We need to talk about Sydie Peck

I’ve relayed this story on here before but amate of mine sat next to him on the train when he moved up from London to Sheffield. Said he had a massive bag and it was taking up a seat in first class so he asked him to move it. Got talking to him and he told my mate that he’d be playing in the PL within a few years. Confident lad obviously, but I’m sure we can all knock that out of him soon can’t we Blades?!
There is a line between confidence and arrogance.

Peck's a victim of circumstance. He should have been back up to Arblaster or out on loan last year, but due to Arblaster's injury and the inability of Davies to keep fit, he was thrust into the first team ahead of his expected development. He performed better than expected, has raised fans' expectations and is now being criticized for inconsistencies in his performance levels. He's a young player who should be playing next to more experienced heads, but we're woefully short in central midfield due to negligent recruitment. He's not performing well at the moment, but the fact we're relying on him is not his fault.

Every letter of this is absolutely on the money. Let’s not forget that this is the very beginning of Pecks second ever professional season playing Mr’s football.

Last season, he was paired with Vini who was a 1 man wrecking machine holding the midfield on his own. He’s now playing with Hamer & Soumare - the latter hopefully being a suitable replacement for Souza. Realistically, we shouldn’t be relying on Peck to be in our starting 11, but here we are. He’s a talented boy, but he needs some experience round him. Something he doesn’t currently have.

I felt a lot of them looked unclear about what their role is in the side today.
I agree players got in good positions with the ball and stopped. That said how hard can it be to pass to lilac shirt better still have a shot please. Watching today how they can be called professionals anything but professional. No plan no desire no work ethic no idea onwards and upwards as ever UTB

Peck and Vini Souza had good chemistry in midfield. Probably because they're both extroverts. I believe they made each other better.

Peck and Soumare aren't there yet, but I'm hopeful they can have that same kind of partnership.

I’m not wanting to go on about under Wilder but many of those players were on the pitch last season and didn’t look clueless. I think the coaching isn’t working so change to what they can do before be gets himself the sack. I preferred the Bristol game to this one at least there was hope, today it looked hopeless.

Peck looked just like many others today, uninterested and not sure of the system. The one thing though was the distance between them on the pitch. Vini and Peck used to play at the side of each other, where today Peck appeared at times to be 10 yards in front of Soumare, was that by design/system or something else?

There's no doubt that he has shown some ability and he has potential.

However he never scores, very rarely creates chances and assists and gets overran in midfield as his positioning is poor due to lack of experience. He's certainly not a tough-tackling holding midfielder either.

I don't see any particular issues with his attitude on the pitch but Wilder did say last year that 'He thinks he should be playing for Real Madrid and England'. Ok that's tongue in cheek but perhaps he thinks he's already made it?

He needs a strong Souza-type player next to him and better players around him, and its not his fault that several of them have been sold/gone back.

However being ruthless in the cold light of day in my opinion he's presently not adding/contributing enough to merit selection for the first team though would be interested in what others think.
He’s a good young player, but needs good players around him…or his shortcomings around physicality are exposed. He’s league 1 at present …that’s just the top and bottom of it

Funny how Wilder hits the nail on the head isn’t it?

We're about 2 months removed from people on here saying he was worth £20m and an 'ITK' source claiming the big boys were interested. Now, he's shite and needs sending to League One.

Two games in and heads have already gone. Is this a record?

Peck has the higher ceiling of them but has spent his first full time season playing under a coach who didn't coach and is about to play his second without any kind of partner/support in centre mid.

If I were advising him, I'd be telling him to find a sporting programme that was going to help him maximise his potential as opposed to flog him until he drops

Peck doesn't have a higher ceiling than Arblaster

Yes he does. Much much higher. Based on physical dimensions alone, he's more suited to the PL.

What are you basing your judgment on? The fact that Arblaster is a Bladey McBlade?

We need to talk about the shit owners and shit coaching team instead of focusing on our young talent.
Owners, Selles and the players.

Three groups of people that are just as much to blame for the start of the season as each other.

Owners for not moving faster in the transfer market which has left us short.

Selles for some of his game management and decisions, which CW was also criticised for.

Players (some more than others) who aren't working their hardest or playing to their full potential, when we know (having watched them last season and before) that they can play better than they currently are doing.

It’s either that difficult second album…

…or..

He’s had his head turned and wants to go back to London

He’s 20 years old and was a massive part of our success last season

How old does he have to be to be scrutinized and how many goals and assists and match winning performances did he contribute last season?

Boro at home was his best performance for me, created a goal and played well in a good team performance.

Agreed but it was exactly the same last season. He was very poor today, it happens, but tiredness at this early stage can't be an excuse.
When can it be an excuse?

It doesn't have to be an excuse but it can be a factor at any time. The preparation of all the players just doesn't look right to me and its a worry so early in the season.

I'm not sure why we played so many first teamers in the cup when we also have young lads that didn't feature

Peck needs a rest, it’s really as straight forward as that.

The problem is our lack of squad depth, or at least depth of players that can string more than half a season together.

I think those praying for an Arblaster return will be in for a disappointment. Two major knee injuries at such at young age is a big concern and I wouldn’t be surprised to see an RND drop off.

I think more bollocks.
The only worry I have about Peck (as a footballer) as our best midfield player (our only fit one as Brooks is a more attacking midfielder than all rounder) is when he will be out the door for a very few quid.
The real problem is the imbecile in charge who sees him as the target for corners.
Amongst other insanity which is losing us games we should win like yesterday.
