Were you coerced into taking on the debt?

What does it matter at what point the coercion happens? The "free market" depends on state coercion of people who don't abide by contracts. It follows that the free market is not "free of coercion".

Well look at Greece. A country that took on loads of debt, is defaulting on it, and is getting the shit kicked out of it by the markets as punishment.

I am not sure how that is relevant. Internationally, of course, there is no overriding state force, so if a nation defaults on debts, it's creditors can take what ever action they see fit and it's an issue of power.

Domestically, if I don't pay a debt I have incurred, the (reputable) creditor doesn't shrug his shoulders and just pass the word around that I am a bad credit risk or send the boys round with baseball bats ; he takes me to court to get his money and, if I still don't pay up, the state will take my goods and put me in prison to satisfy the debt and/or puinish me for contempt.

This coercion by the state rests on the moral value that "all legally incurred debts freely incurred must be paid". The state won't have truck with an argument that all moral values are subjective and that the state has no right to use force to enforce that value.

Historically there are, of course, lots of examples of exactly that. Check out the work of Avner Greif.

I will consider it after I have read The German Social Democrats in Opposition. Martov , Bernstein's My Life as an Exile and Viva Sabella.

The thing is though, when you get to that amount of money, it's not about what you could can do with it; it's a sign of status. So, for example, if Rooney is earning £200K a week and finds out Lampard is earning £250K a week, he will demand more than that as a signal of how great a player he is.

All completely stupid and irrational of course and if you can reach the attitude of "I am earning £xK a week. That is more money than I will ever need; who gives a flying fuck if some people earn more than me", then you have truly reached wisdom and maturity.

What! You mean many footballers don't ever reach that stage? Well, knock me down with a feather.:)

Fuck me - I thought this was a thread about one of our most exciting players, Stefan Scougall
Instead it's just another of a long line of threads that have been hijacked by Dazzler and Walthy to fling political guano at one other. I'm certain these two have a crush on each other ;)

Anyway, it's pretty clear to me that neither Foxy or Linz have the time or resources to clean up their shit!
So fellers, for the sake of all - can't you PM your PMT to one another on the QT?

I never undestand why this bother's people so much.

It's an internet message board, for God's sake. It's about as important and meaningul as the conversation down the pub after you have had 10 points. It's not like you bought a Bible off my publishing company only to find I had stapled in a copy of "Spanking Quarterly" after Exodus.

I bet you would do that as well ;) for a laugh.

Seriously - I like the pages you and Walthy put together. I do. I really really dooooo. x x x x x x

I think there are about 250 threads on here (if not) more where you can read about Sheffield United.

Seriously, is it that much trouble to see me and him are off on the political thing again and just let your eyes glide over our posts?

Alternatively, you could selflessly think after a couple of posts that this is not "General Blades Chat" and it's not about Stefan Scougall perhaps I could start a different thread about it elsewhere. Thereby saving everyone else the need to sort the odd grain of Bladey wheat from your political chaff? Or is that too much trouble?

It would also save Foxy and/or Linz the "trouble" of having to split the thread up for you at some point.

No more trouble than you putting the pair of us on 'ignore'.

Toodle pip.

Oh, don't be so sensitive - we're only taking the piss :D

Not sure why WalthamstowBlade has left you on yer todd to face all the music though - maybe he is getting down to some work instead.

But then we would miss some of the rapier like wit and repartee that so often comes from your collective fingers.

No - I think Southers has put it pretty well - we will have to continue to "sort the odd grain of Bladey wheat from your political chaff"

Just not possible to "ignore" either of you I'm afraid.

Actually, that's probably a fair point, sackcloth and ashes and all that.

I will tell him to take it outside, next time he starts....

Actually, there's usually someone who takes it in the political direction first. As I recall, oldblade started all this by talking about why Wayne Rooney needed so much money.

Blame him! He started it!!

Stop moaning then.

Indeed. Talking about football players wages and clubs pricing strategies doesn't seem that outlandish to me.
