Actually, there's usually someone who takes it in the political direction first. As I recall, oldblade started all this by talking about why Wayne Rooney needed so much money.

Blame him! He started it!!

False accusation!!! If you read my posts on this thread I have not mentioned Rooney at all (or anyone else for that matter). In fact I used the word "I" in my original reply. Perhaps you think I'm Wayne Rooney in disguise!:p

Ok, you started the general political/philosophical point as to why one would want £200K a week when one already had £100K a week.

What does that have to do with Scott Scougall!!!!!

Attention to detail please Darren. I was replying to a point made by Itsinyerblood, who was talking about Steven Gerrard!

If i was earning £100,000 a week, then i could easily find stuff to spend it on, and i could easily find stuff to spend £200k a week on as well.

Like they say, money doesn't buy you happiness but it sure does buy you a fuck of a lot more options.

If I was on even 25,000 a week I would be earning at a quicker rate than I could think up ways of spending it that actually brought me things that I wanted or needed.

I have a rather fertile imagination in dreaming up things I could make. Most of them languish by the wayside due to a lack of capital. It's not just material things i would spend my money on. I would create jobs as well.

Whether anyone would want a job digging pits for you to use as toilets is another matter. :)

Put yourself in Wayne Rooney's boots for a second. You being in the Manchester United team is going to generate £X million extra turnover for them (an amount which has rocketed as the ability for people all over the world to pay for Premiership football has spread) above what they would have if you weren't in the team. Why wouldn't you want to try and capture as much of that extra turnover, your added value, as possible? Or are you arguing for a greater share of income going to capital (the Glazers) rather than labour (Rooney)?

Abebooks is one of my favourite sites too.

There may be a level at which the amount of money someone gets actually reduces the incentive for that person to work hard/improve/perform etc.

If someone earns £200,000 a week, they are almost a millionaire in 5 weeks, and in one football season have received about £6.5 million. I would suggest that money would then cease to be any incentive to perform.

We were talking about footballers. How many of them do you suppose are quite so altruistic.

What's altruistic about creating jobs? I'd only create the job if I had a need for it.

The tone of the post led me to think that - "it's not just material things I would spend my money on. I would create jobs as well".

At which point their marginal productivity would fall and so would their renumeration.

No, you're oldblade, not oldgranniesblade.

And as they have no real desire or hunger to play football they would have little or no resale value and therefore be a dead loss to their clubs in particular and the footballing world in general.

Indeed, think of a Winston Boogarde (sp).

Yes, because I would need people to do the things that I didn't have the skill/inclination to do myself.

What non material things would you not have the inclination to do yourself that you would feel it necessary to pay someone else to do?

.

I don't think he would to be honest.

Clough was asked about him on RS last week sometime (could have been FH or before the match on Saturday, can't remember exactly) and he made it quite clear that he sees Diego coming through next year and not being extended this season due to the injury he suffered.
He might make some cameo off the bench appearances but, unless NC was spinning a yarn, I don't think he'll be starting him.

If Diego is being nursed alon,.I find it strange that he has been allowed to play for Italy, where he sustained serious injury. If he's fit enough to play international football,he should be fit enough to play for us.
