Rob Staton - ā€œ Gus was on the bench last week, is it safe to say that he’ll be playing next Saturday?ā€
Massive smile from Chris and without wishing to give Charlton’s manager the full 11 it is pretty clear both Gus and Ty
Will be playing and more to the point ā€œ we need Gus at the top of the pitch not in the positions as a fan. I saw him playing in the last few games…… ā€œ players need to be playing in their right positionsā€ -
Hallelujah!!!!!
Welcome back, Chris!!!!!!
Playing from the left then presumably.

Think he basically gave the formation away for Saturday, sounds like same as last season & getting players back in familiar roles. I’d expect something like:

Cooper

Godfrey
Tanganga
McGuinness
Burrows

Peck
Matos

Ogbene
O’Hare
Hamer

Campbell

Bench: Cannon, Ings, Chong, Barry, Brooks, Soumare, Seriki, Mee, Davies

Makes sense initially to go back to basics & have some experience in the team. I also don’t mind the thought of Barry coming on after 60 minutes to run at a tired defence & Hamer moving central for O’Hare.

We need our bench to have more of an impact this season. Hopefully One/Brooks/Chong/Ings/Soumare/Seriki can be useful off the bench.

Godfrey? Seriously? Do you think he can play fullback and the performance against Ipswich was just a protest against Selles?

Listened to it.

Some probing questions from Stu at the end and Staton.

Owner Relationship

Very much on message. Thanked the owners for bringing him back. CW has spoken to them all including investors. They have sent him good luck messages.
CW declined to answer Staton's question whether they had apologised to him or admitted they'd got some things wrong. CW said they'd had frank and honest discussions. It showed what the owners were about with their decision making. Presumably he meant in bringing him back. Referenced Bettis for special thanks.
Owners were in a position they were not expecting and wanted to restore pride in the Club.
Said there was no fall out when he was removed previously. Whilst disappointed he accepted they wanted to go in a different direction.
CW has enjoyed conversations about collaboration. Got a good feel about the place.
Some smart signings have been made in the transfer window. Shows their ambition.

In answer to Staton's question if it was any other Club would CW have told the owners you've made your bed lie in it. CW replied probably. It was his club and he wanted to get it back to where it needed to be.

The players

They have been told they have to take some responsibility for the results so far.
Running stats are the fourth lowest in the division. That is not SUFC.
Believes players are a strong group. They need lifting up. Mentioned culture after 9 minutes.
Looking forward to building relationships with new players. Chong, Ogbene, Tanganga and Mee mentioned on at least 3 occasions. One hopes they are in his thinking for starting positions on Saturday.
Hamer needs to be played further forward in a 10 or out wide on the left. Players need to go back into their natural positions.
Doesn't feel there needs to be much done with the squad although there are 29 pros which are far too many. Some will have to go out.

The Captain

Asked if Hamer would keep the gig. Said Hamer was the best player at the Club but needed to get him back to playing how he was last year. May mean having to take it off him for now.

Structure changes

Stu asked if any had been discussed with the new owners to help CW manage upwards. CW answered he was here to help the club and would collaborate with the new owners. He didn't want to do everything. It would be something discussed at Senior management level. Sort of dodged the question.

Tactics and formation

CW got a dig in about those criticising his tactics last season. He emphasised how hard it was to win games in the Championship. Said they had been innovative in the past with overlapping full backs.

Wouldn't be drawn on formation. Have to be fluid and flexible. Then went through most of the team and options giving the impression he's going with a 4-2-3-1

Coming together

Asked about pro and anti CW factions. CW said he understood there would be differing opinions and those who didn't want him back. He asked everyone to come together on Saturday between 3 and 5 o'clock.

Overall one of his better pressers. Positive and upbeat and some good questions from Stu and Staton.

Thank you

One of the journalists seemed to know he was asked back Friday night. Wilder didn't mention confirm that but mentioned Bettis called him then helmy and Rosen then the other board members

He also mentioned the AI at one point and seemed to let it slip that James Bord is not only our scouting system AI guy but a investor in the club

I think he’s an experienced head & Wilder will want that & give him a chance in his system. I think a back 4 with Seriki & Burrows might be a bit too attacking and he’ll want to tighten things up a bit.

To judge an experienced player on one bad match where the whole team were poor is unfair. Let’s see who CW picks and then how good they are.

Godfrey wasnt any good the match before. Never attempted a tackle a block or closed down. He and gave his winger way too much room. Hes not a full back

Probably called him as soon as they saw the team sheet on Friday.

Looking forward to seeing his smile…..his face will be a right picture.

He’s left us twice now….in strange circumstances when no one expected it.

Daft as it sounds….it might have done him a big favour being sacked over the Summer.

It takes the pressure off and ensures Blades fans appreciate him more than we did before. Some of us complained about his continuous 1-0 wins but we’d all take that now.
Whilst there's positivity about the return now, equally not everything is erased about how last season ended. I am both glad, relieved and delighted that Wilder is back - whilst also thinking he set us up wrong at Wembley, should've picked JRS in the squad and certainly should've returned from the tunnel at the end.

Because he cares more, my perception is that he was equally hurting more. He needed to summer to simply feel as crap as the rest of us felt. It was there for the taking. He needed the summer to decide if he had the fire in his belly to go again. Selles' time has been disastrous, but it's given Wilder and extended period, to dust him sen off.
