As Bindon is right footed, I'd have thought bringing in a big, left footed CB would be preferable

I’m only basing my comment on seeing clips of him playing at Reading, where he was on the left hand side (similar to Anel when Souttar was here).

In the interview Selles mentioned another RB/RCB coming in so again, at a guess, I’ve assumed he sees Bindon on the left hand side
 
Does anyone else see correlations between Selles and Wilder in terms of training hard as they play, formation and team spirit? Not saying they're identical but I think Selles is a good fit for a team assembled by Wilder and Hecky.

I am impressed with Selles so far. He comes across as a likeable guy who the players will relate to also. This is all coming from a supporter who loved Wilder and wanted him to stay but we have to get behind Selles and there's a lot to be impressed with.

Not aimed just at you, but why are so many people obsessed/insistent it has to be a left footer at left centre back?? It doesn't. In fact many right footer centre backs prefer playing on the left.

Bigger squad yes stronger no, sorry but he’d struggle in Div 2. Personally I don’t agree with having huge squads and a load of shite on the periphery. Offload - accept he’s not worth having around. The AI punts are silly they are bagging the squad out with mediocrity.
 
I thought Tuesday night was a good watch and very entertaining, far removed from some of the shite served up last season, yes it was a friendly against weak opponents I'm fully aware of this, but I was pleased with the pressing, and the movement I think there was a lot of encouraging signs, and I'm more confident in the appointment than I was 3 weeks ago, I think if he can get 2 or 3 in and we can hold our own for the first 3-4 months of the season we can certainly look to kick on from December onwards

Squad depth is a factor in making a squad strong. We'd be paying to either make the squad thinner and more susceptible to injury, or paying to replace him with another cover CB/LB. Al this reduces the budget for transfers, meaning those we bring in are of lesser quality.

Not forgetting he was our MOTM in a championship play off semi and an international, produced by our academy and has had awful luck with injuries. He's not some random kid that's been given a few minutes due to injuries elsewhere. No manager has ever had a bad word to say about him at United or elsewhere, but you've decided he's such a toxic presence that we should pay to have him stay away from the club.

If results in the first 10 games aren’t great biggest problem will be fans negative reactions and toxic atmosphere. Last season we were storming it for half a season and still dipped at the end. Patience required. Personally I’m pretty excited by the new set up. I was dying a death by tedium last season

We weren't storming it in the first half of the season, we were as crap all season. We ground out results all season with workmanlike performances with very little quality. The only difference between the first half and second half is that our luck ran out in the second half.

This is why I stand by my words that even if Wilder had stayed we'd not match the 92 points again, as being honest, we didn't deserve the 92 points we got. We ground out way too many games rather than winning them convincingly and playing another season exactly that way again would have likely seen a drop in results.

This is why I don't have a problem with us finishing top six this season and missing out on automatic promotion, and I don't think the owners will sack Selles if we don't finish top two.

Not suggesting he's toxic whatsoever, no idea of his character, you believe he adds value to the squad, I believe he doesn't, a squad with 6-7 RND's is going only one place and that's not to the Prem. Ideally every position needs 2 quality players, he isn't good enough for second choice never mind first. Yes it's not his fault it's down to poor luck with injuries, but thats football.

If he's not toxic, how on earth are we better off without him for the same cost as having him? Another player to help in training, to cover for injuries, to allow players to rest in cup games. There is undoubtedly value in that, which you would chuck away for nowt.

We could probably loan him out somewhere and have another club pay some of his wages, paying him up is just bizarre.

Well first five minutes at Preston weren’t bad, although goal was disallowed

we ran out of souttar not luck if he had stayed fit all season we would have won the league imo we were able to grind out 1 - 0 wins because we rarely looked like conceding with souttar in the side

What makes you think the AI punts were signed as first team players for this season. I view them as draft players in the American sports system. We've signed them now but they might not make the step up for another season or two?

They're young enough to be put into the development team where they won't get a squad number and won't fill a squad place. Selles is playing them in pre-season the same way he's playing Marsh, Sasnauskas and Blacker, so that he can have a look at them and see where they're at compared to the senior players. Are Sasnauskas and Blacker a waste of a squad place as they're unlikely to make the bench this season, let alone start? Why the focus on just the AI players? They've only just gotten here.

If they don’t play for a season or two, they potentially block us from signing other players from smaller leagues worldwide as we only have four slots.

I wonder if we are going more of a Benie Traore route with them. As in bring them in, see if they are any good.

If they are, absolute result, we find a gem.

If they aren't up to scratch at our level, the Championship (or in future PL) shop window means we might still sell them for a profit.

Yes, if they have potential we might keep them in the academy but we aren't buying 18 year olds, they are early 20's.

True and the club will need to find a way around this. Many other clubs seem to have loads of overseas players in their academies but seem to get around this limit somehow.

I’d rather be signing a small number of players at £2-£5m who have a little more experience at a better standard, who could push on and then be sold for £15-£20m.

To me, the money spent on the Bulgarian lads would probably be better off picking up those players like Peck and Brooks who fall out of Cat 1 Academies, or putting aside to ultimately get our own Academy to Cat 1.

I appreciate you don’t need to follow one linear path, but we also must acknowledge what we have been outstanding at already and continue to excel there.

Maybe this is what we will move onto but it feels like the risk is far higher and cost of wages etc all will be higher. Not saying we are paying our new players minimum wage but I would guess they have jumped at the opportunity and half decent wages, where as maybe UK academy players will be more sought after and therefore we would have to offer a better package and opportunity than a range of other clubs.

We definitely need to be getting our Academy to Cat1.

Absolutely Tony,
Selles is the future, Wilder is the past.
Ruben will do what wilder could not do, play fast exciting football (as per my previous post) fans will be off their seat.
Fans will leave Bramall Lane on a high, not feeling mundane.
Happy, exciting times ahead.
Buy into it, embrace it, and most importantly, ENJOY IT !

In our previous three promotions, we didn’t have a player performing the Souza role.

It’s not needed at this level for us in my opinion. Appreciate others will disagree.

My rationale is this; we will dominate the ball against most teams. Having someone whose main purpose is purely to defend deep is a waste of a shirt and I’d rather have another player who can push us on.

In prior promotions we’ve had Norwood and Norwood/Doyle and before his injury we had Coutts. All of which were progressive passers who were happy to come deep rather than defensive foils.

I’m personally ok with three from Arblaster, Peck, Hamer and O’Hare and I’m happy Selles is already finding a system that pairs Hamer and O’Hare in a more Central Area. When Arblaster is fit it may be one of them drifts into a wider role of the front three but for now I’d go with Peck and those two when we kick off.

If we get promoted? Completely agree. It’s the one obvious change. But when we expect to be attacking we should embrace that. It also feels like if we were more like that last season we might have been more decisive in games.
