Really good summary. We also seem unabled to miss the midfield out and put it straight into a forwards feet.Hamza and Vini plays the idea is that it should allow the full backs to push on in possession. Those two covering as they move up.
The issue we have is that we are trying to adapt to a possession based system, play out from the back and through the thirds. However, the two CB aren’t suited at this for me.
Neither is great on the ball and both are prone to errors, Robbo particularly struggles when closed down and put under pressure, while they also take too long to get it under and pass it. Passing wise it’s also inconsistent, and pass completion stats don’t cover the whole picture as a pass that’s under hit/over hit or onto a team mates wrong foot, bounced into their knees etc still shows as completed when in reality it’s a poor pass that’s slowed down the move.
So these two CBs drop deeper to give themselves more time, increasing the distance between them and midfield or as is usually the case dragging the midfield back with them…which in turn either isolates the forward or drags them back too.
slow passes from the pair is easy to press by opponents, and if they then push up onto Vini/Hamza their passing isn’t good enough to break it so they make the easy pass to the full back and eventually back to the keeper.
For this system to work you have to be able to play through the press and the 2 CB set the tone for that.
Holding surely improves it, the levels he’s played say he has to be better on the ball.
Won’t go into the rest of the issues of these 2, but defensively there are many….Souttar playing in this group we are levels above where we have been last few games
Teams have done this against us recently where the CF the lays it off to an oncoming midfield and the press is broke.
