44 miles but often feels like 44,000 when i'm stuck behind somone doing 20 on the snake pass on my way to a game.

Grew up near Heeley City Farm, so 0.7 miles for me and could see the Kop from our attic window.

Now I'm 4,726 miles away and would take 3 days to drive home, going through Iraq on the way. Can still see a stadium from my window in Lusail.

15 miles if I use the A57 or a faster route is 16.2 miles via the M1 and Parkway

Closest to Lane I’ve lived was probably Kelvin

It’s a long time ago now, around the mid 60s, but I remember you had a choice (or maybe your parents wielded a fair bit of influence) of probably/maybe of 5 schools in order of preference - assuming you passed the 11+.
King Teds was invariably first followed by High Storrs or Abbeydale then, as I recall, Rowlinson might be fourth. Can’t remember if there was any other school after that.
I am assuming, depending on where you lived in the city, if you failed the 11+ you would go to Silverdale, which surely wasn’t the only school for those who at 11 didn’t pass the exams.
I am sure that the ‘grammar’ system was an essential part of social mobility, which has certainly slowed down massively over the past couple of generations. Not sure that branding children at 11 as failures for not passing a set of exams based in maths and English and, I think, a bit of general knowledge was an intelligent or the best way to proceed.
However, as I recall the ‘grammar’ system was doing a remarkable job at ‘levelling up’ for those fortunate to be in the system and who succeeded in taking advantage of it. So much so that the private schools was having serious problems and some falling by the wayside as they were no longer in a position to show that they any real justifiable advantages, which had so often been simply assumed over parts of the state system.
However, the comprehensive school system seemed a reasonable and sensible option to move to, at least in the attempt to stop children being branded as failures, but over time it looks as though it threw the baby out with the bathwater.

Third closest here. Interesting how many of you so-called fans decided to move away from the Lane when you got the chance. ;)

Think I’m the closest on thread so far at 0.2 miles. Have done door to seat in 10 mins

Used to live around the corner from the Sportsman on Denby Street and once almost missed a 3pm kickoff after oversleeping. Students eh!
