Wilder best ever?

If Chris Wilder takes us back up this season, then yes, without a shadow of a doubt he is our best manager in modern times.

That view isn't just emotions based, it's factual - no other manager has taken us up into the Premier League twice, and no-one has ever managed to get us back at the first time of asking.

The size of the rebuild in the Summer should never, ever be underestimated - many good, solid, dependable managers would have crumbled to pieces under the pressure of rebuilding a capable side with a takeover happening in the background - Wilder stood up, puffed his chest out and got it done.

Just look at Luton, no reason on Earth why that couldn't have been, and perhaps should have been us - other than the man himself.

Again, he’s had nothing to contend with compared to what Harris (who also got us up twice) and Bassett had to contend with, but I suppose it depends how you’re defining “the modern era”.

Maybe you’re right but why does Hecky go above Wilder present day if he dosent have the skills set of illy for example to call on just for context?

I’d say it’s level pegging personally. Both did a job in tough circumstances but neither will have done it playing a brand of football that’s largely worth watching.

Saying that Hecky also had a cup run. Those wins against Spurs and Blackburn were better than the highs of this season

Whilst I have voted Yes here….the reality is that with US owners they will expect us to establish ourselves in the Premier League asap. They are not here for a yo yo existence. I honestly think if we go up we will see massive investment in the squad. And make no mistake - if we are struggling - I don’t think they will hesitate to make a change quickly.

So yes - in regard to Wilder’s ability to build a squad from scratch - he is fantastic. Whether he can make the next step that our new owners will expect remains to be seen.

He Is already the best ever manager. Hecky got promoted copying the exact formation with the same team and style. You can count it as 2 and half promotions.

If he gets us promoted again I think he will have a statue one day him and Billy.

I think the Chris Wilder of 2019-2020 season, has every right to be considered for that accolade. Sadly the 2025 version is not in the same class, he pales in comparison, devoid of any humility, often short on tactical nous and slow to implement changes.

FFS Yeah, he was a great manager for United too, wasn’t there long before going back to Everton though, so I’m going to mark him down for misplaced loyalty, probably have put him above Porterfield otherwise.

Spackman was decent too, but sadly he wasn’t there long enough to qualify for such a prestigious nomination.

People seem to have forgotten where we were when Mr Wilder took over, stuck in the Third Div. and going nowhere fast.
With a manager who had a thing about Wild Geese ?
The only saving grace being that for a while the wendy's where down there with us, but that's another story.
When the then owner brought in a HRH no less, and a new manager,
Mr Wilder, Thank GOD .

If we're only talking about years spent in the top flight then it's Harris, Bassett, Wilder then Warnock.

But there are other metrics. Porterfield took us up from the 4th tier to the 2nd, and was sacked before he could take us any further. Warnock took us up to the PL then straight back down by the thinnest of margins, but he also took us into play off finals, cup semi finals etc and attendances increased by (wild guess) 35-40%.

Hecky is nowhere near Wilder in terms of achievement! I appreciate circumstances were difficult coming into his PL campaign with us but fuck me if was terrible and I couldn't believe it when he tried to justify losing 8 nil, so he definitely loses marks there.

Wilder is the best manager in my lifetime. Despite the fact that I'm getting a bit fed up with some of our performances, looking at his tenure as a whole (taking us from the dark days of Pub League Losers to 9th place in prem, along with overseeing a long and desperately needed squad overhaul this season) he's done a pretty fucking marvelous job.

Nobody is perfect but despite his shortcomings, I will always be so grateful to the bloke for what he's done for my Blades.

Got to say as well that Harris had pitiful amounts to spend on the team yet in the early 70's we had a team as good as any but a bit like early this season no back up if anyone was injured. At the time United played at a three sided ground, if you went to the lane you more than likely stood on the terraces I think John st only had at most about 6000 seats to bring in more cash even when the BLUT was built that only brought us an extra 3000 seats. Compare that to the pig sty at the time which boasted 24,000 seats little wonder they always said we were the poor relations even though most of their stands were gifts from the FA for a World cup/ semi final venue, pigs had friends high up in the FA.
Probably one of the things that made the pigs deluded and start off this "massive" notion. Still with crowds pretty much the same the pigs gate receipts would be double ours we had to build the South stand to survive we were just unlucky that after we started the build the economy collapsed and the 40,000 crowds we were enjoying in 71-72 disappeared and interest rates shot up meaning the club was broke having to pay for it.
