A VERY concerning and frankly baffling quote from Wilder.

Pompey didn’t just ‘run around more’ they completely controlled the game, exploited our weakness stopping & defending crosses and should’ve scored 4/5 easily. Meanwhile we persisted with tapping it across defence, back to Cooper & launching it forward.

Last 2 performances have been very concerning in all honesty & we’ve only got away with it because we played two lesser teams. This weird 4-4-2 does not work whatsoever and playing our best attacking players out of position is weirdly stubborn from Wilder. We’ve changed from the formation that got us to 2nd after finally getting a natural LW in - why?

Hamer plays 10 or so minutes in his natural position second half and turns the game in our favour. We have the best player in the division - stop wasting him out wide.

Play our best attackers in their natural positions & let them do what they do best:

JRS - Hamer - BBD
Cannon or Campbell

Then we have either Cannon or Campbell to come on along with Moore, Brewster, O’Hare, Brooks.

It seems blindingly obvious & this weird experiment needs to stop on Wednesday.

I just wrote this in another thread.

Worst tactical set up of the season for me.

We were absolutely dreadful today. Yeah everyone says the sign of a good team is to win ugly but we’ve been doing it for 3 months now.

I’m not a negative blade, been looking forward to the game all week thinking this weekend was the first time in ages we’ve had multiple options in every position. I was hoping we’d win convincingly and put on a bit of a performance. A win is a win though.

Listened to Wilder in the car on the way home and have to say I wholeheartedly disagree with him when it said it was nothing to do with the tactics. We’ve largely played a 4231 formation all season. We’ve chanced players all window with that system in mind so why, when we’ve got a fairly fully fit squad did he decide to change it today.

At times we looked like we were in a 424 formation and one of the two often found himself between the two centre backs. Never seen so much space afforded an opposition midfield. As we had two holding midfielders sat in front of a deep defence we then had a 30 yard gap to 4 players stood in a line ahead of them. We had to go pretty direct or it was side to side across the back line. When we went direct it was more often than not coming straight back into the chasm of space in midfield where there was a distinct lack of bodies.

He then swaps us to the 4231 we’ve spent most of the season playing, we then have a 15/20 minute spell where we actually looked the better team for a short while, We get ourselves in front and at that point we looked like we might go on and get a 3rd/4th while the momentum was with us so what does he do… stick us into a back 5 at home against a bottom 6 side. Just seemed really strange to change to a 3rd formation in the game straight after our only good spell in the whole game.

For me it was the worst starting formation and tactics all season. Just didn’t work at all. Hopefully lesson learned for the Boro game as a big improvement is required if we want anything out of that.

I wonder what the ever faultless messiah was expecting to see from a Souza - Choudhury midfield partnership.....

Guess that's just not tactical enough though

When we signed Choudhury I said it appears we have signed a Souza replacement when Souza is still here.. we however neglected to sign an Arblaster replacement when he’s out for the season…

Don’t get it.

Let’s get to the top of the league with a formation that works. Yes we need some experience to come in and support us ….. Wilder….. rip that up and throw people all over the place. Absolutely one of the worst tactical pieces of management ever. He’s done great to get us here but for him to say tonight tactics were nothing to do with it is beyond arrogant !

I actually thought with the issues Clarke was having at right back it would have made sense to move Hamza there.

But all you supporters that criticise Wilder you need to : -

(a) look at the league table and

(b). remember he took us to 9th in the Premier league.

Apparently that will make today's performance all the more acceptable.

On paper we have a great team and a strong bench now but we look tactically bereft and clueless going forwards. When we play the ball out from the back we are static and have no runners.

By contrast I saw Pompey get upfield in 3 moves.

We did finally get the bit between our teeth though and the subs definitely helped.

Playing a traditional 4-4-2 isn't so easy anymore, as your 2 CM's have to be able to do a bit of everything as you lack a number 10 who will do the attacking work of a 4-2-3-1.

The only other way to do 4-4-2 with 2 CM's is for 1 to do more attacking work and the other to do more defensive work, which we aren't seeing with Souza-Choudhury.

4-4-2 would work if we had Arblaster-Souza, Arblaster-Choudhury, Souza-Peck, rather than Souza-Choudhury like we saw today.

Souza and Choudhury are good defensive minded midfielders but they need to play in a system with a traditional number 10 in front of them, like O'Hare or Hamer.

When CW first came to the lane he said I want people watching the game not their phones,I want to play exciting attacking football and get people off their backsides, well Chris 12 passes across the back line back to cooper out to defender, pass to midfielder who then switches it to the defender on the other side to repet the whole thing again, is NOT EXCITING, you set the team up,you train the team so it's on You,sort it out ffs or I'm sure the yanks will move you on regardless of which leauge we are in

Feel better now

There's a few things. We are building a squad and team on the fly and have been all season. To be doing that in February (at best mid January) and to be sat where we are despite that is an incredible achievement. This is rarely mentioned by critics. BBD doesn't look fit, certain players are (hopefully gelling) and the likes of JRS, Peck, Souza and Choudhury understandably have questionable fitness.

The key is to keep winning and to hopefully integrate the new lads whilst getting injured players back and up to speed . We don't have the luxury of being justified in criticising performances.

its either souza or choudray imo both of em looked totally baffled today taking each others space has to be one of them plus davies and hamer as the midfield 3

I said the same. I was told Vini would do the Blaster role. However, neither of them did the Blaster role.

CW seemed to want to put all his new signings in the team at once, regardless of natural position. Obviously that had nothing to do with him. 🤔😉

Didn’t Hamer score by cutting in from the left wing ?

He did but I’d argue you play Hamer anywhere across the midfield he’ll do something - he’s a fantastic player.

But do you honestly think we’re getting the best out of him in that position? What about BBD out on the right, O’Hare on the left last week?

They’re good players & can still do something positive, doesn’t mean we’re playing to their strengths & getting the most out of them.
