Rhians new two year deal

Whilst he’s had a bad injury record, he’s still made over 100 appearances. He’s not going to be desperate and sign any contract we put in front of him. He’ll definitely have interest from other clubs.

I’d be happy to keep him on a two year deal on club average wages.

I thought he was very good tonight. There are parts to his game which are pretty elite.
He has vision, and a great weight on his passes. He also has a fantastic strike, which we saw with his goal.

He worked very hard out of possession tonight too. A possible contender for MOTM (though Ahmedhodzic gets it for me).

He’s done okay this season, but would I give him another deal? No. There has to be better options out there to spend money on. Thanks for your service Rhian, thanks for the goal against them, and good luck, but not with us.

That the thing though, we won't need to spend on him, beyond a nominal wage IMO. He knows, that no matter where he plays next year, his injury record is going to shape his next contract. I suspect, that for what he'd expect/accept in wages, we'd be hard pressed to find someone else with as high a potential, who offers the package he does.

He needs to stay fit and any offer should reflect that, but he gets my vote for a new deal, at long as it's in the clubs favour.

There are a lot of things in the ‘For’ column when it comes to giving him a new deal:

No fee, knows the club/players/manager, playing infinitely better the last few weeks than any other time he’s been here, scored against them smelly bastards the other week, nice kid……

In the ‘against’ column:

Been shit or injured for almost 4 years, terrible value for money thus far, tonight is probably the first time he’s been more than 7/10 for us.

I’d let him go still, particularly if we end up in the PL.

Putting his injuries aside, do we really think his recent contribution would continue in the Premier League? He's essentially a luxury player in that role. I doubt Wilder would play the same way with 4 attacking players. And he can't play upfront on his own. So....
Absolutely this!

If we're in the PL next season having players like him, JLT, O'Hare are going to see us outgunned, out muscled...

This time we need to be ruthless. If you're not a 6ft 2+ athletic giant, then we don't need them ...

Let's actually learn the lessons we were harshly taught!

When we did so well first time up with Wilder (being fifth in the Prem in Feb), we pretty much played ten of the eleven players that got us up, demonstrating the need for genuine teamwork assisted by a clear understanding of the team structure and individuals playing styles. Buying in a whole new team, and hoping they gel is very high risk, and threatens the confidence level of the squad.

Therefore if we get promoted (jinx) I would not expect us to just bin the first team players that got us there. Instead it is more likely we try to bring in 6 or so prem quality players to improve the first team 11, with players like OHare, Moore, Brewster etc becoming squad players. We then get rid of deadwood, such as Norrington-Davies,

Brewster to seems to be maturing a little bit, looks to have lost a bit of that ‘babby fat’ he was carrying through the injuries.

He’s always been able to really a strike a ball and is growing nicely into this new role.

Maybe it’s just the first time he’s been anywhere near full fitness.

It’s a yes from me.

We've spent the time and money and he's starting to come good now. Would be bonkers to let him go.
He has a love for the club, and great mentality. I think these last two goals will give him a massive lift as well. Also last night some of his vision picking out nice accurate probing passes was excellent.
It's a Yes from me.

IF he can keep fit between now and end of season and IF he can find consistency in his game and IF he can bag a few then offer him a 12 month with a year option.

His passing is excellent.

He plays it forward , at pace and in front of the receiver. Great skill to have .

He is clearly finding his feet in a role that doesn’t require maximum speed which has been his downfall re injuries.

Being coached into this current role and improving his confidence and contribution is well worth persevering with . The lad at Newcastle , Jolinton? (Sorry if I’ve misspelled his name) has made a similar transition .

So - it’s a yes from me Ant

This thread is just typical. He doesn’t score = he’s crap. He scores = he’s brilliant.

First half of the season he was generally poor, looked league 1 standard.

Second half of the season he’s improved his levels and now you could even say he looks average Champiomship standard. He’s managed to score 3 goals but they’ve all been quite easy chances. He’s still not scored a difficult chance this season. Last nights chance was a good finish but it was central in front of goal, you would expect anyone decent to score from there.

His attitude is 1st class and like Sidie Peck, he’s likable and plays like he cares about Sheff Utd. Think this is massive because it builds a culture developing a special team spirit within the club.

Conclusion
I would offer him a contract but don’t think he’ll start hardly any matches in the PL. He’ll mainly be sub HOWEVER in the PL it’s 5 subs from 7…..so having a strong subs bench is really important and he’ll probably see some game time in virtually every match.

Also if and when we’re relegated….theres a chance if he continues his progress he could be an asset in 2 years time if we’re back in the Championship.

If we assume he’s on £35K to £40K per week, think we should offer £15K + bonuses, £20K tops. He’s a squad player so wouldn’t be too concerned if he stays or goes, however I like him, so would prefer him to stay but only at the right price.

I think the bigger picture is (if we go up) even on form the Premier league is way too much of a jump for him just like it is for alot of our other constant players. Unless obviously we are planning to be a yo-yo club.

Yes. Think he’s improving every game in that 10 position. He’s playing catch up, and I agree with Wilder on him having a bit of a shit time with us. I also love him as a person, you can tell he’s very well thought of. He’s in the first XI for me now.

Brewster must be buzzing right now. A great finish last night following on from the goal against the snort beasts, he'll be really up for the rest of the season. I think he'll get a 2 or 3 more goals.

Give him a 1 year extension if we go up, 2 year if we stay down. I've got a lovely warm, moist and excitable feeling that our new owners are going to invest heavily in some real talent if we are promoted - if that's the case then hal of this squad won't be here next season.

I agree with just about everything you said apart from the contract salary. I don't know what he's on, I hear he's one of our top earners, maybe he is, however I don't think it's realistic to expect him to sign a new contract on reduced wages. If we do get promoted, I assume every other players salary will go up, however I do think that a salary that is parity with our other high earners is not unreasonable for both parties.

If you consider how much we'd have to spend to replace him like for like, you're still talking £10m+ and he's already our player so it would be a bit like a free signing. Cannon cost us £10m and currently Rhian is a much better player than him.

He's an awful lot better on the ball than off it. He's decisive in his decision making when we are on a counter attack which is a great skill to have. He works hard.

He still lacks awareness off the ball. He's a step late to react to a situation and still needs to be told where to press, when to close down. He reminds me of Callum Robinson in this aspect.

Deserves so much credit for his contribution this season. I'm still not sure what I'd do about his deal if it was my decision.

Every body liked him even before the pig goal ,would be a great sub to have , if we make the prem , if not , i dont think we could afford him .

Players have appearance bonuses in their contracts. That's not a new thing and I don't know why people are claiming it doesn't happen.

Brewster has mad several match winning contributions and if he hadn't we would have been well outside the automatics somw people are blinkered and have a short memory.
A new deal can't be a reward for past achievements though. Unitedhave fallen down that way before. If he's paid as a squad/utility player then that's potential value. If he's your top earner, or near it then it's most likely a waste of resources
