This is a fresh approach. We can’t just rely on signing 7 or 8 promising youngsters based on AI because some will miss

We also need guys who have played for Sellers before, if they also have good AI then fair enough

If we’ve got a very limited budget spec signings are probably our best bet, with genuine quality coming in on loan. I hope! But this is Sheffield United we’re talking about!

Im starting to feel nervous about the season now. If we are just looking at mediocre players from lower end of the championship and league 1 our promotion aspirations won't fair well. It only takes a couple of injuries and we'll have a fairly mid table team

Luton got up a few years back without a stellar squad, they had a set approach and got up using it

Even if we lost Hamer and peck and maybe Anel we still have a few very decent players in there as well

Leeds had a much bigger squad than us IMHO and far more quality after the sales. I’d imagine their wage bill was close to double ours.
Leeds sold their best players from the season before and had to replace them with much cheaper ones and loans

But when United are in a similar situation, it's a fire sale?

Thanks for stating the obvious! I think his post was contemplating selling Peck, Hamer and Anel, which is four key first teamers (Souza already gone).

Wasn’t contemplating as such, more a Deano and Fjortoft situation where they are sold off

Well it’s dissimilar in that Leeds had a much bigger wage bill to deal with and a far better squad with quality across the piste. We didn’t really tool up with quality to have a go at the Premier League, so less to sell. I don’t think you’re comparing apples with apples.

If we sell Souza, Anel, Hamer and Peck I think that leaves us with Cooper, Campbell and Arblaster with any quality at this level. That feels like the restructure and inevitable mid-table finish a season early IMHO.

So you're saying that unlike Leeds who replaced the players they lost, United wouldn't do that? You're also saying that Burrows, Seriki, Bindon, O'Hare, Brooks have "no quality at this level"

I think if you took the players out of this side we’re discussing, we’d be midtable. And I’ve no faith we have the cash to adequately replace them.

The whole model of every club that doesn't have an overwhelming financial advantage in the league they are in is sell high, replace low-mid but with players who can provide at worst a close facsimile of the player who left and you puck a manager you think can find a way to make the team stay at the same level.

There's no Championship clubs selling players and then replacing them with identical players at the same price

Of course I’m not suggesting we spend the same price, but we’ll need to spend a decent sum to get the quality in. If we make the sales that have been referred to we’ll be miles off, we both know that.

We need to give Selles the tools to get automatic promotion. No one wants playoffs amongst the fanbase and the squad will be picked clean next summer by clubs with parachute payments.

How can we possibly know we'll be miles off? This time last season, the assumption was mid table at best. There is zero information available to show how much money woukd be available in those circumstances

Well this is confusing me.

So much for AI and best in class recruitment. We only seem to be looking at players who have played for the manager and he's only managed two teams, neither team was very good
In which case that's not the AI! Not rocket science!
