Is he the youngest ever player to pay a league game for United?

Steve Hawes held the previous record and he was just over 17 as I recall. I don't think a 16 year old has ever previously made a league appearance.

Yes, he is.

KIn hell Darren , that's tentative ,try and get Satellite of Love in there :)

Just checked. Hawes was 17 years 47 days when he made his debut, so Reed does now have the record.

He also joins Mick Jones, Paul Smith and Bernard Shaw in the "United players more famous for other achievements" list.

Really looking forward to reading people's view on the youngsters that played today.

Their usual selves really :)

Tel had another strong performance too.

the lad is a talent ,so proud of the young lads tonight ,and as for harry he was majestic

They were fantastic. Dimaio in particular played centre midfield with
a relaxed confident ease that belied his years. Otis Khan you looked a proper player with a bit of pace and purpose. Both performed like they had every right to be out there - and so they did. No rushing, no panic, just composed, intelligent use of the football.Young Louis Reed, sixteen is he? Well done, young Blade! - had less time but again looked a talented proper footballer. It was a proud moment, late in the game, to see the three of them passing the ball around comfortably between the three of them like veterans. They should all be very proud of themselves. All in all it was exhilarating to be at BDTBL tonight. A great team effort orchestrated by an outstanding manager. Tens all round from Pinchy.

They all did very well in a tough game. Dimaio's passing got better and better as the game went on, and I was particularly impressed with Khan using his body intelligently to protect the ball. One of his runs down the flank even reminded me of Murphy the way he just knocked it and did the guy for pace!

Overall I'm immensely proud that our academy continues to produce a number of players who can transition to senior football, with some having the potential to make it at a higher level. And there is no better manager to nurture all this talent than Cloughie; it's a very exciting prospect to have the development of our academy lads into senior pros in the hands of Mr Clough.

Dimaio tired towards the end though. I think a few thousands of yards of running and strength training so he could kick it furthur under good old Blackie would have been ideal for him instead of faffing about doing all the nice stuff

Apparently, his mum says he can't play on Sunday as his nappy rash is giving him some gyp....

Forty bloody four? - my arse, it's forty sodding seven here.

Love Clough's philosophy of giving youngsters a chance, did the same at burton and derby. In a local derby yesterday it must be quite nerve racking for 16-18year olds but Clough obviously fills them with confidence. I wouldn't complain if connor dimaio turns into a hidden gem like Will Hughes was/is at Derby.

Hill (33)
Davies (32)
Reed (16)

Is that the youngest team we've ever fielded in a league game do you think?

Not quite. The average age of the team on the pitch at the end of the Swansea game in 2010-11 (thankfully Adams' final game in charge) was 20.80:

Long (17)
Kozluk (33)
Maguire (18)
Kennedy (17)
Lowton (21)
Doyle (29)
Harriott (18)
Williamson (28)
Quinn (25)
Philliskirk (20)

[Lowry (21) was sent off after 54 mins. Including him makes the average age 20.81 years]

NB the side that started that game against Swansea had an average age of 23.55 - Harriott came on for Montgomery (29), Philliskirk came on for Slew (18) and Kennedy came on for Mattock (20)

Matt 'over the' hill raising the average

i am always reluctant to praise youngsters too early as they are just starting out on a tough career. However, I had to write on here after the Stocksbridge pre-season friendly to say that in Reed and Khan we had 2 players who really did have a chance of making it. To see them perform so well in the first team was fantastic.

Connor Dimaio desrves special mention for his excellent debut. Technically as good as any player on the pitch.

just whilst i am in football expert mode, can I also mention that i wrote that Clough was not the man for the job. I have never been wronger.

We had a very young squad in the 1964/65 season (Birchenall, Woodward and Munks made their debuts. Some teenagers were regulars that season- older players like Pace, Simpson and Allchurch last played for us) and I will try to work out the lowest average age for a match from that season

The median average age in both the Swansea and Rotherham games was 21

The best I could find was Blades 3 (Fenoughty, Birchenall, Woodward) Man U 1 (Sadler) in April 1966

Hodgkinson (29)
Badger (20)
B.Shaw (20)
Barlow (19)
Matthewson (26)
B.Wagstaff (20)
Woodward (19)
T.Wagstaff (22)
Jones (20)
Birchenall (20)
Fenoughty (24)

average age is 21.81 which isnt a record but a remarkable achievement in beating a top club in the top division!

Yay !

And everyone had written the academy off after Pembo left !
Our Nige has proved that all the young uns have a future at Lane if they're good enough !
The futures bright..its Red and White .....

That well known phrase, missing foe so long from The Blade Manager's hand book has been re discovered

'If they're good enough, they are old enough'

The median average age of that team is 20 so I think it is a record
