Looking at the scoreboard today we were 2-0 up after about 4 minutes 15 seconds - and that included the time celebrating the first goal - so:

What's the quickest we've ever gone 1-0 up?

What's the quickest we've ever gone 2-0 up?

What's the quickest we've ever gone 3-0 up?

etc.

Millwall away in our relegation season 1980/81 we won 4-1 but I seem to remember us racing into a 3 goal lead quite early on. We actually had a decent record at the old Den.

Fastest to 1-0: Ronnie Simpson scored after 8 seconds at Burnley in 1963-4. We won 2-1.

The following goals were both timed at 18 seconds:

Peter Withe v Barnsley, 1985-6 (impressive as Barnsley kicked off). we won 3-1.

Brian Deane at Oxford, 1997-8. We won 4-2.

Tony Philliskirk scored in 23 seconds at home to Rotherham on Boxing Day 1983 (won 3-0) and in 21 seconds v Portsmouth in the FA Cup 4th round in 1988 (lost 2-1: Dave Bassett’s first match in charge).

Fastest to 4-0: we were 4-0 up after 8 mins vs Newcastle on New Year’s day 1955. We won 6-2. I suspect this is also fastest to 3-0 up.

We were 2-0 up in the first 5 mins of a 3-0 win v Bristol City in November 1994. Kevin Gage scored from 25 yards to put us 2 up.

Crikey, had Newcastle's defenders been out on the beer on New Year's Eve 1954?

Just looking at the Premier league games yesterday. Out of 5 games Fulham, Newcastle, Man City and Bournemouth all scored goals before the 7th minute.

I wonder if there's a tactic by teams to hit the opposition early and not allow that 'settling down' period.

We showed yesterday we are capable of doing this but have to be aware that at the back we need to totally switched on to prevent it happening to us.

(I recall a game against Reading at the Lane 2006/07(?) when they scored almost straight from the kick off and I'm sure it seemed so well rehearsed that it was a Steve Coppell tactic at the time)

We were 3-0 up at Stoke in 1996 in about 15 minutes and Vonk the Conk got two (won 4-0, no stress on that occasion).

Carl Muggleton was in goal for them and I enjoyed tells my Stokie mates that he hadn’t been good enough to play in goal for us, we only ever played him up front, a reference to him coming on as a late sub at Reading the season before, his only ever appearance for us.

Was thinking this myself last night.

The football meta seems to be changing from ‘sound out the first 10 minutes, don’t commit too much forward’ to ‘push on early, catch them cold’ and it’s nice to see. In general it seemed to me there were more goals in the EFL and National League yesterday than I can remember for a long time.

I think Swansea also scored after about 11 seconds and ended two up, albeit WBA came back at them.

Some Premier League teams are now treating the kick off like a set piece, with routines they've worked on on the training ground

It's not quickest to nil but the 5-2 game against Burnley we scored 3 goals in 10 minutes in the second half. We also scored 4 goals in 19 minutes in the 6-2 win against Peterborough.

But that wasn't the question.... 😂
We also scored 3 in 5 mins at Colchester in 2014.

We were 2-0 down and scored in 83', 85' & 88' to win 3-2

United played in 'sections' under Hecky. Fast start, 'settle in' from about 15-40 minutes, go again before half time. Fast start to the second half then the rest was score dependant

Just like Bassett used to do in the late 80s early 90s

Good. I’m glad this stupid play it out from the back and take an age to build, whilst the opposition saunters into its defensive block, is losing popularity. Only the very best teams can do it effectively against a high press. The rest, too often, make themselves look foolish at it. Including us.

Set pieces in general seem to be treated a lot more seriously now at all levels, I guess we’re seeing the fruits of teams employing set piece coaches.

We realised quickly yesterday Leicester were leaving our midfielders unmarked on the edge of the box so switched to out-swinging corners knowing they’d head them out to us if we didn’t win the first contact, leading to two goals.

