I still we are paying the consequences of being too hasty in letting Monty go last season.

He is the same age as Doyle, a better player and more of a team player than Doyle has ever been. I still we made a huge mistake in letting Monty go, and keeping the less capable Doyle.

I also think that had Monty still been here, he would have thrived under the Clough revolution.

Good point and I agree

Only benefit was wages?

Oooh Brownie, you'll not be a popular boy when Pep Pinch reads this. You're not allowed to praise Monty, he never passed to another United player and he never scored a goal for us either. In fact, it's his fault we're having all this rain too.

Four legs good, two legs better and all that.

We couldn't afford Monty, and the fact is he had a better offer (sun, sea and beautiful people).

10/10 for Pinchy baiting though. Watch out, here he comes…..

You can't blame Nicholas for going to Oz - who wouldn't with a good offer to play probably amongst lower quality players, and what a start for his kids. I'm pleased for the lad.

OK - a confession.

My views on the beautiful game are somewhat similar to Mr Pinch. That is a given.

But I also had more than an appreciation for what Nick Montgomery did for this club and what he offered the team on the pitch.

It really isn't that black and white.

He had a great game as a youngster at RB away at Port vale, possibly in 2000 (?). Odd spells where you thought he was on a par with Jags and Tonge but mostly, he was average and reached a point where you realised he was as good as he was ever going to get, an inconsistent below average footballer. One of his brightest "spells", was under Warnock, round about the time he fell out with one of the better players in the team Devlin. Instead of having Devlin tearing defences up down the right we suddenly had this head down burst of pace whose main intention was to get as far up the pitch as possible wwithout losing the ball and hopefully win us a throw in. That is my abiding memories of Monty being 'useful'.

Absolutely. He had to be played to his limitations and he was good as far as the wenty. It all fell apart when he was told he could the next Michael Brown.

Looking at the way the OP is written, I can only assume that it was posted after copious amounts of ale. Monty had plenty of chances to improve the team and to improve his game, he did neither, and the notion that he is better than the extremely limited Doyle is laughable.

I'm no fan of Doyle, but I saw enough in the time that Monty played for us to know that no matter who's revolution was happening at the Lane, Monty wouldn't have made it better.

a very limited footballer, used in a very limited way, offering an awful lot to the best team we've had in 3 decades. Those who can't give any credit are so tired of digging their hands are blistered.

I'm sure one day some of this new beautiful stuff will elevate us above Carlisle. :-(

Another one of those "anyone would be better" types, who it turns out hasn't really been improved upon as we've dropped deeper.

I never had any problem with wanting Monty, or any other player, replaced with a better player. We replaced him with Doyle. What a kick to the swingers that has been.

You could say that about every single one we have replaced though

It hasn't gotten worse though Foxy. Monty would have fitted in quite nicely at this level, wouldn't have added anything but he'd have run around a lot. We Don't need runners, we need a player who can pass and move. Sounds oh so simple but we've proved in the last ten years that players like this aren't that easy to find.

For all the people who knock players from the past.....remind us if we are in a higher league place?

:)

If only it were as simple as "they played for us in a higher league, they must be better."

In that case, bring back Jonathan Hunt, Ian Hamilton and Carl Asaba.

Our team would be even worse with Monty aimlessly running around through the middle of it, disrupting everyone around him.

Easy to pick players out.....I always thought it was a team game?

Hockey was nothing special on his own.....but christ he made a team!

Monty served the Blades with distinction for over 10 years including being a key player who helped fire us to the premiership, Doyle has been a key player in the worst side we have had for years

I find it difficult to think of how Monty made you team better in any way.
Without question Monty always gave 100% but part of the reason why we have been so dismal in recent years is because of players like Monty AND Doyle. Ok, so they can run all day and neither of them could play a pass of any meaning at ant time to another player in the same shirt. Monty's goal scoring was lamentable. Doyle's ability of the square or backwards pass is virtually all he offers. it is noticeable how much better Mcginn has been with Doyle. The emergence of Scougall shows what a proper central midfield player should be like - someone who can actually makes a difference.
But then again I can still remember the Blades fans who rated Geary above Bardsley. Effort and commitment is a 100% given at any level, but they must also be able to pass the ball a bit - Monty couldn't and neither can Doyle.

Doyle will be straight back in the side tommorow.

No he didn't. How did he distinguish himself, by running around a lot? He played a pass at Newcastle and he scored at Leeds and Crewe. Wow, in ten years that pretty much sums his positive contributions up. A silly thread and a silly subject to be discussing really, but if you actually do think that Monty could offer more than Doyle then I'd love a couple of pints of what you're on.

He was a trier but he was also fucking useless in my opinion. Sad to say about a career Blade but that's another debate...oh I forgot, they were queuing round the block to sign him but he hurt his toe ;)

I preferred his brother Chippy.
puppet liked what he saw of Jeff Minton after seeing him score a simple goal for Rotherham in 2001 (he was on loan from Port Vale) and ranted in BU or SUISA that we had missed out on signing him. I told him that he shouldnt judge on a player's qualities after just seeing him score a simple goal on tv. Rotherham didnt keep Minton so he went to Leyton Orient and then he went into non league obscurity in 2002. Monty was a key player in the triple assault season until he got injured in the semi final 2nd leg at Liverpool also played many games in the 2005-06 promotion season and in the 2006-07 season in the Premiership. This time puppet hasnt risen to the bait when I mentioned Jeff Minton in this thread!

Yeah, that was me amongst others.

Bardsley was oftentimes uncommitted and couldn't be bothered to do the basics. He was twice as talented as Geary, but if you can't be arsed it matters not one jot.

I'd take Bardsley over Geary a million times over in a world based on potentialities. But in a world of reality, only one of those two gave United good service.
