Slightly Concerned

Wow- you really have 'swallowed the pill'. I hope for all our sakes you are correct but I'm getting the distinct impression that the monies for a quality RB/ CB/ DM are not going to come forth. I really hope your huge faith is rewarded because right now the OP is correct to be concerned.
Pessimists who think of themselves as realists are exhausting. Are you aware fear and relief aren't the only emotions available to you?

If every club making a signing after August 1st is unprofessional by your standards then good luck finding one that does its business professionally.

Hi All,

First time poster from North Wales here.

Excited for the new season, however slightly concerned at the lack of business up to now in the transfer window.
I dont want to sound like many other posters within the forum, yet we can all see the gaping holes currently within the squad.
It frustrates me hearing Ruben (who, Im excited to see what he brings to us) saying that we're only targeting loans and free agents, yet Hecky's able to bid almost 4 million for Richard Kone, Charlton, who've been in the financial doldrums for years have (when Knibbs signs) the biggest net spend currently in the transfer window.

Barry and Bindon will be excellent additions, yet last season we had 6 loans that needed replacing, id rather have replaced those with 6 permanent signings.

Please forgive my ignorance on financial matters however, I'd have thought we would've been in a position to spend. Im sure Ruben would have liked to bring more players in than this by now...
Where in North Wales are you from?

Worth noting, if we signed no one permanently outside of the young lads, we would start next season with this squad (and these are from the official squad on the website):

GK: Cooper, Gbric, Faxon
FB: Burrows, McCallum, Seriki, Polendekov, Shackleton, RND
CB:
CM: Peck, Arblaster
AM: Hamer, O'Hare
Wingers: Brooks, Ukaki, Caceres
Forwards: Campbell, Cannon, One, Moore

So, although I want permanent signings we aren't in the worst place if there are none.

Obviously very light at CB to the point of madness.
A few years ago, we woefully neglected centre mid, rolling out Norwood and Fleck again, and again, and again... well past their sell by date.

Now, we're doing the same to CB. I want 2 X young centre halves, ready to start, but with potential resale value. Hughes for a starter.

An alternate take on our summer transfers SO FAR, is that we are thinking and planning beyond this season. I'm not a fan of lots of loan signings but I'm starting to understand why we might be going for them.

Arguably our best team to start the season is Cooper, Seriki, Ahmedhodzic, Bindon, Burrows, O'Hare, Peck, Hamer, Brooks, Campbell, Barry.

Our weakness is in squad depth if any of these players get injured/suspended. So we need to bring in decent back up as we're unlikely to replace any of the starting eleven other than Peck when Soumare arrives, as that will be very costly due to the quality that we already have. Perhaps a permanent centre back, we'll have to see.

Here's the rub.....

If we get promoted this season then next season we want to be signing some first team players who are BETTER than the eleven we already have, who can replace them and force some of the existing eleven players to the bench. That means the existing squad players end up leaving as a result. That's football. We get better and stand a better chance of staying up.

If we sign loan players as back up then if we get promoted this season they free up places for us to sign the permanent players needed to replace the existing ones, when they return to their parent clubs. If we sign permanent backup players then we're stuck with them, as we can't just release them and we may not be able to sell them next summer.

It's not all down to "we haven't got the money." The new owners have made it very clear in the few statements they have made that they want promotion and to stay up. They have said it may require patience. They have a long term plan to get us there. So far a lot of fans are far from being patient.

spending alot of money doesnt always work look at all the players who have left for nowt who cost millions i like free agents remmember one of the best platers weve ever had a kop legend didzy best free agent ever better than them who cost millions nuff said

Some so-called Bladefans are saying we are a disgrace, no chance of promotion.
You want to look at what's happening at the stadium of rust with that shithouse who owns them
That's a proper disgrace.

didzy class for nothing netter getting free agents on a permanent deal ,spending alot doesnt work has weve seen in the past waste of money aaaaarrrr ,, so get free lads in

It’s certainly becoming ‘the norm’ now that 2nd tier teams have to wait for the big boys to sort their business out before finalising deals.

Not ideal for the fans of ours who get pissy knickers if we’ve not signed 10 players by mid July and start questioning “weerz munneh?”.

Whilst I agree that they’re a disgrace and don’t particularly think we’re behaving differently to a lot of other clubs like us, I don’t think being better than them lot is any way to benchmark our performance as a club. Settling for just being better than the pigs will never get us anywhere.

Annoyingly everytime any fan tries to hold us to a decent standard - there will be some absolute bore saying "look at the pigs, be glad thats not us, stop complaining,".. like doing better than them is the sole benchmark and as long as we're better than the biggest shower of shit in British football then we can't complain.

Sometimes I wish the pigs were in the prem regularly and doing half decent just so the clapper bores wouldn't be able to trot this line out every single week and we'd have a bit of competitive fire in our bellies.

I've been watching since from exact same time, I wouldn't characterise myself with any of those derogatory terms but I really live in hope each year that prior to the season starting 'we get the business done early'

The one position that is absolutely essential we prioritise is CB. This was blindingly obvious the minute Souttar went down on Boxing Day- yet here we are thinking Jack Robinson is going to start once again 8 months later.

If that makes you laugh at me and think I'm stupid go ahead 'split your sides'.

I’m a grown up who likes laughing at other people and calling them stupid is an interesting flex…

That’s my concern. Not that we’re not spending money, or going crazy. But, can’t build a foundation on loans, it’s a fucking stupid idea that we’ve done many times before.
Yeah, but players the calibre of Barry and Bindon simply aren’t available to buy at the moment. Yes I would have been a lot happier if we had an option on them, but on the other hand it’s very much ringing endorsement of the players that their parent clubs aren’t willing to sell them…I guess we just have to enjoy them this season, let’s be honest, we’ve seen some fantastic loan players at the lane in recent years.

Loans are vital for teams to bring in quality they can’t afford however Barry was being sold to Hull for 4m before it fell through. We should have made the purchase in my eyes and opened up another loan slot for further quality

Yes, it’s that perennial race to the bottom, that infects Sheffield football like a cancer.
Even though we right royally fucked it up last season, a sizeable chunk of Blades fans will be deliriously happy, doing cartwheels about the plight of our enfeebled neighbours.
Doing the double over them this season, virtually means nothing now…except for collecting the points.

Weren’t Villa looking for a 50% sell on clause at that price?

I've never seen us give them a proper Boxing Day style humiliation, so that's basically what I'm Iiving for this season. If they get thrown out of the league before we play them I'm gonna be gutted.

Everyone saying be patient, we always do our business in August.

This is not a good thing. I think the last few seasons we have begun the season incredibly thin on the ground. Especially last time in the prem.

Really thought this would change under the new ownership… clearly not.

They were which maybe what put us off. I think I would have still done the deal though. Ideally looking to reduce the sell on abit. I don’t think we had any negotiations over a purchase and haven’t even bothered with an option which is a little strange

I wouldn’t panic just yet. Take Morgan Gibbs-White for example, arguably the best player we’ve had in the last 5 years, for one he was a loan and secondly he was signed after the season had started. I’m sure Selles will be well aware of the areas that need strengthening and I’m confident that we won’t be ending the window without having bolstered those areas.
Reasonable response to a new member rather than others slating him👍
