Mr Wigfield would be best heeding the following advice if he wants the smooth transition he currently implies will happen;

Is this really being spoken about or just bull.

Owners of virtually every football isn’t a fan of that club….they are normally expert businessmen looking to make profit.

Any businessman with a brain….will have thought about the idea of creating a giant football club….as big as a Leeds United or Newcastle.
In the mid 90’s our owner Mike McDonald (not the singer) tested the waters suggesting the idea of merger to form a super club.
American owners tend to think along the franchise line…..they would be excited about creating a club capable of 60 to 80,000 gates.
On paper it’s not a crazy idea….regards what action they’ve taken regards approaching SW is just scaremongering….its confidential…so no one knows.

However English are traditionalist….we don’t support a team for success or even entertainment.
In England football is more of a religion and we prefer authenticity, history and tradition instead of being offered a man made super team.

However altho the idea of a Sheffield team would fail in the short term……in the long term with special marketing it could work. Football fans are notoriously fickle….if a new Sheffield team was playing top PL football and there was no Sheff Utd then of course I’d go to watch live top class football.

If there was no Sheff Utd or Sheff Wed….then I’d go to the odd game at Rotherham, almost said Millmoor ha ha.

These type of polls are too vague.

On a simplistic level….cant see any fan wanting a merger or being happy with a merger…..at instant reaction is no one would go to watch a new merged team.

However we all know how incredibly fickle football fans are. Initially I’d have no interest in a merged team but if a new fancy 65K stadium was built in a good convenient location and pricing was initially cheap then I’d go out of curiosity.

Also put it this way if this merged team was playing Barcelona in a Champions league game then of course I’d be going….
and with careful marketing probably 60,000 other Sheffielders too.

I'm all for it, the new team will need a name, the two clubs have been brought together, united so to to speak, so it should be called Sheffield United.

Similarly, it would only be fair to combine the kits from each club, so we could use the red stripes from our kit, and the white stripes from theirs.

This is something that 20 years ago nobody would entertain..

However, being realistic, both Sheffield clubs have been left behind to the point that they will be also rans in football for the rest of time..

The only way to adress this in terms of actually trying to win something by attracting a "mega money owner" and building a club capable of competing at the top level in England and European football would be to merge and create one club, with a fanbase that would eventually top 60k supporters attending games regularly, over time with the newly gained success this is a realistic number.

Won't be popular, but we (both sheff teams) are winning nothing for the forseeable future unless half the premier league up sticks and break away, of course this cheapens the premier league and waters everything else down along the way, the top prizes in English football then would be even more distant to us in the new super league that would then exist, if that were to happen..

whilst this is my take on things, i dont want a merger in my lifetime, but can I speak for the future generations of Sheffield football fans? Would it be right to condemn them to watching a team scrapping up and down for thier lifetime because I want nothing to do with that lot in S6?

I can't see a time where this would be acceptable to any current supporter of either club, but our futures are mapped out, even if one of us got lucky and had a group of young players that were all world class coming through our accademies, who would be capable of winning the premier league, they would be bought up by the top 6 teams to strengthen thier futures before a ball was kicked in Sheffield..

It's probaly not for my generaton, but I'm in my mid 50's and seen us win fuck all, will most likely die having seen us win nothing of note..

No major trophy for 100 years, none for the next 100? would we even have a club if this was to continue....

COH might not be football experts, but clearly can see how they might future proof Sheffield football for the next generations of football fans.

Which makes the shite we signed after selling Anel & Souza in Summer even more more inexcusable.

The main reason I dont want a merger is that sometimes we can have a fairly shite season but a least hammer the pigs once or twice to cheer ourselves up a bit and collect some much needed points (Like this season). Losing that "silver lining" would be a tragedy.

In answer to the poll question posed. If it happened.. would I attend? No I think 30,000 of us would just set up another SHeffirld United club and have an experience "doing a Wimbledon" with a bigger fambase.
