If Wilder takes us up over the next year or so would he go down as the best manager in modern times?
I appreciate there’s a long way to go this season or even next. I also acknowledge that he’s had more funds to play with than any previous manager but I counter this with a whole squad rebuild which lots were predicting mid to lower table, we continue to either grind out a result or play the opposition off the park.
I for one was sceptical if he was the one for a rebuild but thankfully he’s proved me wrong in spades.
Thoughts?

Get us up again first.
Then we can look at where we are heading and his ability to build a team capable of competing.
Because without a fair few additions and a huge improvement in control and creativity the likelihood is we get mullered every week, and spend most the game defending deep and hoping to sneak the odd goal.

But competition is slim, depending how we define modern times? In my lifetime at United…he’s possibly getting there.

Get us up and keep us there with competitive side and we can consider it done.

Don't think it's a stretch to say he's the best to do it since Bassett. I suspect for some however, he'd need to beat the 20/21 run and keep us in the PL for 3 consecutive season, to be considered a success.
I’ve been watching since Harry became manager and personally think he’s the only one to come close, others could have gone on to greatness but left us, as I said i didn’t think he had it to rebuild us into the team we see today absolutely incredible job, turning around Vini to be playing like he is when we all wanted him gone, maybe he needs to stay in the premier league for a couple of seasons to completely rubber stamp it, problem being the divide is so large now unless we spend £150-200 million on the right players I just can’t see us surviving even if Pep was in charge but hopefully we get to find out

I mostly agree, it’s the staying up that’s the biggest issue, will take huge amounts and players willing to come with the possibility of getting dry bummed week in week out, hopefully the new owners are willing to go out on a limb to try and achieve this goal, we can only hope ( have to say whilst we all love to get there, I always find the journey better than the destination)

You have to factor in that staying in the prem is much more difficult now than in past era’s

💯 it’s almost impossible to make the step up now as witnessed in the past 2 seasons and beyond

Well put it this way.

Taking a club from bottom on league 1 to challenging for a Champions league spot in 4 years is one of the most impressive feats in English football.
I’ve supported us for 50 years and that 4 year spell under Wilder is the best and most proud time I’ve had supporting United
Because we were going away to Arsenal and Spurs and outplaying them with pass and move football.
Opposition fans were scratching their heads looking at our individual players and wondering how we could be so good.
The general conclusion from opposition fans was they had their worse performance in years…..when playing us.

He’s also literally performed a miracle…..anyone remember the home night game against Man Utd…..think we ended up drawing
But that 1st half was like watching prime time Real Madrid…..we tore Man Utd apart in that 1st half….with lower standard individual players.

What he’s done is pretty remarkable.
Even this season….having a total clear out, so many changes but still challenging sat top of the league.

Harris kept us there 5 seasons.
Bassett kept us there 4 seasons.
Wilder managed 1.5 , then had a meltdown and walked out in the second
To get ahead of those 2 in my lifetime , Wilder needs to keep us there longer.

That's the new owners' objective.
On the evidence of his decisions & performances over the last 7 days, they would need a better manager to achieve it.

Wilder might scrape us out of the Championship by 1-0 , and he'd get his nice £bonus for that.
I love his love for the club I love.
But the negative way his mind works with selections & setup would not keep us there more than one abject season.
Yet again.
And the big £ he would waste in the summer is frightening.
Leaving only just enough for his payoff.

Hopefully we get to find out, maybe now he’s got a different group behind him they’ll identify better players than under Hecky

I still probably prefer the other 2 eras

Bassett was my childhood so amazing memories. Warnock was late teens, early twenties. Drinking, away games, completely invested.

Wilder has achieved more, but I'm a washed-up Dad of 2 young kuds now. Barely drink, list touch with alot of people I used to go to games with. It just doesn't mean as much.

He clearly already is, with or without another promotion. He took us from 11th in League 1 to 9th in the Premier League, and he did it in an era of oligarchs or entire countries bankrolling other teams. It was much easier to compete in previous eras.

Agree it’s not even a Sheff Utd thing.

His achievement taking a club from bottom of league 1 to challenging for a champions league spot (at the moment Covid closed down the league)
would be in the running as one of the best in English football.

Cambridge United are currently bottom of league 1…..imagine that club being in 6th position in the Premier league in 4 years time.
Surely it’s impossible and would need a miracle…..that’s what Wilder did with us…..a miracle.

To be honest Wilder may end up getting a stature put up….if he does the business next season in the PL and continues it,
The Scunthorpe home match (last game of the season under Adkins) is the lowest I’ve ever felt supporting United.
Even lower than when we were relegated to the 4th division. It’s because the penny finally dropped….i realised we could become a Bradford City
or Notts County, a big city club that spends decades in the lower divisions.

It was a 5th failed promotion campaign in league 1 and I’d basically given up……finally accepting we’d never get out of league 1.
So if I ever met Wilder….i’d shake his hand…buy him a drink and thank him for taking away the dark cloud over United.

He Is already the best ever manager. Hecky got promoted copying the exact formation with the same team and style. You can count it as 2 and half promotions.

If he gets us promoted again I think he will have a statue one day him and Billy.

I’m hoping you’re right on all points made

Hopefully you’ll get your kids interested and the cycle starts again, some of my best days is going with my kids, my son loves it he’s 23 now and even though we don’t live near each other he still messages me all through the games and I love it as much as when I was well enough to go regularly home and away 👊

I agree with both of your posts and I think people forget where we were and what he's achieved, and I might add he hardly spent anything until we actually reached the Premier League.

It was also the way he (and Knill and the coaching staff) transformed some of the players they inherited. The most obvious one was Basham. People might forget that for the preceding two seasons he was a nothing player, a midfielder who made little impact on games or a defender that couldn't really defend very well. He didn't actually start many games at the beginning of the first season under Wilder, but he made the RCB role his own to the point that it's now referred to as the 'Basham role'.

Paul Coutts was derided by United fans as a player that appeared to be not trying very hard. He was actually on the transfer list at first but fair play to Wilder for playing him and certainly got the best out of him. Ditto for Kieran Freeman.

Half of the shout box wanted him sacked at 3:45pm yesterday.
I can imagine and that’s a problem for all managers but especially Wilder, as he has very little credit in the bank (no pun intended) with his critics here, after his departure in 2021.

If we don’t get promoted, the vitriol from his opponents will be intense and how would the owners react?

Equally, should we lose against Leeds and QPR, once again all the amazing work achieved thus far, will be forgotten.

Back on point, I still regard Bassett as the greatest manager in my lifetime. Maybe, I’m overly sentimental but I just found his football exciting and some of his players will never be forgotten.
