If Selles answer to having one fit central midfielder is to play one central midfielder, then he's not quite the upgrade we thought he was....

Agreed ….Surely nobody thought he was an “upgrade”. He’s a gamble and has a sufficiently low profile and standing that COH can dictate how we recruit with no real push back…. as evidenced by his post match comments.

He was a cut above at this level. At full fitness, he'd have walked into every side in the division last season - potentially our only player I could say that about (Hamer the other contender).

Anel, similarly, was clearly a top-end Championship defender.

I'd love to see this side with Soumaré and Iroegbunam (linked) from Everton in it.

Selles needs help from the owners. I was impressed with a lot of what I saw, but he hasn't been given the tools for the job.

When I first saw we were linked to Ireogbunam, I wasn't sure why, we have Soumare and Blaster coming back at some point. I now think its essential. This system only works with a proper DM in it. I'd love to get a 2nd DM in, who knows if Soumare will be good enough, and even if he is, we need a back-up or else we'll have more days like today.

Disappointed Soumare didn't get on the pitch today we need him up to speed in this division ASAP - I think our season depends on it.

Out of the three of them (Peck, Hamer and O'Hare) thought O'Hare did well enough, and Peck was up and down in terms of performance, albeit in a position that doesn't suit him.

But deary me, Hamer let that game pass him by, if it wasn't for RND's performance, I would have said Hamer might have been our worst player today.

He might be our most talented player but surely that doesn't mean he's entitled to get a free pass after that performance.

I only saw the first half but hamer was the Premier league version of himself from what I saw

The stupid free kick set the tone and hes managed to come back after pre season looking even more unfit than ever

we're playing a 4:3:3. He has to defend in that formation.

I think 3-5-2 would suit better when Soumare is ready been the anchoring CM with either hamer, coh or peck either side of him seriki/brookes on one flank with burrows/ barry on the oposite side with cannon & Campbell up top. Defensively we need to bring in at least 2 CBs.

Think it transitions between 4-3-3 with a CDM when we don't have the ball (when O'Hare plays as a CM) and 4-3-3 with a CAM when we have the ball.

I know what you mean, but formations are not a great way of explaining a team's set up when they have the ball. Full backs are routinely further forward than the central midfielders for example.

When we get on the ball it gets very complicated, depending on player roles and match situations.

If you are going to be that shockingly open you surely need some pace to get back and cover.

Bindon looks slow
Rnd must be the slowest player in the league and
Robinson has never had any pace.

They aren’t close to the right players for that formation.

Souza is such a miss.

What were we thinking of? In the history of football no successful team has 11 ballers in it. Yes, it helps if they can all make a pass, but no team can function without the grafters, the destroyers, the spoilers, the combative midfielders who stop the opposition in their tracks before they can build up a head of steam. As much as everyone is dissing our powder puff defence, the massive gap in the centre of the park where the Colossus of Souza once stood was there for all to see.

I think yesterday’s style of play and tactics can work with better players. I get Selles has to adopt his style now and hope that the club gets him the targets he needs.

My worry is we need 4/5 in to make this work, high intensity will mean injuries as the season goes on and at the moment we can’t afford that

You could make an argument we need RB, 2x CBs, CDM, RW & Striker. No chance we’ll get all that but it’s not unrealistic to say it’s needed