Arsenal at the masters at it, Rice and Saka must practice for hours to put in the corners they do and Arsenal score a good portion of their goals from it.

I heard in the comms on the Friday game that Oxford have scored 60% of their goals from set pieces this season.

Long throws are also being exploited now as a weapon to drop the ball under the bar. Nearly every team has one now, a big switch from Stoke being hated by the Prem elite for it.

Football is changing, most teams are going faster and more direct, even Man City with Haaland do it. Purists might not enjoy it but in my opinion it’s far more exciting to watch, and actually plays into United’s hands a bit. Any time we try and move away from a more direct style of play it doesn’t work (I don’t mean hoof, I mean moving the ball forward quickly at pace especially on the counter) so maybe it’s time we embrace the power of it.

The first 70 minutes of that game we were absolute bobbar. We’d been at Gillingham (won 1-0, Coady) the midweek before and we got there almost at half time because my dad’s car broke down near Chezzy. After 70 mins at Colchester I’d finally started questioning my sanity, then I think we brought on Chris Porter (for England) and he ran riot and I was right back in love with United again.

I remember looking into this at the time. That was the only time in our history we have come back from 2 down with 10 mins to go and won.

A game against Blackburn, 1970-71 season, 25 seconds, if my memory is correct.
A Woodwaed thunderbolt it was thunder and lightning, and pissing down with rain.
At Bramall Lane. We ended up winning five nowt.
I am sure Silent Blade will correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes Woody scored in the 1st minute

Our 3rd goal (Reece) was just before half time

When Campbell nearly made it 4-0 just before half time, I wondered when was the last time we scored four first half goals in an away match? Does anyone know?
Was it the 5-2 at Leicester in 1990?

My dad was at the match with Uncle mick 's dad but they got in the ground 10 minutes after the kick off. They thought the fans were taking the "mickey" when they asked for the score so they moved to another section and asked different fans for the score, the reply was still "4-0 to United"

As I have said many times Revolution Sr and his Dad were also late for this game. They ran down Shoreham Street and my Dad was quicker. It was 1-0 when he got in and 3-0 when his Dad got in.

We were 4-1 up at half time at Rochdale in 2012. Don’t think we’ve topped that since.

The way we pressed so aggressively straight from the kick-off yesterday was exactly the way we played in the first PL season under CW.

It was a brilliant tactic and great to watch and we put a lot of the big boys on the back foot.

It didnt always result in early goals but it was like a statement of intent and being complete unknowns at the time got us a bit of respect, our confidence flowed and we looked like the real deal.

At that time we were really solid defensively so if we did get ahead we could see it out.

We are improving game on game with our current backline which will take time and will get us up the league.

Hoping this will be our gameplan going forward.

Hawksworth scored the third in the 6th minute according to this link

Wendies scored after 3 minutes too. Couldn't believe how many early goals there were yesterday.

Bet they were half pleased we were 4 up and half gutted they'd missed four of our goals!

Summarising the story so far:

Fastest to 1-0 - 8 seconds
Burnley (A) 1963-64
Simpson

Fastest to 2-0 - 3 minutes, two games get a mention
(1) Blackburn (H) 1971
Woodward, Ford

(2) Newcastle United (H) New Year's Day :-) 1955
Ringstead, Hagan

Fastest to 3-0 - 6 minutes
Newcastle United (H) 1955
Ringstead, Hagan, Hawksworth

Fastest to 4-0 - 8 minutes
Newcastle United (H) 1955
Ringstead, Hagan, Hawksworth, Spencer

The fastest to 5-0, 6-0, all the way up to 10-0 are likely Port Vale (A) in 1892, with scorers lost in the mists of time(?).

Was that the game when we were well in truly in front that Ted missed a penalty at the kop end. Made no difference to the result or the points gained. The week before he scored a late, late penalty at QPR to give us a point. That point was very important.
