The enigma that is Tom Davies

He has a thing for his injury prone recovery projects. As you say it might just be padding the players ego but he’s been the same in the past with the likes of Brewster etc…

He pushes himself, I know he does things outside of Sheffield Uniteds standard recovery to get himself fit in his own time.

That’s not a criticism and Sheffield United’s physios may be advising him to do it. However they may not.

Either way you have to feel for the bloke a bit. Recurring injuries in a proffesional footballer at best cause a serious amount of frustration and worst can cause a lot of mental health problems.

Matt Piper ended up taking an overdose because of his ACL problems. I know it feel like a first world problem but these people are driven to get back to playing football, their lost without it and sometimes let their over eagerness to get back get the better of them.

Excellent player on the rare occasion that he was actually fit, which simply wasn't often enough.

Begs the question of what he does or where he goes next because it appears his body just isn't up to the job based on what we've seen of him.

I would imagine he retires now?

He is surely only going to get pay as you play offers and seeing as he is never fit to play that’s no good to him.

Sad for him but unsure why we are announcing it now?! It was obviously going to happen but what's gained by not doing amongst the usual retained list/last week of the season

My guess: We have two home games left. Wilder will want to give him a run out in one of them (even if it's only for the last 5 minutes ) so he can get a proper send-off from the fans. It's not worked out because of his constant injury problems, but I really like him as a player. I for one will give him a good ovation on his last appearance for us.

Wonder if he was offered behind the scenes role but he thought he could carry on playing? Which obviously he cant

And I’m thinking youth set up not conditioning coach.

Really frustrating because as many have said, when he did string the odd couple of games together you could see his quality.
Seems to be really well respected in the squad as the response to his Sunderland goal last year showed (not sure I've ever seen us hoisting a player in the air like that after a winner). GLTTL but hopefully the wages can be used elsewhere - and if this helps us sign Phillips lets hope he doesn't take his spot in the physio room o_O

He seems a decent bloke and wish him all the best.

His goal last season against Sunderland was the one that got me dreaming of promotion...

Looking at Brewster, maybe he will be in a position to get an early place with another club, get fit and play a decent role with them. I hope to see him playing as he is good player when fit.
The same Rhian Brewster who's just had knee surgery and is out for the rest of the season?

Unless he's thinking about retiring I imagine he will get a chance somewhere.

But they will be very aware of his injuries. So contract offers won't be coming in from everywhere.
Depending on what he wants to do, MLS could be a good destination. Smaller leagues and less games, it might help him to play somewhere warmer too if that's an option.

Can't imagine he'll go abroad, he has his chopstick empire to worry about!

Seemingly nice guy and a tidy player, wish it had worked out for him and us. On the positive side, hopefully this - combined with Wilder's recent language around the importance of availability - signals that the club will be taking a more risk averse approach to players with a chequered injury history. For every David Mcgoldrick there are seemingly 5+ costly failures (see T. Davies, Brewster, K. Phillips, Shackleton, Ciaran Clark...)

Proper send off for doing what exactly ?

We’re not talking Basham , Norwood , Baldock or Montgomery here …

All the best to him and all that but I wouldn’t have much idea just what I would be sending off tbh

Why does he deserve an ovation? He's cost us a small fortune over his contract for very little return.
I suspect he'll just quietly disappear into the sunset.

Quality player, awful fitness and awful decision to give him a 3 year deal.

If he keeps having injury issues may he need to retire?
We had exactly the same problems with Brewster.....who incidentally hasn't featured for Derby in the last four games,
