever the situation is, Clough has brought in his own signings in McGahey & Butler at CB, whether they are of the same quality as Harry remains to be seen & is highly doubtful as at this moment in time Maguire is one of the best defenders in L1. McGahey has the potential to develop into a top class CB & Butler is proven at this level so we are not short in this area.

Personally I reckon Harry will be a massive loss & it will be a scenario where 'you don't know what you've got till it's gone' with a lot of fans who believe we won't miss him.

He's not agreed personal terms yet & it seems unclear as to whether Hull have actually agreed to now go ahead with the bid they originally offered last week but all angles point towards a Maguire departure.

I'm sure Clough will shed some light on the situation in his interview with Andy Giddings which is going on now according to his twitter feed so we'll wait & see...

I think you're right about the Hull statement and the chain of events with the bids. But why did we even release a statement this morning at all? I can't see what it accomplishes. If they thought it would mollify the fans, then they have misjudged the situation. I think fans would rather have seen the sale done with the minimum of fuss in a way that would allow us to move on with other targets. Now this bizarre affair will dominate the agenda and makes us look very silly indeed, and fans will be more pissed off than they were to begin with.

Indeed. Bit of a fuck up.

They could have just said "on consideration we have decided that Hull's offer meets our valulation and have permitted HM to speak to them".

Someone was trying to be too clever.

Does anybody think sufc accept transfer bids via their website? Whether it was last Wednesdays bid or a new improved one, Hull will have known our stance - changed or otherwise - well before we went public on it.

That points all evidence of game playing directly at their door. Not that such things ever stopped anyone writing their own versions of history though...

I think it went like this:

1. United ring up Hull today "ok, you win, we accept the offer from Wed"
2. Hull say "ooh, don't know about that we will need to speak to Brucie" (knowing they are now in the stronger position negotiation wise and hoping to knock United down)
3. United put something up on their website hoping to (a) look good with the fans amd (b) pressure Hull
4. Hull are peeved by what they perceive to be United putting out something misleading and put out their line
5. United realise they can't win the battle of the websites and say they have no further comment to make.

"The minimum of fuss" generally means bending over and accepting the first bid though. I think we've done well to drag it out so far and have used our financial clout to reject previous bids.
What we don't have though, is Premier League football. Yes, Harry may be on the bench but he won't be seeing it like that; any footballer would fancy themselves to break into any team they sign for, so in Harry's mind why couldn't he establish himself as Hull's CB? It was always a huge uphill struggle for us to keep him given we're in League 1 regardless of how much cash we have, anyone thinking otherwise is very naive and we've done well to string it out so long IMO.

Yep of course I didn't mean minimum of fuss in terms of not holding out for the right fee, just in terms of once we decide to sell (however that comes about), the whole thing gets handled quickly and we move on. This looks like a mess.

It seems very odd that Clough was quoted as saying in today's Star we won't be bullied by Hull and that “It might reach a stage when it becomes a worthwhile deal for us to do but we’ve not reached that stage yet". These comments were made after the "final" £2M bid made by Hull on Wednesday.

I've said all along that if Clough thinks an offer received for Maguire is worth accepting, that will be good enough for me.

The worst case scenario in all this is if Clough has set a valuation but somebody on the board has pressed the panic button and overruled him.

You only needed that last bit. And you could copy and paste it for most of our forrays into the market :(

Nigel Clough: "We've accepted the offer this morning. It's a different offer."

Andy Giddings just posted on twitter - NC on Maguire: " We've accepted the offer this morning. It's a different offer."

So what exactly does different mean?

Andy Giddings "boss NC told me that ideally they'd like to get 2 new defenders in. They will futher enquire about John Brayford this week."

It seems like the stumbling block was what we were getting up front. It's likely Hull have offered the same money but with the bulk of the money coming to us now

Either not the same, or the same but separate from the original.
